From Our PTO Co-Presidents
The PTO has received an overwhelming response from the DES staff and bus drivers for the holiday gift we were able to give them, thank you to all families that paid their Annual Dues! Each staff member and bus driver enjoyed a cash gift just prior to winter break. We wanted the DES Community to know that they have sent us a huge message of gratitude and appreciation. We would also like to thank our Staff Appreciation Chairs, Kim Rivera and Terica Harleaux, for organizing the distribution of funds, no small feat!
The PTO General Membership Meeting and Nominating Committee Election is on Thursday, January 22nd at 5:30pm in the cafeteria. We are preparing for the 2015-201 school year by voting, and electing, our 2014-2015 Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee is charged with putting together the slate of PTO Executive Committee officers for next year. If you are interested in serving on the Nominating Committee, please contact Lauren Middlebrooks, cam2brooks@gmail.com , for additional information. Nominations can also be taken from the floor on Thursday evening. Please join us on January 22nd as we elect those individuals.
Our Prospective Parent Night is on Thursday, January 22nd at 6:00pm, immediately following our PTO General Membership meeting. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to get to know our school. Please spread the word about all the wonderful things that are happening at Dunwoody Elementary, and send your friends and neighbors to Prospective Parent Night.
We look forward to seeing you this Tuesday night at our Shane's Rib Shack and Ali's Cookies Spirit Night.
Happy New Year!

DES Spirit Night
Join us for a "Saucy and Sweet" Spirit Night on Tuesday, January 13th, from 5-8pm at Shane's Rib Shack and Ali's Cookies in the Target Shopping Center. Enjoy some delicious BBQ at Shane's and then walk (or drive) over to Ali's for dessert.
Bring your appetite and invite friends and family because a percentage of all the sales goes back to DES. Just remember to say you are there for Spirit Night at both locations so we can be credited accordingly.
Thank you to all our DES families who support our Spirit nights!

Dunwoody Chamblee Parents' Council
Please join us Tuesday, January 13th at 7pm at the Chamblee High School Auditorium for our next DCPC meeting.
We've changed the topic from 'testing standards' to instead have a meeting and forum for sharing important updates and information related to our school board, superintendent search and the charter school movement/petitions.
Our District School Board Member, Stan Jester, will be there to give updates and answer questions. In addition, we are hoping to have someone representing PROACT, the company hired to conduct the new Superintendent search, to give us an update on the process, etc. There will also be parents and others who are highly involved in the Charter School Petitions to give us updates and answer questions.
Also, please consider joining our board. We have positions open now and more available in May. Follow this link or see below for more information.
We hope to see you there!

DES Dads, please come to our All Pro Dad Breakfast this month.
Friday, January 16
6:45 to 7:45am
Please arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria (6:45 - 7:15am)
Program will begin in the media center at 7:20.
This month's topic is "Living a Life of Significance"
All Pro Dad Dad's Day is a simple idea with a profound impact. It's a one-hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria. During this time, we will discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and leave equipped with resources to strengthen your relationship with your child.
The program is fun and free!
All you need to do is attend, and if you want to purchase breakfast, you may do so in the cafeteria by using your child's "mylunchmoney" account, cash or check ($1.65 adults, $1.20 children). If you do not have a "mylunchmoney" account, please register for one at www.mylunchmoney.com before the meeting.
To help with keeping the parking lot and carpool drop off running smoothly, please park at GA Perimeter College and walk over to school.
Please visit our chapter website for dates and more information.

From the DES Recycling Committee
As a reminder: The school is set up to collect your recycling items. Some of the items we collect will be mailed in for credit and others will be deposited in appropriate locations throughout Dunwoody. Please adhere to the following when dropping off your recycling at the school:
- We are only accepting cell phones, rechargeable batteries (alkaline batteries can be thrown away), markers (all types from dry erase to Crayola), plastic grocery bags and printer cartridges.
- Please do not put anything else but these items listed above in the recycling containers
- The recycling center is located in the school lobby to the left of the cafeteria entrance. We have boxes labeled for each of the items.
- Please help us with this initiative by bringing in your recyclables but only those listed and please do not put anything else in the containers
Thank you for your assistance and if you want to help with the efforts, please contact Shari Wassell at shariwassell@gmail.com.
Let's all work to save the planet!

DCPC Volunteers Needed
The Dunwoody Chamblee Parents' Council currently has 3 vacant board positions (Co-President, Treasurer and Recording Secretary). The remaining positions have terms that expire in May. As of today, there is no one to take these positions.
DCPC is a very important organization and part of a larger network of Regional Parent Councils in DeKalb County. If we want our Dunwoody/Chamblee cluster to remain strong and have a voice in school board decisions, district staff decisions, and the local politics that affect our schools, we need to have a strong organization. Serving on the DCPC Board would be a great next step for anyone that may be rolling off their local School Council term but would still like to stay involved and have a voice in some of the larger issues our school system and region will be facing (including, but certainly not limited to: superintendent hiring, redistricting, charter petitions, etc).
If you can help or know someone who can, please let us know. Thanks, Leslie Freymann DCPC Corresponding Secretary

Student College Awareness...
Need Your Help
College and career readiness is crucial for student success at all levels. The Dunwoody Elementary School Counseling Department wants to increase our students' college awareness and knowledge by exposing them to college and careers as early as possible. One of our ideas is to display pennants in our hallway with an "All Students College and Career Ready" theme to promote a college-bound school culture. To do this, we are asking colleges, community organizations, and our PTO and greater parent network for any pennant donations which would help us meet our goal of maximizing students' college readiness.
Thank you for your continued support!
Sincerely,
Anna Gilbert and Dr. Steven Childs
