From the PTO Co-Presidents
The PTO has received an overwhelming response from the DES staff for the holiday gift we were able to give them, thank you to all families that paid their Annual Dues! Each staff member enjoyed a cash gift just prior to winter break. We wanted the DES Community to know that the staff has sent us a huge message of gratitude and appreciation. We would also like to thank our Staff Appreciation Chairs, Kim Rivera and Terica Harleaux, for organizing the distribution of funds, no small feat!
We had another great Spirit Night at Chick-fil-A last Tuesday. Thank you to all of the DES families that participated, and 3rd grade teachers that served ice cream. We also had great attendance on Friday for All Pro Dad. We have had a great turn-out for all of these events this school year, so please make sure you take advantage of all that Dunwoody Elementary School has to offer.
Please remember that there is NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY, JANUARY 20th, in observance of Martin Luther King's Birthday.
The PTO General Membership Meeting and Nominating Committee Election is on Thursday, January 23rd at 5:00pm in the cafeteria. We are preparing for the 2014-2015 school year by voting, and electing, our 2014-2015 Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee is charged with putting together the slate of PTO Executive Committee officers for next year. If you are interested in serving on the Nominating Committee, please reach out to a PTO Representative on the Executive Committee for more information. Nominations can also be taken from the floor on Thursday evening. Please join us on January 23rd as we elect those individuals.
Our Prospective Parent Night is on Thursday, January 23rd at 6:00pm, immediately following our PTO General Membership meeting. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to get to know our school. Please spread the word about all the wonderful things that are happening at Dunwoody Elementary, and send your friends and neighbors to Prospective Parent Night.
Friday is Pajama Day at DES and you won't want your child to miss it! Our teachers and staff, as well as our students, wear their favorite PJs. Pajama Day is always a fun day, so make sure to get those pajamas and slippers ready to go for Friday! Should your child choose to wear slippers on Friday, please send a change of shoes so they can also enjoy recess and P.E. that day as well. We hope you are enjoying your long weekend, and we look forward to a terrific week,
Amy LeVasseur & Amanda Rountree

School System Flexibility and the DeKalb County School District
The DeKalb County School District has an opportunity to completely change how the district operates, how its schools are governed, and what accountability measures are appropriate.
The district has convened a committee to review these options. Known as the Flexibility Advisory Committee (FAC) it is comprised of parents, community members, school staff, and district office personnel; but, the district would also like to hear from all parents, staff, and community members as well.
For this reason, five community engagement meetings have been scheduled during January, with at least one meeting occurring in each Region. Anyone interested in learning more about these flexibility options and providing input into the decision-making process are encouraged to attend these sessions.

DES Teacher of the Year - Maria Reynolds!
Name: Maria Rivas Reynolds
Position: Health and Physical Education
Years of Experience: 13
- Bachelor of Science...Furman University
- Master of Education... Mercer University
"Make a difference not just in your classroom but in the ENTIRE SCHOOL and COMMUNITY."
Growing up in a family of educators, I learned early on that Teachers must constantly enhance the look and structure of their class. Never being intimidated as an instructor to partake in classes to learn innovative and interesting ideas for my students; allows my class to flourish with endless possibilities each school year. I feel that it is essential to not only educate but inspire all the different young minds at Dunwoody Elementary. Relying on the various types of learning modes, teachers can appeal to each child's reading, thinking, and reasoning skills. Developing a well-rounded student starts with a balanced Health and Physical Education program. My vision is that by providing a variety of topics related to their physical, emotional, and social health students will have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of proper physical activity. Being a Special Area teacher gives me a chance to make a positive impact on EVERY CHILD!
