Greetings Parents,
Please be reminded that students in grades 1, 3, and 5 will begin taking the ITBS on Wednesday, September 9, 2015. A detailed letter was sent home in courier on September 3, 2015 (click here to download the letter). Please be sure to review this letter for testing tips as well as testing dates. In addition, your commitment to having your child at school on testing days would be greatly appreciated. Testing will begin at approximately 8am and end by 10:30am on testing days. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to give me or your child's counselor a call. Sincerely, Audrey Baptiste AP/Testing Coordinator

From the PTO Co-Presidents
Now that our school schedule is settled, we know that many parents are beginning their volunteer positions in the classroom and around the school. Please remember to take the Mandatory Volunteer Training online. This is a mandatory training for all parent volunteers who will work with children within the school system. Please see the section below for more details.
Our first Spirit Night is at Chick-fil-A on Tuesday, September 8th from 5-8 pm. Come out and show your support for DES. Remember to mention DES when ordering. 20% of the proceeds will be donated to DES. Thank you to our Family Events chair, Amanda Becker and Jordan Winters for coordinating all our spirit nights this year.
Our School Store is open for business. We offer fun pencils, erasers and other school supplies. Please stop by and see what we have. Spirit Wear may also be purchased and ordered through our School Store. The store will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:10 - 7:40am. As always, we are looking for volunteers to help. Volunteer Parking:
Volunteers are constantly coming and going, and we know it's more difficult to come and go during morning and afternoon carpool. For this reason, we ask that all volunteers park in the east parking lot (cafeteria side) so that you can easily come and go, even during peak traffic times.
One last note, there are a lot of planned events at DES this year outside of school hours. We love that your children want to play on the playground during these times! Please remember however, for everyone's safety, your children must be supervised.
No School on Monday

There is no school tomorrow, Monday, September 7th, in observance of Labor Day. Enjoy your day off! We look forward to seeing you around school.
Jennifer Fenmore and Megan Cann
PTO Co-Presidents

Mandatory Volunteer Training
The State of Georgia Mandatory Reporting Law was revised expanding the listing of persons who are now categorized as mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect. This list now includes anyone who volunteers in a school.
To ensure that all school volunteers are aware of the new responsibilities and penalties associated with non-compliance, ALL VOLUNTEERS ARE REQUIRED BY LAW to go through a brief training presentation created by DeKalb County Schools on the mandatory reporting of abuse and neglect and what it means to be a mandated reporter.
The training MUST be completed before volunteering. You must also complete the certificate affirming that you have watched the video presentation and understand your obligations as a mandated reporter.
Both the presentation and certificate can be accessed on the DES Website - Parent Resources section. The site has been updated with the link to the video.
Volunteers must complete this training every year.
If you have any questions regarding the presentation or your obligations as a reporter, please contact the school's social worker.
