From the PTO Co-Presidents
What a wonderful week we had rounding out October! From Huntington Learning Center's presentation at our Principal's Coffee, to McGruff the Crime Dog visiting our school for Red Ribbon Week, and finishing out October with pumpkin math, our students had an exciting and fun-filled learning experience!
As we head into November:
REMEMBER to FALL BACK! The time changed on Saturday evening, so if you haven't done so already, please set all of your clocks back one hour!
Brush off those walking shoes, it's that time again! Don't miss Walk to School day this Wednesday, November 6th! The coveted golden shoe award will be up for grabs again this month, so encourage your children to walk and enjoy the beautiful, brisk morning weather.
Last, but certainly not least, we would like to thank all of our volunteers for working so hard over the last few months around our school. We couldn't run all the fabulous programs we offer to our children without our parent volunteers, so thank you again for all you do to make DES a wonderful place to be!
We will see you around school,
Amy LeVasseur & Amanda Rountree

Lost and Found
With cooler weather comes more lost coats and sweaters. Please check the lost and found for your lost items. The lost and found is located next to the Media Center. All unclaimed lost and found items will be donated on Thursday, November 14th.
|
Universal Hearing Screening
During the month of November, the nurse will be performing universal hearing and vision screenings for ALL 3rd graders. If your child does NOT pass, a letter will be sent home to you. You will not receive anything if your child passes both screenings. If you have any questions, you may contact Stephanie Clark, RN at (678) 875-4007.

Send in a Water Bottle for your Child
Remember send in a reusable water bottle that your child can refill throughout the day, especially at lunch time, even if they are buying lunch!
Parent volunteers in the cafeteria are no longer permitted to get children cups of water at lunch. They are now sending children to the water fountain one at a time.

DES Dads, please come to our All Pro Dad Breakfast this month.
Friday, November 15 - 6:45 to 7:45am.
Please arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria (6:45 - 7:15am)
Program will begin in the media center at 7:20.
This month's topic is "Be a Role Model"
All Pro Dad Dad's Day is a simple idea with a profound impact. It's a one-hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria. During this time, we will discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and leave equipped with resources to strengthen your relationship with your child.
The program is fun and free! All you need to do is attend, and if you want to purchase breakfast, you may do so in the cafeteria by using your child's "mylunchmoney" account, cash or check ($1.65 adults, $1.20 children). If you do not have a "mylunchmoney" account, please register for one at www.mylunchmoney.com before the meeting.
To help with keeping the parking lot and carpool drop off running smoothly, please park at GA Perimeter College and walk over to school.
Please visit our chapter website for dates and more information.

Tiger Fund Classroom Challenge
The Classroom Challenge is a contest to see which three classes can boast the highest participation in the Tiger Fund. The winning class will receive a class party at the Sandy Springs Funhouse, including free laser tag (or free play) and PIZZA! Second and third place classes will receive a special "dress up day" at school!
The Tiger Fund goal is 100% participation by all families at DES so no donation is too big or too small! The suggested donation amount is $125 per family. However, every gift counts and we would like 100% participation by all families at DES, at whatever level, great or small, that your family is most comfortable contributing.
The Tiger Fund is the primary fundraiser for the DES PTO. Thanks to our wonderful families we have collected over $37,000 so far, but we need your help to reach our goal of $60,000. Numerous programs and events throughout the year are paid for through the Tiger Fund, including STEM Support, Field Day, Visiting Authors, Cultural Arts Assemblies, Grounds Improvements and much more! Your donations are essential to bringing these important programs to our students at DES!
You may donate online at Tiger Fund Online or drop your donation check in an envelope marked with your student's name and teacher in the PTO mailbox in the school lobby.
The challenge is ON! Who will win?!? DONATE TODAY!

Chess at Dunwoody Elementary
Championship Chess presents a systematic, fun way to build chess skills during chess instruction and while students play. Studies show that chess improves math, reading and problem-solving and our methods connect these academic benefits to our classes. Classes include instruction as well as chess play and guided analysis.
Coach Steve Schneider has been a teacher and chess coach for over 25 years. Championship Chess teams have won local, regional, state and national tournaments. Coaches utilize the Championship Chess curriculum, reinforcing and improving chess skills and strategies in the opening, middle and end game.
