From Our Principal
Greetings!
A huge Thank You goes out to our parent community and the PTO for a wonderful Staff Appreciation Week! Our staff members have felt very loved and appreciated by all! As Principal, I appreciate all that you do to make our staff members feel special in light of budget cuts and increased workloads. Teachers remain at schools because they enjoy the work environment, and I truly believe they love our DES parents and students! Thank you!
I hope that you will try to join us for our Principal's Coffee on March 18 at 7:45am. The PTO graciously paid for our kindergarten and first grade teachers to receive a full week of Orton Gillingham reading training. This is a rigorous, research-based program that increases students reading achievement. At the Principal's Coffee, the teachers will explain portions of the program along with particular pieces that can be used at home.
Also, there has been a lot of talk about Lexile scores and student achievement. While we are doing a great job of making sure students achieve on State accountability tests, are we really pushing all students to "growth"? Lexile reading levels are a great way to encourage children to read at their appropriate levels and to even reach a little higher. What a great way to kick off a summer reading program at your house!! Ms. Gurin, Media Specialist, will be available at the Principal's Coffee to help you better understand Lexile scores and levels.
Our fifth grade students just completed a coding class offered by a former parent's company. Students were scheduled for one hour in the lab where they focused on writing basic computer codes. The training is always a big hit and it is amazing what our students can accomplish. As I attend more and more technology conferences and meetings, I'm hearing that students need exposure to coding and "App" creation in order to become more successful in the future. As a part of our STEM certification, we will focus more on technology during the 2015-2016 school year including more creative, integrated use of our new Mac Lab.
Remember to support our Book Fair this week and please join us for All Pro Dads!

DHS Honors Ian Davis
On Thursday, March 26th, please come out and show your love and support as Dunwoody Baseball honors #5 Ian Joseph Davis. The DHS Alumni and Baseball family tragically lost one of its own on June 29, 2014. Ian Davis arrived on campus in August 2009. His academic, athletic and social skill set had an immediate impact inside and outside the classroom as well as on and off the baseball field. He was a 2010 DHS Graduate and went on to receive a Bachelor degree in Risk Management from UGA in 2014. Ian and his family will forever be in our hearts and prayers. He will truly be missed by the countless lives he touched in his short life. T-shirts honoring Ian are available for purchase: http://goo.gl/forms/j0mBg7fJiR.
All proceeds will go to the Ian Davis Memorial Foundation. Please join us as we honor #5 at the Dunwoody vs. Stephenson Varsity Baseball Game on March 26th, pre-game ceremony begins about 5:30pm.
