From Our Principal
Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend Curriculum Night. It's important to know the classroom procedures as well as the grade level curriculum. If you were not able to attend, please ask your child's teacher to provide you with written information.
We are excited to welcome our new fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Jessica Whittemore! Mrs. Whittemore comes to us with a great deal of teaching experience. Most recently, she was employed by Cobb County as an ESOL teacher. She is excited to be a part of the Dunwoody Elementary community!
Additionally, we also welcome our new interrelated teacher, Mrs. Patsy Ridley! Mrs. Ridley most recently taught in Gwinnett County, and we are thrilled about the expertise she brings to our school.
Current enrollment at DES is just over one thousand students! At this time, we are able to house all our students and classes inside the building; however, a trailer is available for additional small group teaching space to be used as needed. Our School Council is working on your behalf to make sure there is a visionary plan from the district regarding community growth. Part of the plan includes the proposal to rebuild Austin Elementary to accommodate more students. I encourage you to take an active role in knowing what changes might be in store for our community.
Change of Testing Dates: DeKalb County School District changed the testing calendar for the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) and ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills) to remove all potential conflicts with religious observances. The change is due in part to the "behind the scenes" work of several DES parents and community members. For clarification, correspondence to the community from the school was lagging due to the pending changes coming from the district. While I am sorry that much emotional stress was incurred during the process, I am relieved that our calendar is now equitable and sensitive to all students.
The CogAT and ITBS are standardized tests used in the gifted identification process for students in grades 1, 3, and 5. The revised testing calendar follows:
- September 9, 10, 11, 16, 18, and 21 - ITBS
- September 22, 23, 24, and 25 - ITBS make-up
- Oct. 5, 6, and 7 - CogAT
- Oct. 8 - CogAT make-up
I hope that everyone has a great Labor Day weekend!

From the PTO Co-Presidents
We had a great showing of dads on Friday morning for All Pro Dad. Thank you Chris Wilburn for organizing these monthly events!
We would also like to thank our Spirit Wear chair, Lauren Middlebrooks, for all her hard work. Spirit Wear is in hot demand, and we appreciate Lauren's efforts over the summer in making sure we were well stocked!
And thank you to all the teachers for the great information on curriculum nights! The PTO appreciates the support of all those who paid their annual dues. We hope you enjoy your DES STEM shirt! If you did not pick up your shirt on Registration Day, or on Curriculum Night, please let us know.
Let us know when you volunteer! We are challenging all parents to volunteer in the school or at home for a minimum of 10 hours per semester. A great way to get involved with the Dunwoody Elementary PTO is to join a committee that interests you. At the end of each month, we will reward our volunteers with a random drawing for a prize and the volunteer with the most hours logged will get their own parking space for the month. To be eligible, you must log your volunteer hours.
Also, save the date for our annual Tour de Dunwoody. This year our Family Fun Bike Ride is on Saturday, October 17th. Stay tuned for additional details over the next few weeks. We look forward to seeing you around school.

DES Directory 2015-16
Hello Parents of DES!
As you may or may not know, last year, we switched from a printed, to an ONLINE DIRECTORY available for your use. It includes parents' contact information along with their registered DES kids and home room teachers. It is a private ONLINE DIRECTORY only available to DES families.
On September 1st, we will upload this year's PTO registration data (parent, child, email, and phone) into the ONLINE DIRECTORY. If you would like to OPT OUT of this process, please send an email to: destechpto@gmail.com with both parent's names and child's name by the end of the day on Monday, August 31. You will have the opportunity to verify and/or correct your data after the upload is complete.

All unclaimed Lost and Found items will be donated on the 1st and 15th of every month. Parent Needs Assessment
Welcome back! We hope you and your family had a wonderful summer break.
Now that we've returned, Dr. Childs and I are so excited for this new year of helping students achieve academic, personal, and social success! We've already started putting up some of the collegiate pennants donated by everone last school year - thanks again!
In order to best meet the needs of our students and your children, we are looking to you for feedback and collaboration. We've created a parent needs assessment in order to review and improve our program.
Thank you for taking the time to answer the questions in this survey. Your honest response to all questions will assist in the review of the School Counseling Program. All responses will be kept confidential and will be used to improve how the School Counseling Program helps our students, parents, teachers, and administrators.
Click on the following hyperlink, and it will take you to the assessment: Dunwoody ES Parent Needs Assessment.
Also, be sure to check out our counseling website to see what programs, guidance lessons, small groups, and activities we have planned this month! www.DunwoodyESCounseling.weebly.com
We look forward to hearing from you!
Sincerely,
Ms. Gilbert School Counselor PreK-2nd Grades
