From Our Principal
Greetings!
Happy New Year! We have started January with mild weather, and our fingers are crossed that it continues throughout our winter. If there is a chance for inclement weather, make sure to tune into your local weather station for the latest school closings or delays. The Superintendent's Office communicates first through the local media.
Students in grades 1, 3, and 5 were administered the ITBS and CogAT during October. These results arrived in our building last week and should have been in TIP last Thursday. The results from these assessments are used primarily as a piece of the eligibility component for our Gifted program. Our Gifted liaison, Nancy Obenschain, will share more information regarding the eligibility process at our January Principal's Coffee.
The next time you visit the school, take a moment to see the new sound panels in our gym and cafeteria. While we knew that the panels would make a noticeable difference in our sound quality, we didn't know just how noticeable! The change in sound quality is dramatic and our teachers are so appreciative! Thank you PTO!
We are in the last push before our students in grades 3, 4, and 5 take the new Georgia Milestone Assessment. Teachers have been involved all year in professional development for content area writing, and they are regularly instructing students using exemplars designed to mimic the upcoming test. Students are also keeping content area journals where they have to explain how they reached an answer. Teachers feel confident that our students are prepared for the new testing format.
Thank you for being a great community! Your support makes Dunwoody Elementary a wonderful place to work and a great place to send your children.

From Our PTO Co-Presidents
Have you heard? Sound panels were installed in both the cafeteria and gymnasium last week! Although these spaces are still noisy, the piercing noise reverberations are gone. We can actually hear Ms. Reynolds and Coach K speak while students are in gym class. With the help of all of our DES families that donated to the Tiger Fund, the PTO was able to purchase sound panels and DeKalb County Schools paid for the installation. Thank you!
We had another great Spirit Night last Tuesday. Thank you to all of the DES families that participated! We also had great attendance on Friday for All Pro Dad. We have had a great turn-out for all of these events this school year, so please make sure you take advantage of all that Dunwoody Elementary School has to offer.
Please remember that there is NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY, JANUARY 19th, in observance of Martin Luther King's Birthday.
Amanda Rountree and Jennifer Fenmore

The time has come to choose our PTO Executive Committee for next year. At a very brief PTO meeting in the cafeteria, on Thursday, January 22nd at 5:30pm, we will elect the Nominating Committee.
This Committee will create a slate of officers for the PTO Executive Committee for 2015-2016. Any member of the PTO who is in good standing and has paid their membership dues can take part in this process. You can suggest someone to serve on the Nominating Committee or you can volunteer yourself to serve. We will vote on 7 members and 1 alternate for the Nominating Committee.
Please contact Lauren Middlebrooks (cam2brooks@gmail.com) for additional information or to nominate a PTO member to serve on the Nominating Committee.

Parents of rising Pre-K and Kindergarten students, as well as any parents interested in learning more about DES, are invited to attend. Guests will have the opportunity to meet our principal, assistant principals and PTO representatives, and learn more about our school.
We look forward to sharing our school! Please spread the word to your neighbors and friends with elementary-age children who live in the DES community.

DCPC Volunteers Needed
The Dunwoody Chamblee Parents' Council currently has 3 vacant board positions (Co-President, Treasurer and Recording Secretary). The remaining positions have terms that expire in May. As of today, there is no one to take these positions.
DCPC is a very important organization and part of a larger network of Regional Parent Councils in DeKalb County. If we want our Dunwoody/Chamblee cluster to remain strong and have a voice in school board decisions, district staff decisions, and the local politics that affect our schools, we need to have a strong organization. Serving on the DCPC Board would be a great next step for anyone that may be rolling off their local School Council term but would still like to stay involved and have a voice in some of the larger issues our school system and region will be facing (including, but certainly not limited to: superintendent hiring, redistricting, charter petitions, etc).
If you can help or know someone who can, please let us know. Thanks, Leslie Freymann DCPC Corresponding Secretary

Student College Awareness...
Need Your Help
College and career readiness is crucial for student success at all levels. The Dunwoody Elementary School Counseling Department wants to increase our students' college awareness and knowledge by exposing them to college and careers as early as possible. One of our ideas is to display pennants in our hallway with an "All Students College and Career Ready" theme to promote a college-bound school culture. To do this, we are asking colleges, community organizations, and our PTO and greater parent network for any pennant donations which would help us meet our goal of maximizing students' college readiness.
Thank you for your continued support!
Sincerely,
Anna Gilbert and Dr. Steven Childs
