Announcements

From the PTO Co-Presidents

This is the final edition of the Tiger Talk e-newsletter until later in the summer. A special thanks to all DES parents for their time and financial support as we work to enhance our children's school.

I hope you and your children enjoyed all of the academic and social activities the PTO organized throughout the year including Book Fair, Tour de Dunwoody, Field Days, Visiting Author, Picture Days, and the Yearbook to name a few. This school year, we purchased new technology for the school, sound panels in both the cafeteria and gymnasium, made improvements to the grounds, teacher training seminars, and supported many other academic enhancements.

In addition, the playground committee met with DCSS officials last week. The PTO, in partnership with DCSS, have agreed upon funding, a design plan, and time line. We are hopeful that work can commence to remediate the playground drainage in early June. The project should take several weeks to complete!

We finish the year in a strong financial position, ready for a solid start in August. All of these accomplishments could not have been done without the following group of dedicated PTO volunteers:

  • Rosemary Watts, VP of Ways and Means
  • Jan Jay, VP of Communications
  • Jennifer Boettcher, VP of Programs
  • Alison Woodrow, Treasurer
  • Terica Harleaux, Financial Secretary
  • Kim Becker, Secretary
  • Lauren Middlebrooks, Parliamentarian

It has been a pleasure serving on the PTO this year and working with this wonderful group of parents.

As summer starts, it's hard to believe we're already working on next year's events! To stay informed over the summer about online registration,

early registration incentives for families, updates from our Principal, and volunteer opportunities, please stay-tuned to Tiger Talk. You won't want to miss out on any information over the summer!

Thank you, and have a great summer!

 Information about the Austin Rebuild

As you may be aware, feasibility studies and discussions have occurred concerning a rebuild or renovation of Austin Elementary School.  Austin has requested that the new or renovated structure house their current level of enrollment or about 600 to 700 students.  The present District prototype for elementary schools consists of 900+ students.  By way of example, DES was constructed with a capacity of 973 students in 2009.  In this regard, the School Council has written District Board members and administration expressing concern and advocating that Austin be rebuilt or renovated to house a greater number of students.  Given that present Dunwoody cluster elementary schools are over capacity, we believe it is only equitable that the new Austin be able to absorb more students and future growth.

If you have any questions, please contact School Council Chair Courtney Lamb (courtml2003@aol.com note: corrected email), or any member of School Council.
