Announcements

From the PTO Co-Presidents

Despite all the rain, we hope that you all had a wonderful week at DES!

We had a terrific Saturday celebrating the overwhelming generosity of North Atlanta Church of Christ. They came out with volunteers for a Serve Day to help clean up our grounds and organic gardens.  We had 12 volunteers, including DES parents and church volunteers who worked tirelessly for several hours sprucing up our playground area, organic gardens and general grounds areas.  We want to take a moment to thank North Atlanta Church of Christ for their wonderful gift of service.  What a beautiful way to help our school!

As September comes to a close, we would like to thank all of the volunteers who work with our teachers, students and staff to ensure that Dunwoody Elementary School runs smoothly on a daily basis. Thank you to all of the following volunteer groups who we see around the school: Carpool, Room Parents, Lunch Bunch, Spirit Wear, School Store, Tour de Dunwoody organizers, Mystery Readers and Copy Parents.  The dedication of our parent volunteers is one of the many reasons that DES is such a great place to be!

Calling all Family Events Volunteers! Our Fall Family Dinner Night in conjunction with our Scholastic Book Fair is coming up! Please join us on Thursday, October 10, from 6-8pm.  We need lots of volunteers to help make this event successful. Please email Amanda Rountree (akrtree@gmail.com).  We need volunteers to help with setting up, serving food, and cleaning up.

FALL FAMILY DINNER NIGHT! Our Family Dinner Night information went home in your child's TIP folder on Thursday. Please make sure you complete the registration form and return it no later than Monday, October 7. There will be no dinner purchases on the night of the event, so please make sure to reserve your spot soon! Check out the article below for more information.

Lights, Camera, Smile! Photo Retakes will be on Friday, October 4. If you were not pleased with your child's photographs or if they missed our original picture day, please plan for them to be camera ready for photo retakes.

Have a fantastic week!

From Your Community Business Support Committee

DES IS GRATEFUL FOR OUR PARTNERS!

The Community Business Support Committee has been very busy with fund-raising efforts. In addition to the many generous sponsors who have donated money to support our school, a few local businesses are providing significant in-kind support to kick start our students' year!

Thank you to Kaplan Orthodontics for providing agendas for all of our students to utilize as an effective means of homework organization and parent-teacher communication! Dr. Kaplan, DDS, MS, and his team are dedicated to supporting our school and helping children and adults achieve the smile they deserve.

Thank you to Karate Atlanta for rewarding those DES students who completed the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge with free karate lessons and a uniform! These lessons will help students learn self defense and taekwondo while improving confidence, focus, physical fitness, goal-setting and other skills.

Thank you to Mathnasium for offering an assessment and three-month tutoring program valued at $1,000 to a DES student! All qualifying student names were entered into a drawing.  Congratulations to Heidi Botwinik for winning the scholarship raffle!

For a complete list of the generous sponsors who are supporting our school this year, please check out the right-hand column of this email, or you can visit the Dunwoody PTO website and scroll down the right-hand column of the webpage.

Please consider thanking our fantastic DES Partners in Education by supporting their businesses!

Subway Spirit Day

Visit the Subway located on Ashford Dunwoody Parkway across from Perimeter Mall on Saturday, October 5 from 6am-10pm for DES Spirit Day.

15% of ALL proceeds on this date (not just DES sales) will be given to support our Tour de Dunwoody family friendly bike event.

DES Book Fair Coming Soon!

Dunwoody Elementary's Fall Scholastic Book Fair is Tuesday, October 8 through Thursday, October 10.

We are excited about the Book Fair and all the great activities that surround it. We will be open mornings before school and afternoons after school. And join us during Family Dinner Night on Thursday, October 10th!

Book Fair Hours

Tuesday:  7:00 - 7:30am and 2:30 - 5:00pm

Wednesday: 7:00 -7:30am and 2:30 - 5:00pm

Thursday: 7:00 - 7:30am and 2:30-8:00pm ** Family Night

Book Fair is an excellent opportunity to encourage your children to read with the great selection of books available from Scholastic.  Your child should have received a flyer with book titles and information on the great selection that is available this year.  Proceeds from the Book Fair are used to fund school events, add to classroom libraries and to provide reading instruction for the entire school.

If you can't make it to the Book Fair, you can shop online! You can get an expanded selection of items and orders will be delivered to the school. Check it out at Scholastic.com. All proceeds go to DES.

Book Bucks

Book buck flyers went home in your child's TIP folder this past week.  If you are interested, you can give your teacher "book bucks" to use at the fair.  These monies allow them to buy much needed reading materials for their classroom.  Book bucks can be purchased in $5.00 increments and you may give as many you wish.  If you missed the form, simply send a check or cash, in a sealed envelope marked Book Bucks.  Include your child's name and teacher and place in the PTO mailbox in the front of the school.

Volunteer to help at the Book Fair

We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to work as helpers and cashiers for 1 hour shifts in the morning (Thursday and Friday 7-8am) or 2 hour shifts after-school (between 2:30 and 5pm Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, as well as 6-8pm on Family Night).  Interested?  Please use this link to see the Book Fair Sign Up. Thank you!

Peachtree Charter Middle School (PCMS) 411: Fact or Fiction

Monday, October 7th

10am-11am

PCMS Media Center

Please join us for a Q&A with a Panel of Parents from each feeder school. Principal Heptinstall will open the meeting with a few remarks and then rising 6th Grade Parents will have the opportunity to ask questions of current PCMS parents.

Find out answers to:

How is my child placed academically?

What are the Gifted, High Achiever, and General Teams?

      How is bullying handled?

      What is Accelerated Math?

Is there really band, orchestra, or chorus every day?

When does my child begin foreign language every day?

Can you really earn HS credits in 8th grade?

Come and ask an experienced group of parents your toughest questions and get honest answers.

Tours available immediately following the Q&A.

There will be Rising 6th Grade Parent Information Sessions scheduled in the spring semester.
