From Our Principal
Greetings!
On Thursday, January 15, we held our annual school Spelling Bee. Mrs. Saltman did a great job organizing the event and deciphering all the new rules and regulations. Our students were quite amazing in their performance, and I am envious of their spelling abilities! After about an hour and fifteen minutes of spelling, we emerged with a winner and alternate. Fourth grade student Dhruv Advani will represent DES at the DeKalb County Spelling Bee, and fourth grade student, Jaikanishka Rajkumar, will serve as the alternate. Congratulations to these two top spellers!
A huge congratulations goes out to our Dunwoody Singers and wonderful Mrs. Yvonne Miller! They sang the National Anthem at the January 21st Atlanta Hawks game! Thank you for representing our school so exceptionally well!
Parents of students in grades 3, 4, and 5, we've added new GA Milestone resources to the Dunwoody Elementary website. You will need to look under the "Parent" tab and then choose "Testing Information". We've posted new assessment guides that the district recently pushed out to all the schools. The guides are mostly informative about the format of the test, and hopefully they will help allay some of our families' concerns.
We have several teachers or paraprofessionals out on extended leave. I do appreciate the patience of all parents as we work through these situations. I know that a substitute is never an optimal situation, but sometimes, it is unavoidable. Our grade chairs and assistant principals work closely with all substitutes to keep the instruction consistent and on track with the other homerooms. The mission of our staff is to make sure every student is academically successful. I look forward to seeing parents at our upcoming Principal's Coffee on Wednesday, January 28 where Nancy Obenschain will explain the process for gifted eligibility.

From Our PTO Co-Presidents
Have you seen the images of the fire damage at Fairington Elementary School in Lithonia? They are heart-breaking. DeKalb school officials believe someone set fire to a Kindergarten classroom last weekend.
"Our hearts go out to our DeKalb friends at Fairington Elementary," said Jennifer Sanders, principal of Dunwoody Elementary Schools in a News Release last week. "The DeKalb School District may be large, but we are still family. We take care of each other."
Here is a story with additional information: http://www.11alive.com/story/news/local/stone-mountain-lithonia/2015/01/18/after-arson-class-held/21957909/
