From the PTO Co-Presidents
We have some fun and exciting things on the horizon at DES!
IF YOU HAVEN'T REGISTERED for Tour de Dunwoody, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
Tour de Dunwoody, our 3rd Annual Bike Ride is Saturday, October 19th. Your children are all excited about the coveted Golden Helmet Award, for the winning class with the most participants. In addition, this year the winning class will also receive a Grand Prize: a night hike at Dunwoody Nature Center on Friday, November 15. Winners and their families will have an opportunity to spend an evening at the Dunwoody Nature Center, so please encourage your friends and neighbors to register TODAY! You will find more information about this coveted First Place Prize on our PTO website as well as our DES Facebook page.
Brand New Spirit Wear for Cooler Weather! The weather is cooling off, so warm up in our cozy DES fleece jackets and our brand new all weather fleece lined, hooded windbreakers! If you didn't purchase your new Spirit Wear at the Fall Family Dinner, our Spirit Wear chairs will be selling our brand new Spirit Wear at Tour de Dunwoody, so grab your cold weather gear before it flies off the shelves!!!
Directory: Our wonderful DES Directory chairs have been hard at work putting the finishing touches on our school directory for this year. If you missed out on purchasing a directory at Registration/Open House, there is still time! You can purchase a directory by bringing $5 in an envelope with your name, your child's name and homeroom teacher information on the front and place in the PTO mailbox! Deadline is FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18TH! Please email our Directory Chair, Jan Jay with any questions at janjayrd@yahoo.com.
We know we have a lot of new families at DES and some families that did not pay their $35 Annual Dues at Registration/Open House. Annual dues pay for teacher stipends, which help teachers purchase additional supplies for their classrooms, staff gifts for the holidays and end of the year gifts, as well as your child's field day t-shirt. If you have not yet paid your Annual Dues, it's not too late! You may drop your Annual Dues in an envelope into the PTO Mailbox with your name, your child's name and homeroom teacher. You will want to pay this soon, as we will not be collecting this next semester. This is the only opportunity for your child to receive a field day t-shirt, so act fast.
A great big thank you to all of our volunteers who helped with International Walk to School Day! We would also like to thank all of our volunteers who turned out to help with our Scholastic Book Fair and our Fall Family Dinner. All of our events this past week were a great success in no small part due to our dedicated volunteers and families!
Have a fantastic week!

DES Dads, please come to our October All Pro Dad Breakfast.
Friday, October 18 - 6:45 to 7:45am.
Please arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria (6:45 - 7:15am)
Program will begin in the media center at 7:20.
This month's topic is "Sharing"
All Pro Dad Dad's Day is a simple idea with a profound impact. It's a one-hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria. During this time, we will discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and leave equipped with resources to strengthen your relationship with your child.
The program is fun and free! All you need to do is attend, and if you want to purchase breakfast, you may do so in the cafeteria by using your child's "mylunchmoney" account, cash or check ($1.65 adults, $1.20 children). If you do not have a "mylunchmoney" account, please register for one at www.mylunchmoney.com before the meeting.
To help with keeping the parking lot and carpool drop off running smoothly, please park at GA Perimeter College and walk over to school.
Please visit our chapter website for dates and more information.

STEM Event - Visit from Buzz!
STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Students at Dunwoody Elementary celebrate STEM day once a month where students are engaged in problem solving using a design process that allows students to hypothesize, test, and retest prototypes. Students are told that they are engineers on this day. To help celebrate, Buzz, the Georgia Tech mascot came to the school early to greet the students as they arrived. Buzz also participated in the schoolwide WDES broadcast where he assisted in delivering the weather report and helped Mrs. Sanders, the DES Principal, read a STEM-related story. Thanks to Mr. Kevin Watts, DES parent, for "delivering" Buzz to the school, and for helping to organize this event. Everyone had a great time with Buzz!
