From Our Principal
Greetings!
We are happily looking forward to Field Days next week! These days are such a wonderful school tradition and the source of great fun for our children. I promise they will sleep well after a day of physical activity!
I am pleased to present two very special announcements that highlight our wonderful school! First, the writing scores for the Grade 5 Writing Assessment have been received by the district. Dunwoody Elementary scored the fourth highest in the district with 97% of students meeting and/or exceeding standards. This is an increase of 4% from last year. Additionally, we have increased the number of students exceeding standards by 8% (21% to 29%) and decreased the number of students not meeting from 7% to 3%. Second, the Director of Science Curriculum for the State of Georgia visited our school with his colleagues. The purpose of the visit was to closely examine the math and science curriculum and instructional practices. At the end of the visit, the Director determined that Dunwoody Elementary is doing an excellent job and is well prepared for an official State STEM certification visit in September. In September, a group of 20-30 experts will visit the school to examine the entire STEM program. They will determine if are able to join the elite group of schools that already have STEM Certification!
In other business, in order for us to run a safe after school program, we need our community to adhere to certain rules. Parents are not allowed to loiter in the building after dismissal. If you have a specific purpose such as a meeting or conference, please sign-in in the front office so that our staff members know that you have been cleared. We also need for you to avoid using the playground or other outside areas if the children enrolled in after school are present. We appreciate your understanding of these rules, which are in place for the safety of our students.
Spring always brings surprising weather as we noted last week, and tornados are just an inevitable possibility. Our students have practiced our emergency procedure for tornado warnings multiple times this year. In the event of a tornado warning, all students exit to the interior portion of the building (hallways) on the lowest floor. Students who are upstairs exit onto the bottom floor as well. Students are quiet and seated in an approved tornado ready position (head covered with arms). Our students and staff members can relocate all students within a few minutes. Hopefully we will not have to have more than a practice drill this year!
Remember to enjoy every minute of your child's last few weeks in their grade. It's tough to think of our fifth graders going to middle school and our kindergartners already ready for first grade. Children grow up in a blink of an eye!

Walk to School
Walk To School is Wednesday, May 7!
Come join the fun and walk or bike to school Wednesday. Prizes are handed out to those that Walk! You may either walk/bike your own route to school or use one of the following places to park your car and walk:
Kingswood United Methodist Church 5015 Tilly Mill Road
Vermack Swim & Tennis Club
4756 Vermack Road
Both of these routes will take approximately 20 minutes. Please note: There will be no volunteer walking leaders from either location.
If you are unable to use one of our meeting points or make the walk from your house, please park in the GPC parking lot next door to the school and walk into the school grounds that way. Please do not park on surrounding residential streets. This creates a safety hazard and restricts access for the residents living on these streets and for emergency vehicles. Dunwoody Police will be monitoring this.
There will be extra pedestrians on the sidewalk in the morning. Remember pedestrians always have the right of way.
We will tally walkers in the classrooms. The classroom with the most walkers will receive the Gold Sneaker Award.
The event will be held rain or shine!
Visit the School Store, open 7:15-7:40am. DES merchandise available to purchase!
Which class will win the Gold Sneaker this time??!!!

School Climate Consultant
Dunwoody Elementary has a wonderful opportunity to work closely with an outside consultant in order to improve and enhance school climate/culture.
The consultant will work individually and in dialogue circles with all teachers. She would also like the opportunity to work with our parents and community. The consultant has scheduled two sessions for community work on May 20th, at 8am and 5:30pm.
A Doodle account has been created to facilitate the sign-up for potential participation. Due to a limited number of seats, the consultant will pull a random sample of "sign-ups" to participate. You will be notified by email if you are selected to participate on May 20th.
If you are unable to access Doodle and would like to sign-up, please notify our front office with your information.
Please sign-up on Doodle by clicking on the following link and going to "Table View":
