ANNOUNCEMENTS

From the PTO Co-Presidents

Thanks to your contributions to the Tiger Fund, five kindergarten and first grade teachers attended Orton Gillingham training last week to learn innovative ways to educate children about phonemic awareness!

Thanks to Courtney Lamb and her efforts in the organic gardens!  Our second graders sampled sweet potatoes planted last spring and donated what was left to help feed those in need through Malachi's Storehouse!

And...the numbers are in from the Scholastic Book Fair! You purchased over $15,000 which will result in a cash contribution to the school!

Thanks,
Morning Traffic Procedure
Parents,

A primary concern at Dunwoody Elementary is the safety and well-being of all students. With this in mind, we have particularly focused our attention on morning bus arrival and carpool. We have worked with DeKalb County Schools Transportation Department and the Dunwoody Police Department to make changes to our existing procedure so that student safety is maximized. On Friday, November 6, we will begin to enforce the new plan with the assistance of Dunwoody Police.

You will receive repeated notifications of our new process through email, newsletters, and TIP for the next two weeks. Please pay close attention to all procedures.

Changes to our morning procedure include the following:
  1. Only buses and employees my use the smaller lot entrance until 7:15am each morning.
  2. Vehicle traffic may not ever pass a loading or unloading bus no matter the location on the school campus.
  3. Students may only be unloaded from vehicles in the drop-off zone on each side of the awning (along the curb where there is staff or patrol assistance).
  4. Vehicles must move as far down the drop-off zone as possible before unloading.
  5. Parents walking students into the building must be parked in a designated parking spot unless otherwise directed by a staff member.
  6. Vehicles must stay in line and not pass other cars throughout the entire drop-off to exit process.  The traffic flow map is shown below.
  7. Drivers using the smaller lot for drop-off must be willing to turn right onto Womack - no left turn allowed.
  8. Drivers must remain in the car when using the drop-off zone.  If a child requires extra assistance to unload, the driver must park in a parking space to assist.
  9. Drivers must refrain from using cell phones while driving on school property.
  10. Pedestrian traffic must utilize the crosswalks to cross the carpool line.

Eco Sneakers

Girls on the Run continues to collect sneakers and rubber bottom shoes for the Eco Sneakers program. The collection bin is located near the cafeteria.
New Faces at DES

Dunwoody Elementary welcomes two new faces to the front office!  Ms. Anne Marie Watson is our new clerk, and Ms. Jessica Brown is our new nurse.

From Our School Council

There is an overcrowding issue in the Dunwoody cluster and the Dunwoody Elementary School Council is working with the DeKalb County School District to advocate for solutions that benefit all of the schools in our community.

The local media has addressed this matter recently, specifically with regard to the rebuilding of a new elementary school that was approved with SPLOST IV funding. Our school council has shared with the district the need for transparency in the decision making process and has called for a resolution that makes more seats available for students, not the same or less. Our council will continue to advocate for our community. If you have input to share, correspondence may be sent to:

Please arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria (6:45 - 7:15am)
Program will begin in the media center at 7:20.
This month's topic is "Being Thankful"

"All Pro Dad is a simple idea with a profound impact. It's a one-
hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their
children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria.
During this time, we will discuss a wide range of family topics,
spend time together, create fun memories, and leave equipped
with resources to strengthen your relationship with your child."

The program is fun and free! All you need to do is attend, and if you want to purchase breakfast, you may do so in the cafeteria by using your child's "My School Bucks" account, cash or check ($1.65 adults, $1.20 children). If you do not have a "My School Bucks" account, please register for one at www.myschoolbucks.com
 before the meeting.

To help with keeping the parking lot and carpool drop off running smoothly, please park at GA Perimeter College and walk over to school.
