Announcements

From Our PTO Co-Presidents

Welcome back to all our families!  We hope you had a wonderful break and we look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming events in the month of January.  Please remember that there is NO SCHOOL tomorrow and all students return on Tuesday, January 6th.

January 13 - Saucy and Sweet Spirit Night at Shane's Rib Shack and Ali's Cookies from 5 - 8pm.  A percentage of sales from this night will come directly back to DES.

January 16 - All Pro Dad starts at 6:45am. Please join along with other fathers and their children for this great hour long program.

January 22 - PTO General Membership Meeting to elect our Nominating Committee and Prospective Parent Night. Please spread the word about the many great things happening at DES and invite any prospective parents to this informational meeting at the school.  The meeting will begin at 5:30pm. and will be held in the cafeteria.

January 28 - Principal's Coffee - The topic of this informational meeting will be technology and will be held in the Media Center.

As we begin the second semester of the school year, be sure to think about how you can get involved at DES. There are many opportunities like volunteering in your child's classroom, helping in the media center or the cafeteria during lunchtime or working on one of the many PTO committees.  Your involvement at DES helps show your child that school is important.  Our PTO Website has a page dedicated to getting involved, including committee descriptions and contact information. We hope you will become involved! Let us know if we can help you find a way to be part of the volunteers at DES.

Happy New Year!

Amanda Rountree and Jennifer Fenmore

DES Dads, please come to our All Pro Dad Breakfast this month.

 Friday, January 16

6:45 to 7:45am

Please arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria (6:45 - 7:15am)

Program will begin in the media center at 7:20.

This month's topic is "Living a Life of Significance"

All Pro Dad Dad's Day is a simple idea with a profound impact. It's a one-hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria. During this time, we will discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and leave equipped with resources to strengthen your relationship with your child.

The program is fun and free!

All you need to do is attend, and if you want to purchase breakfast, you may do so in the cafeteria by using your child's "mylunchmoney" account, cash or check ($1.65 adults, $1.20 children). If you do not have a "mylunchmoney" account, please register for one at www.mylunchmoney.com before the meeting.

To help with keeping the parking lot and carpool drop off running smoothly, please park at GA Perimeter College and walk over to school.

Please visit our chapter website for dates and more information.

Nominating Committee Meeting

The time has come to choose our PTO Board for next year.  At a very brief PTO meeting in the cafeteria, on Thursday, January 22rd at 5pm, we will elect the Nominating Committee. This Committee will create a slate of officers for the PTO Executive Committee for 2015-2016. Any member of the PTO who is in good standing and has paid their membership dues can take part in this process. You can suggest someone to serve on the Nominating Committee or you can volunteer yourself to serve. We will vote on 7 members and 1 alternate for the Nominating Committee. Please contact Lauren Middlebrooks (cam2brooks@gmail.com) for additional information or to nominate a PTO member to serve on the Nominating Committee.

Prospective Parent Night

Our Prospective Parent Night is on Thursday, January 22nd at 6:00pm in the cafeteria, immediately following the PTO General Membership Meeting.   This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to get to know our school.  Please spread the word about all the wonderful things that are happening at DES and send your friends and neighbors to Prospective Parent Night.

Parents of rising Pre-K and Kindergarten students, as well as any parents interested in learning more about DES, are invited to attend. Guests will have the opportunity to meet our principal, assistant principals and PTO representatives, and learn more about our school. We look forward to sharing our school!  Please spread the word to your neighbors and friends with elementary-age children who live in the DES community.

Georgia Parent Survey

All parents are encouraged to participate in the Georgia Parent Survey. The data collected will be used to calculate the School Climate Star Rating for each school's State rating. However, there is no mandatory participation rate for parents. Parents can complete the survey using personal computers, smartphones or iPads. For parents that do not have access to the Internet, school administrators offer the opportunity to take the survey in the school Media Center. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. Data results from the Georgia Parent Survey will not be available to the public and will not be posted online. The link for the Georgia Parent Survey is: http://apps.gadoe.org/schoolclimate/parents.nsf/Survey.xsp

Box Tops

Thanks so much to those of you who have already turned in the plastic baggie that recently went home in TIP folders full of Box Tops! Please keep up the good work as the next deadline will be February. 13, 2015! For every 50 Box Tops turned in, students' names will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win a complimentary week of camp this summer at Dunwoody United Methodist Church! The class turning in the most will get to wear their pajamas to school one day! This is a simple way to earn cash for DES! Thank you! Megan Cann (megancann00@hotmail.com)
