Greetings!
In celebration of Black History Month, Dunwoody Elementary has embraced the national theme by focusing on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. As a part of our celebration, Ambassador Andrew Young will speak to the student body on February 19, and four time Olympic medalist, Angelo Taylor, will speak on February 24. We are also honored to host the step team from Columbia Elementary School, Boys to Bow Ties, during our program. Everyone is looking forward to these exciting events!
Please make sure you employ safe habits during the morning carpool hours. - Refrain from using your cellphone while in the carpool lane
- Students must walk with adults (hold hands in the parking lot)
- Make sure to have the driver's attention before attempting to walk across the carpool lane with your child
- Remember that we prefer for you to stay in your cars until the drop off points! Walking in the parking lot with so much moving traffic is dangerous!
I hope that everyone has had an enjoyable four day weekend! Our next student holiday is Friday, March 11 followed by Spring Break, April 1 - 10. Remember that our Spring Break begins on Friday this year unless we have a weather make-up day.

From the PTO Co-Presidents
While folks are always working diligently on PTO activities behind the scenes, this week, we would like to take a moment to spotlight the school store!
The school store is open on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:10-7:40am, in the cafeteria. The efforts are headed by Dana Coulter and Kim Yarberry, and the store is staffed by parent volunteers! From the store, students can purchase pencils, scented erasers, pens, markers, notebooks, and other popular trinkets. Children can utilize their budgeting, saving, and money skills, and proceeds go to the PTO to help fund projects around the school. Stop by and check it out sometime! Remember, there is no school on Monday.

Inspirational Allies
No Place for Hate Regional Contest
Every year the Anti-defamation League Southeast Region has a No Place for HateŽ student contest where they ask students to think about ways they can build a world without hate. The theme this year is Inspirational Allies. An ally is defined as someone who speaks out on behalf of someone else or takes actions that are supportive of someone else. Being a part of No Place for Hate school, means we are asking students to make the transition from being bystanders or aggressors, to being allies.
On the DES Counseling Website, you will find the contest flyer, as well as the entry form and rules: http://dunwoodyescounseling.weebly.com/counselors-corner-blog/inspirational-allies-contest1. Students can be creative through artistic expression like: original written essays, poetry, short stories or art/media including videos, drawings etc. Let your children know there are prizes for the winners and they will be recognized at an awards ceremony on April 17, 2016. Submissions should be sent through the mail by parent or guardian. The postmark deadline for all entries is March 11, 2016!
