ANNOUNCEMENTS

From Our Principal

Greetings!
I hope that you have noticed our beautiful campus!  Thank you to all the parents, students, and teachers who joined us on Grounds Day to help make DES shine!  We always have a good time enjoying the community fellowship, and the weather was particularly gorgeous!

Thank you for your patience as we get our typing program started for grades 3-5.  We have had some unexpected glitches with purchasing and then with our set-up.  We are currently working with our district IT department to resolve the technical issues and should be ready to begin within the next few weeks.  If your child has already started typing, it's because the teacher took the long route to solve the problem for his/her students - and that's okay!

Our Aquaponics program is already up and going!  Currently the fish pond is quite green with algae, which provides students with their first problem to solve.  Is algae beneficial?  How do you control it?  What design do we use to solve the problem?  Our second task will be to design a greenhouse to protect the plants and fish during the winter.  In the next few weeks, we will conduct an application process to select five students to design and build our structure.

Now that our nature trail is cleared and cleaned, our teachers will begin taking classes out for lessons that correspond with their curriculum.  Grade level teachers worked throughout the summer to create lesson plans that utilize the trail and help students explore our natural resources.  Ultimately, we want to teach students to be respectful of the environment and become good stewards of our resources.

I hope to see families at our Family Night on Thursday, October 1.  Georgia Perimeter College will host their STEM Night program in our gym which was such a huge hit last year.  You will also have a chance to tour the classroom with your child.  Students are so very proud to show parents how they spend their days.  I look forward to seeing everyone!

Thank you,

Jennifer Sanders
Principal, Dunwoody Elementary
From the PTO Co-Presidents

This is a busy week at DES. We start off the week with the Book Fair and end with our Fall Family Night/GPC Science Math Expo.

The Book Fair is open for children and parents from Tuesday through Thursday. Read the article below for times and more information.

Our Fall Family Night is Thursday night. You will be able to visit your child's classroom to see what they have been working on and get a chance to talk to the teacher in an informal setting. GPC students will be here to show off some great science experiments and math games with the students. For those of you that pre-ordered your dinner from Uncle Maddio's, you can pick it up from 6-7 pm in the cafeteria. You are welcome to stay and enjoy your dinner. For more information regarding hours and volunteer opportunities, please see below.

Individual pictures are Wednesday, September 30. Please remember to send in your order form or online receipt with your child if you plan on ordering pictures. If you decide not to pre-order your pictures, you can always do it at a later date but there will be shipping cost that will apply to your online order.

We have lots of exciting things happening at DES, so don't forget to ask your children what they did at school and check the PTO website (http://DunwoodyPTO.com) for upcoming events and online registration!

We look forward to seeing you at school!

 DES Counseling Department

Small group counseling, which involves a number of students working on shared tasks and developing supportive relationships in a group setting, is a positive and effective way of providing direct service to students with academic, career and social/emotional developmental issues and situational concerns. By allowing individuals to develop insights into themselves and others, group counseling makes it possible for more students to achieve healthier personal adjustment, cope with the stress of a rapidly changing and complex environment and learn to communicate and cooperate with others.

Sessions will take place once a week for 30 minutes and parents will be updated weekly via email. If you believe your child would benefit from participating in one of these groups, please consult with their teacher and contact Ms. Gilbert, Counselor for PK-2: [email protected] .

This semester, small counseling groups will be offered on the topics below for K-2nd Grades:
  • School Skills (8 sessions) will focus on being a successful student and work habits. We will work on following group rules, getting along with others, listening to the teacher, avoiding distractions, finishing activities, working when things are hard, doing things you have to but don't want to, and having a good attitude.
  • Self-esteem (6 sessions) will focus on having a positive self-concept and resiliency. We will work on feelings, growing and learning, celebrating uniqueness, building self-confidence, what to do when things are hard, and having a positive attitude.
  • Friendship (8 sessions) will focus on getting along with others and maintaining positive peer relationships. We will work on talking and listening, friendly behaviors, cooperating, being a good sport, problem-solving, what do when I don't get my way, what to do when I'm left out, and having a positive attitude.
  • Changing Families (6 sessions) will focus on coping with change and building resiliency. We will focus on celebrating uniqueness, what to do to understand and deal with feelings, what to do to be a good problem solver, what to do when I get mad, what to do when things are hard, and what to do to have a good attitude.

Thanks again,
Anna Gilbert (PK-2) & Dr. Steven Childs (3-5)
