Announcements

From the PTO Co-Presidents

As the 2014-2015 school year comes to an end, we must recognize our wonderful DES teachers, staff, and volunteers for making this a terrific year! We are thankful for everyone who stepped in for events and who donated their time and talents. We are grateful to all of the Committee Chairs who worked tirelessly this year to bring our students and families wonderful programs and events, shower our faculty and staff with gifts, and raise monies to support the Tiger Fund.

Thank you to all of the families that donated to the Tiger Fund this year! With your donations we raised over $80,000! Thank you for helping to make Dunwoody Elementary an amazing school for all of our children. Some of the events and projects funded by the Tiger Fund this year were:

*  Sound Panels in both the Cafeteria and Gymnasium

*  Purchase of 10 Mac Computers to complete the Mac Lab

*  Orton Gillingham certification for all K and 1st grade teachers

*  Organic Garden allowed students to grow and harvest vegetables

*  Online Student and Family Directory free to all families

*  5th Grade Writing Workshop with Carmen Deedy

Over 90% of our families paid their Annual Dues! Again, thank you for your generous donation. Without your Annual Dues payment, we would not be able to fund the following:

*  Staff Gifts - Cash gifts for all Faculty, Staff, and Bus Drivers at

   both Winter and Summer Break

*  Field Day T-Shirts

*  Classroom Enrichment Stipend for all Certified Personnel

   teaching our children

Thank you to our current Executive Committee for all of your hard work. Some of our favorite events and those that we felt were most successful this year include:

*   School Supply Drive for Fairington Elementary

*   On-line Registration

*   2 Grounds Days and the installation of a Butterfly Garden

*   "Where in the World is Mrs. Sanders"

*   Yearbook!

*   Tour de Dunwoody with over 200 Riders

*   2 Book Fairs with Record Sales

Thank you to all of our parent volunteers for helping make this school year wonderful. In addition, we are happy to provide you with more information about PTO monies, please reach out to us directly.

Last day of school is Friday! Dismissal procedures will be the same throughout the week. However, due to class parties and the number of parents who will be in the school on Friday, please be sensitive to the fact that children will not be participating in their normal class schedule. Please remember to follow the End of the Year Party guidelines as well. Only approved party parents will be allowed into classrooms on Friday afternoon.

On behalf of the PTO, we would like to wish all of our DES families a safe and happy summer! We look forward to seeing many of you in August for Registration Day. Please be on the look out for information in Tiger Talk over the summer for updates on changes to Registration Day.

Best wishes for a great last week of school and a wonderful summer break.

Thank you!

 Information about the Austin Rebuild

As you may be aware, feasibility studies and discussions have occurred concerning a rebuild or renovation of Austin Elementary School.  Austin has requested that the new or renovated structure house their current level of enrollment or about 600 to 700 students.  The present District prototype for elementary schools consists of 900+ students.  By way of example, DES was constructed with a capacity of 973 students in 2009.  In this regard, the School Council has written District Board members and administration expressing concern and advocating that Austin be rebuilt or renovated to house a greater number of students.  Given that present Dunwoody cluster elementary schools are over capacity, we believe it is only equitable that the new Austin be able to absorb more students and future growth.

If you have any questions, please contact School Council Chair Courtney Lamb (courtmla2003@aol.com), or any member of School Council.

 One Week left to Preorder School Supplies!

For the second year in a row, the DES PTO is offering you an easy way to order school supplies for the 2015-2016 school year.

This year, we are partnering with SchoolKidz to help make the transition to the new school year more convenient for families.

To start, go to the website below and put in our school code to find supply lists and pricing for every grade (remember to choose the grade your child will start in the fall).

You must order before the end of the school year on May 22.

The supplies will be sent to your home the week of July 26th.

www.shopttkits.com

Our school code is 74509

*Unlike last year, shipping IS included in the price listed, so there are no surprises at checkout.

**Please note that there are slight differences in pricing for girls and boys for some grades. Their lists include a few different items for the classroom. For example, the list for 1st-grade boys includes antibacterial soap.

For 1st-grade girls, the list includes hand sanitizer.

Upcoming Events

Rescheduled Performance:

DES Concert Band

Please join us on Monday, May 18, 2015 at 7pm for our final concert at
Peachtree Charter Middle School. PCMS has very graciously invited us to join them in their spring concert which will take place outside on the
running track.

Please bring a chair or blanket and join us "Chastain Style."

End of Year Celebrations

The End of the Year Celebrations for DES will be held on Friday, May 22, from 1 - 2pm. Due to limited parking and space constraints, three volunteers (in addition to the teacher) are allowed at each celebration. Room Parents will help secure volunteers for each classroom and provide a list of those expected to attend to the front office.

Certainly, all parents can help by sending in approved items needed for the celebration. Since we have many students with severe food allergies, teachers and Room Parents will consult the parents of those children to approve all food expected to be consumed at the party.

Our students at DES have accomplished SO much this year and we want to celebrate their great efforts and success. Our End of the Year Celebrations do just that --- and it's a terrific opportunity to kick-start Summer break!

  Box Top

DES!  Great job collecting Box Tops for Education!  Your efforts yielded an additional $360 for DES! Congratulations AGAIN to Mrs. Lowe's first grade class for bringing in the most Box Tops and therefore winning the opportunity to have five extra minutes of recess!  Also, kudos to Jack Troha (Mrs. Nugent), Harper Jane Lane (Ms. Culbreath), Kate Little (Mrs. Lowe)!  Their names were randomly drawn from a pool of students who contributed Box Tops.

Keep collecting over the summer!  This is an easy way to earn cash for DES!  Thanks for your participation!
