From Our Principal
Greetings!It was wonderful to see so many parents at our first Principal's Coffee last Tuesday. We discussed assessments that will be given this school year, and we heard from a district representative about the new Georgia Milestones Assessment. The information presented is located in Power Point documents on our school's website under Parent Resources. The Power Point also contains the dates for important assessments.Our teachers have been gearing-up for another great STEM year! This week they met as grade level teams with our STEM district representative to talk about what STEM instruction looks like. They are focused on instruction that is project based and an integration of math and science. In fact, we had a team of teachers write STEM curriculum for our grade levels this summer so that it will be easier for students to see the relationship between math and science.As we gear-up for our STEM visit this September, I want to remind everyone of the great STEM components associated with our DES program:- STEM Career Bank (Parents in the STEM industry willing to share their expertise with the students)
- Industry Partners
- Kindergarten and second grade gardens
- LEGO Lab
- Engineering Design Process (a problem solving model for all subjects)
- STEM Days (one day to explore the design process while engineering a solution to a problem)
- Integrated math and science curriculum
- Development of a school Nature Trail
- Writing across the curriculum using journals
- Using technology everyday to support and enhance instruction
We are committed to our STEM program, and we see that students are indeed excited. Grade levels that implemented the program with fidelity and deep understanding increased the Science test scores on the CRCT. Engaging instruction that is rigorous and focused works!Jennifer P. Sanders

From the PTO Co-Presidents
School is in full swing now and all of our systems are in place and seem to be working very well. With gratitude we want to acknowledge the various committees of your PTO that have been very busy behind the scenes making sure your teachers are supported, your children get the extra attention they deserve, and you as parents at DES are kept informed about the school's happenings, and are happy with your child's school.
We appreciate you!
- Our Hospitality Committee that organized the Welcome Back Coffee and our first Principal's Coffee;
- Our parents that helped in the kindergarten classrooms getting your child acclimated to their dismissal schedules;
- Our Grounds Committee that worked over the summer on beautifying the landscaping;
- Our Lunch Bunch parents who helped open ketchup packets and yogurt containers for your children and helped keep the cafeteria clean for a safe dining environment;
- Our Technology Committee for planning and overseeing our first digital Directory and Registration Day;
- Our Community Business Support team that has been working hard to find businesses in our community that want to show their support of our school.
We applaud you all!

DES Dads, please come to our All Pro Dad Breakfast this month.
Friday, August 29 - 6:45 to 7:45am
Please arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria (6:45 - 7:15am)
Program will begin in the media center at 7:20.
This month's topic is "Laughing Together"
All Pro Dad Dad's Day is a simple idea with a profound impact. It's a one-hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria. During this time, we will discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and leave equipped with resources to strengthen your relationship with your child.
The program is fun and free! All you need to do is attend, and if you want to purchase breakfast, you may do so in the cafeteria by using your child's "mylunchmoney" account, cash or check ($1.65 adults, $1.20 children). If you do not have a "mylunchmoney" account, please register for one at www.mylunchmoney.com before the meeting.
To help with keeping the parking lot and carpool drop off running smoothly, please park at GA Perimeter College and walk over to school.
Please visit our chapter website for dates and more information.

Transportation News
If your child goes home on the bus, and you are able to follow a Twitter account on your phone, please follow @DESALERTS. The process to sign up and/or receive text messages is simple. We will do our best to notify you when a bus is going to arrive late to your bus stop.
Please remind your child of his/her carpool or bus number - whatever their means of transportation is at the end of the school day. This will help teachers/staff ensure that your child gets to their car/bus on time.

Reminder about Lunch Visits
During August, everyone is learning new routines and procedures in school, and in the cafeteria. Parents are asked to wait until after Labor Day to visit for lunch.
Thanks!

Mandatory Volunteer Training
The State of Georgia Mandatory Reporting Law was revised expanding the listing of persons who are now categorized as mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect. This list now includes anyone who volunteers in a school.
To ensure that all school volunteers are aware of the new responsibilities and penalties associated with non-compliance, ALL VOLUNTEERS ARE REQUIRED BY LAW to go through a brief training presentation created by DeKalb County Schools on the mandatory reporting of abuse and neglect and what it means to be a mandated reporter.
The training MUST be completed before volunteering. You must also complete the certificate affirming that you have watched the video presentation and understand your obligations as a mandated reporter. Both the presentation and certificate can be accessed on the DES Website - Parent Resources section.
Volunteers must complete this training every year.
If you have any questions regarding the presentation or your obligations as a reporter, please contact the school's social worker. School Social Worker - Isaura Roque Phone: 678-676-7135

New Parent Portal Launch Delayed
Parents,
Our district has changed our database program and the parent portal provider to Infinite Campus. The program is currently not ready to push out the parent portal portion. The district has suggested August 25th as the launch date, and we are hoping that everything will be in place for this event. Please be patient and know that our teachers will enter grades as soon as the system allows.

Collect Your Box Tops
Now is the time to collect your Box Tops and turn them in to the "Box Tops Schoolhouse" located in the DES foyer!
What are Box Tops? They are those little rectangles that look like the one here, found on commonly used items such as General Mills cereals, Betty Crocker products, Ziplocs, Yoplait, Pillsbury, and so many more!
Please cut out the Box Tops and put them in a Ziploc bag labeled with your child's name and homeroom. Any number turned in is appreciated, but for every 50 collected, your child's name will be entered into a raffle. Five names will be drawn and prizes awarded!
The homeroom class collecting the most Box Tops will receive popsicles on the playground during recess as the prize! The first Box Tops deadline is
Friday, October 17!
Each Box Top is worth $0.10 in CASH to DES! These funds can be utilized for anything the school deems appropriate such as technology enhancements, teacher training, playground improvements, AND MORE! Our goal this year is to raise $2,000 with funds generated from Box Tops! Share this information with grandparents, neighbors, and friends as anyone can help us reach our goal.
To learn more, and for a complete list of products as well as information about e-Box Tops, please visit www.btfe.com!
Please contact Megan Cann with any questions!

Lunch Bunch Needs You!
Lunch Bunch is a group of volunteers who help out in the cafeteria during lunch. It's a great way to see your child at their lunchtime! Lunch bunch volunteers help children with their lunch needs (opening containers and cleaning up small messes etc.).
Come and meet your child's classmates and get to see what your child actually eats for lunch! This is a great volunteer opportunity for those who have preschool aged children and those who have an irregular work schedule because you can choose what days and shifts you can help! There is a choice of 2 shifts, either 10:30am - 11:45am or 11am - 12:30pm. Even if you are available for only part of that time, please contact us, we still need the help!
Please email Rosemary Gorham at rosemary_gorham@hotmail.com or Andrea Perez at apmdre@hotmail.com if you are able to help!
