Announcements

From Our PTO Co-Presidents

Can you believe it is December already? This school year is almost half over, and it has been great so far! Let us take a moment to highlight some of the great things that have happened through the DES PTO already!

Thanks to your very generous donations for our 4th Annual Tiger Fund campaign, we were able to raise $75,000 for our school & kids this year. As a reminder, your giving allows us to support cultural arts programs, financially donate to each classroom, and provide unique events for the children at Dunwoody Elementary, to name a few. Donations are still being accepted. Please check with your company to see if it has a matching program.

The PTO is working with DeKalb County Schools and is excited to announce that we have purchased sound panels for both the cafeteria and gymnasium! Our goal is for the sound panels to be installed over winter break which will significantly reduce the reverberation and noise in these areas.

Our DES PTO Staff Appreciation team has been hard at work to show our faculty and staff how appreciated they are. Through this committee, we showed our gratitude to each staff member with snacks, breakfast, lunch and other goodies. The week prior to winter break we will shower our entire DES faculty, staff and bus drivers with a nice monetary gift to kick off their holiday break as well as a week of Sweet Treats.

We have had very successful family events. DES families have joined for fun evenings to support our school with Chick Fil-A, Mad Italian, and CiCi's Pizza. Each business gave a portion of DES sales back to our school. This money goes directly to the school and helps fund the grounds and organic gardening projects; special visitors like authors Carmen Deedy and Tom Watson; janitorial supplies; free digital directory for all parents and staff, and general PTO costs. Spirit Night events like these are a great opportunity to visit with other DES families and create that DES community spirit! Look for more fun events in the spring.

As you can see, we are a productive and busy PTO. We have many exciting events coming up in the new year including more principal's coffees and visiting authors, field day, and a cultural arts potluck dinner. We are continuing to track volunteer hours (remember to shoot for 10 or more hours per semester) and would welcome any help with these mentioned events or other PTO related opportunities. Just email us to find out how you can get involved.

Our hope is that everyone has a safe and relaxing holiday season. Thank you for all you do to make DES a special place for our children.

Have a great week!

Amanda Rountree and Jennifer Fenmore

Georgia Parent Survey

All parents are encouraged to participate in the Georgia Parent Survey. The data collected will be used to calculate the School Climate Star Rating for each school's State rating. However, there is no mandatory participation rate for parents. Parents can complete the survey using personal computers, smartphones or iPads. For parents that do not have access to the Internet, school administrators offer the opportunity to take the survey in the school Media Center. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. Data results from the Georgia Parent Survey will not be available to the public and will not be posted online. The link for the Georgia Parent Survey is: http://apps.gadoe.org/schoolclimate/parents.nsf/Survey.xsp

Upcoming Events

Spirit Night at Chick-fil-A

Our next Spirit Night will be Tuesday, December 9th, from 5-8pm at the Perimeter Pointe Chick-fil-A. Come hungry and invite your friends because 20% of all your sales (eat in or drive thru) go back to DES!

Just remember to say you are here for Spirit Night so we can be credited accordingly. Stop by the 'Ice Dream' table to get your free 'Ice Dream' from the 3rd grade teachers!

Thank you to all our DES families who support our Spirit nights!

Winter Holiday Celebrations

The Winter Holiday Celebrations for DES will be held on Friday, December 19th, from 1 - 2pm. Due to limited parking and space constraints, three volunteers (in addition to the teacher) are allowed at each celebration. Room Parents will help secure volunteers for each classroom and provide a list of those expected to attend to the front office.

For those unable to assist, parents can certainly help by sending in approved items needed for the celebration. Since we have many students with severe food allergies, teachers and Room Parents will consult the parents of those children to approve all food expected to be consumed at the party.

Our students at DES always enjoy our Winter Holiday Celebrations. It's a great way to celebrate their hard work and accomplishments for 1st semester --- and a terrific opportunity to kick-start their Winter break.

Recognition

Thank You DES Families!

Thank you DES families! We collected over 150 pounds of candy for the

troops! Your contributions allowed Dentistry with a Difference to donate
800 pounds of candy to the USO. Your small act of kindness is going to
bring smiles to our service men and women around the world. We look
forward to making this an annual event.
