From our Principal
Greetings!
A BIG thank you to all the parents and students who supported our Grounds Day on Saturday! I think our campus is looking better than ever!
Amazingly, we have approached our first progress report period at the end of 4.5 weeks. Reports will go home in Thursday's T.I.P. If you have concerns about your child's grades, now is the time to reach out to the teacher to request a conference. If we get children on the right track early in the semester, we avoid confusion when final report cards are issued.
I enjoyed hosting students at our first Principal's Lunch this year. Students were randomly selected from the Tiger Paw tickets that were submitted for the month of August. Congratulations to Anushka Ganguly, Joshua Smiley, Ronald, Lim, Carter Daigle, Jayden Stewart, Maria Gracia, Olivia Shumway, Tamaya Walker, Ashley Hill, Harper Jane Lane, Bo Boettcher, Jett Goldstein, Derek Placius, Ofori Williams, Kathleen Blackburn, and Annie Peng.
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at our Family Night on Thursday. We are trying something new this year by allowing parents the opportunity to see the classrooms. Children are proud to show off their classroom and show parents the "important" things in the classroom. The evening will be a time to build community and get to know your community parents. Teachers will be available form 5:30 - 6:30 and the classrooms will be open from 5-7 PM.

From the PTO Co-Presidents
Last week was a great week for DES events! On Tuesday, our School Council got off to a running start with their first meeting and we had an outstanding Spirit Night at Chick-fil-A. The winner with the most participants is Mrs. Risinger's Kindergarten class.
In addition, we had a huge tu rnout for Grounds Day. Preparation was completed for new landscaping, the grounds were cleaned and spruced up, and the nature trail was cleared and mulched. Mrs. Shelton's class had the highest participation and will help Mrs. Sanders complete the Ice Bucket Challenge this week during their lunch. Thank you to all of the families that participated in these events. Any shovels or rakes left at DES during grounds day can be picked up from the side of the school near the dumpsters.
As we find ourselves in the middle of September, we look forward to a fun and exciting week ahead. The Book Fair is open for children and parents from Wednesday through Friday morning. Family Night is Thursday night and All Pro Dad is Friday morning. Please see more information regarding hours and volunteer opportunities below.
We have lots of exciting things happening at DES, so don't forget to ask your children what they did at school and check the PTO website (http://DunwoodyPTO.com) for upcoming events and online registration!

Mandatory Volunteer Training
The State of Georgia Mandatory Reporting Law was revised expanding the listing of persons who are now categorized as mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect. This list now includes anyone who volunteers in a school.
To ensure that all school volunteers are aware of the new responsibilities and penalties associated with non-compliance, ALL VOLUNTEERS ARE REQUIRED BY LAW to go through a brief training presentation created by DeKalb County Schools on the mandatory reporting of abuse and neglect and what it means to be a mandated reporter.
The training MUST be completed before volunteering. You must also complete the certificate affirming that you have watched the video presentation and understand your obligations as a mandated reporter.
Both the presentation and certificate can be accessed on the DES Website - Parent Resources section. The site has been updated with the link to the video.
Volunteers must complete this training every year.
If you have any questions regarding the presentation or your obligations as a reporter, please contact the school's social worker. School Social Worker - Isaura Roque Phone: 678-676-7135
