From our Principal
STEM is in full force! Our Global Cardboard Challenge on October 4 was quite a hit, and the students designed very practical tools to improve the work at our school. The next STEM event is November 14 which is a Career Fair. I want to thank all the people who have agreed to assist us on this day by sharing their STEM career with our students.
I want to especially thank those businesses who have agreed to be our official STEM partners! Thanks to...
Dunwoody Urgent Care Forest Investment Associates U.S. Geological Survey
These partners will work closely with the teachers to create relevant STEM lessons for our students that integrate both math and science. Our teachers will be given an instructional day in October so that they can plan these lessons without distraction.
Did you know? As a part of STEM, your child receives Engineering is Elementary curriculum in the STEM lab each week. They also rotate time with Mrs. Mattison in the Lego WeDo lab where they create/build solutions to problems that can become animated with the help of computers. Students also visit the organic gardens on a regular basis to plant and harvest.
Thanks to all the parents, students and teachers involved with Tour de Dunwoody! What a great event for our school! I also enjoyed the Book Fair and Fall Family Dinner on October 10. The food was good, and it was nice to hear the history of Dunwoody from local residents. The Dunwoody Preservation Trust and Dunwoody Homeowner's Association have donated photos to our school which will be displayed by the end of October. All Pro Dads is another special event for Dunwoody Elementary. Thanks to Chris Wilburn and his volunteer efforts to make All Pro Dads a special morning at DES.
On October 29, we will end our Red Ribbon campaign with a special visit from McGruff the Crime Dog. Our students will all see a short program designed to help them, "Say No to Drugs."
Parents, as we wind down the month of October, please remember that students are not allowed to wear costumes to school. Students should not come to school with altered hair color, jewelry, or clothing that would be a distraction to the learning environment. Thanks for your help!

From the PTO Co-Presidents
We have had a busy October already with our Fall Family Dinner Night, Scholastic Book Fair and Tour de Dunwoody. In case you missed it, during the fall family dinner we unveiled three canvases showcasing historical photographs of 115 years of educating Dunwoody children at our Fall Family Dinner. These canvases will be on permanent display on the wall outside of our gymnasium, so please make sure to stop in and take a look. We would like to thank our Historical Committee for two years of planning that made this project possible:
Jennifer Sanders, Lisa Gurin, Shari Wassell, Amy LeVasseur, Robin Burch, Sue Buxton and Warner Maney. We would also like to thank the Dunwoody Homeowner's Association and the Dunwoody Preservation Trust for funding the project.
Our Third Annual Tour de Dunwoody was an overwhelming success this weekend, in no small part due to all of our tireless volunteers! Despite the light rain, we had a terrific turnout with over 250 riders who enjoyed a great morning ride through Dunwoody. Our children enjoyed pre-ride activities on campus, a warm-up demonstration from Karate Atlanta as well as a super-charged warm-up from Coach K and Coach Reynolds! We would like to thank our Tour de Dunwoody Committee Chairs, Katie Scharf, Christine Hilgert and Amy Dyche for all of their hard work behind the scenes. We would also like to thank our VP of Ways and Means, Amy Hatmaker as well as our Community Business Support Team, who played a vital role in making sure that this year's event was a successful one. Thank you to our DES team of volunteers who came out and supported us on Saturday, as well as our team behind the scenes who coordinated this fantastic event.
We would also like to thank all of those individuals and businesses who gave in-kind donations for the day of the event and for donating items for our goodie bags. Custom Signs Today donated a large portion of the signage for our event, GE Industrial Solutions, Inc. sponsored our inflatable slide, and Ali's Cookies donated food for our volunteers. We appreciate all the support DES receives from our local businesses. Please make sure you thank these business owners as well.
We hope you have a terrific week!

Get Your Flu Shots!
As flu season approaches, we need to protect our children by receiving the flu vaccine. Our STEM partner, Dunwoody Urgent Care is offering flu shots this year as they always do, however this year we are doing something a bit different! First of all, they are only charging $20.00 (which is about $10 below most places) and $5 comes back to the school if you mention that you are a DES parent or student. Let's keep our children healthy and in school this winter!
It's a great opportunity to protect yourself and your family from the flu and to give back to the school! Come to the office anytime-no appointment necessary!

Dunwoody Chamblee Parents' Council
DCPC - Last meeting was on Wednesday, October 2nd, 2013 at Huntley Hills Elementary School. We had an informative presentation by Johnathan Clark, DeKalb's new director of research, assessments, and grants. Mr. Clark addressed the different assessments used in DCSD as well as discussed the new state accountability measure, CCRPI. New to our meetings this year are short presentations by one of our DCPC schools. For October, Huntley Hills shared their approach to STEAM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Arts & Math).
The next meeting of the DCPC will be on November 6th, 2013 held here at DES covering the topic of School Choice and featuring Dan Weber.
