Announcements

From Our Principal

Happy Mother's Day!

It was great to see so many students and families walking to school last week!  Thank you for supporting our event!  On your walk, you may have noticed a new addition to our front garden.  We now have a lending library compliments of former DES student, Kate Smith.  Kate completed the project as part of her requirements for earning a Girl Scout Silver Award.  Please feel free to lend a book or to borrow a book!

Our Girls on the Run have just finished their season by completing a 5K race (in the rain)!  Congratulations to all the girls on their accomplishment! As a part of their program, the girls participated in a philanthropic project for Ecosneakers. They collected as many sneakers as possible to give to others in need or to use for playground mulch. I'm happy to report that our girls won the competition by collecting the most shoes!

I hope that everyone is taking time to enjoy the beautiful days of Spring, and the last few days of a great school year! While one school year is ending, we are gearing up for an even better year next year.  Already, we have hired a computer lab teacher so that we can really concentrate on growing the "T" in our STEM program. We are also planning very explicit ways to address rigor and student growth in ELA and Math.  I assure you that there are great things to come at DES so stay tuned!

Jennifer P. Sanders

Principal

From the PTO Co-Presidents

What a fantastic week with Walk to School Wednesday and Field Days on both Thursday and Friday!  Our students enjoyed fun and exciting activities, inflatable slides and fantastic music. What a great way to round out the week. A great big thank you to our Field Day Chair, Kris Mamaghani! Thank you to all of our parent volunteers who worked at stations, walked with classrooms and spent the day taking care of our students!

As the end of the school draws near, if you are a PTO Committee Chair and you have any outstanding receipts, please submit these expenses to our Treasurer, Alison Woodrow, no later than May 15th for reimbursement. Once again, thank you to all of our parent volunteers this year!

Happy Mother's Day to all of our DES Moms!

Thank you!

Amanda Rountree and Jennifer Fenmore

 After School Extended Day Program

Register for the Dunwoody Elementary After School Extended Day Program for the 2015-2016 School Year on May 15. A link will be activated on the DES website under the Parents > After School Program
tab. We will not be accepting paper applications.

You will be informed of program placement by June 1st. It is necessary for all students to apply to the program each school year. Priority will be given to families that are currently enrolled full time, and in good financial standing. Drop-in or part time students will only be admitted if space permits. Thank you for your interest in our program.

Two Weeks left to Preorder School Supplies!

For the second year in a row, the DES PTO is offering you an easy way to order school supplies for the 2015-2016 school year.

This year, we are partnering with SchoolKidz to help make the transition to the new school year more convenient for families.

You must order before the end of the school year on May 22.

The supplies will be sent to your home the week of July 26th.

DES Dads, please come to our All Pro Dad Breakfast this month.

Friday, May 15

6:45 to 7:45am

Please arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria (6:45 - 7:15am)

Program will begin in the media center at 7:20.

This month's topic is "Being a Dad Forever"

"All Pro Dad is a simple idea with a profound impact. It's a one-

hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their

children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria.

During this time, we will discuss a wide range of family topics,

spend time together, create fun memories, and leave equipped

with resources to strengthen your relationship with your child."

The program is fun and free! All you need to do is attend, and if you want to purchase breakfast, you may do so in the cafeteria by using your child's "mylunchmoney" account, cash or check ($1.65 adults, $1.20 children). If you do not have a "mylunchmoney" account, please register for one at

www.mylunchmoney.com before the meeting.

End of Year Celebrations

The End of the Year Celebrations for DES will be held on Friday, May 22, from 1 - 2pm. Due to limited parking and space constraints, three volunteers (in addition to the teacher) are allowed at each celebration. Room Parents will help secure volunteers for each classroom and provide a list of those expected to attend to the front office.

Certainly, all parents can help by sending in approved items needed for the celebration. Since we have many students with severe food allergies,
teachers and Room Parents will consult the parents of those children to approve all food expected to be consumed at the party.

Our students at DES have accomplished SO much this year and we want to celebrate their great efforts and success. Our End of the Year Celebrations do just that --- and it's a terrific opportunity to kick-start Summer break!

Get Involved

 Donate a Yearbook

DES has a number of students that are unable to afford a Yearbook. With your help, we'd like to get a Yearbook into all students hands. Students unable to purchase Yearbooks have been identified and with your generosity we'd like to donate 50 Yearbooks to students. In addition, our Yearbook company representative has agreed to purchase and donate several Yearbooks.

Please consider donating a Yearbook to a student in need at DES.  Your $35 gift will help a child have a keepsake of memories of his/her year at school that will last a lifetime.  You may donate a Yearbook by sending in a check to "Jostens" with memo "Yearbook Donation." Please place your  check in an envelope marked "Yearbook Donation" and place in the PTO mailbox in the school foyer by Friday, May 15. This is also a tax deductible gift.  If you have any questions, please e-mail Nancy Wamsley at heynjw@comcast.net.
