Announcements

From our Principal

Greetings!

The first week of school was amazingly smooth and almost glitch free! It is always such a pleasure and a joy to work with your children who are incredibly polite and well mannered. We have completed our beginning of the year assemblies with grades 2-5, and all students were attentive and eager!

During the assemblies, students learned to try something new or improve an old skill. They will write journal entries in class about their personal goals. Students also learned of famous people who experienced a great deal of failure prior to achieving success like Michael Jordan and Walt Disney. Students are encouraged to embrace failure as a part of the learning process.

Our younger students have been spending time getting to know each other through classroom culture building activities. Students are learning the names of their peers and helpful staff members in the building. Our young students are becoming very familiar with the building which leads to their independence.

We encourage parents to allow students more independent space during this second week of school. We ask that you no longer walk students all the way to the classroom door but let them walk down the hallway on their own. Parents can watch from the foyer. We also want students to try the bus or carpool in the mornings. We appreciate help from parents in the development of happy, independent students!

Jennifer P. Sanders
Principal, Dunwoody Elementary School

From the PTO Co-Presidents

We had a wonderful first week of school at DES!  Students, thank you for bringing excitement and smiles back to school.  Parents, thank you for your patience.  Volunteers, thank you for your countless hours.  Faculty and staff, thank you for all your hard work!

Thank you to all of the parents that have paid the Tiger Fund! With 90% of DES families registering with PTO, 62% have contributed the full $125 Tiger Fund and 71% have contributed to the Tiger Fund! Of all of the families that did contribute, the average donation was $123. We are thrilled by your generosity and thank you for supporting all of the wonderful programs and events at DES. Due to the PTO's projected income, we are working with the administration and DeKalb county on two capital projects.

The first project is fixing the drainage on the existing playground. The second project is sound panels in both the cafeteria and gymnasium. We will keep parents updated on the status of these projects throughout the year.

If you missed the opportunity to pay your PTO Dues, Annual Dues, or Tiger Fund over the summer please visit www.dunwoodypto.com and click on Tiger Fund. Also, if you paid the full $125 Tiger Fund and did not receive your Tiger Fund car magnet, please contact Cassie Odom at cassieodom@gmail.com.

We'd like to thank all of the volunteers that helped with the first week of school. Parents helped walk children to classrooms, assisted with carpool and in the parking lot, set-up for the Welcome Back Coffee and assured our youngest children made it onto the correct bus at dismissal.

We challenge every parent to donate a minimum of 10 hours per semester and log your hours on the PTO website. We are working on a volunteer incentive program based on volunteer hours. Please stay tuned to Tiger Talk for further information.  For additional information on the various PTO committees, visit the PTO website for descriptions and contact information.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions and we look forward to working with you this year.

If your child goes home on the bus, and you are able to follow a Twitter account on your phone, please follow @DESALERTS. The process to sign up and/or receive text messages is simple. We will do our best to notify you when a bus is going to arrive late to your bus stop.

Click the link above, or view this document for the process to sign up.

Please remind your child of his/her carpool or bus number - whatever their means of transportation is at the end of the school day. This will help teachers/staff ensure that your child gets to their car/bus on time.

Please arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria (6:45 - 7:15am)

Program will begin in the media center at 7:20.

This month's topic is "Laughing Together"

All Pro Dad Dad's Day is a simple idea with a profound impact. It's a one-hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria. During this time, we will discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and leave equipped with resources to strengthen your relationship with your child.

The program is fun and free! All you need to do is attend, and if you want to purchase breakfast, you may do so in the cafeteria by using your child's "mylunchmoney" account, cash or check ($1.65 adults, $1.20 children). If you do not have a "mylunchmoney" account, please register for one at www.mylunchmoney.com before the meeting.

To help with keeping the parking lot and carpool drop off running smoothly, please park at GA Perimeter College and walk over to school.
