Announcements

From the PTO Co-Presidents

Now that our school schedule is settled, we know that many parents are beginning their volunteer positions in the classroom.  Please remember to take the volunteer training online.  This is a mandatory training for all parent volunteers who will work with children within the school system. Please see the Get Involved section below for more details.

At Curriculum Nights, we let you know our plans to use Tiger Fund donation dollars to help fill in the gaps of our STEM curriculum with our Lego Robotics kits as well as the purchase of an iPad cart for our school.  Our Executive Committee unanimously voted to approve the expenditures for these items, which will total more than $22,000.  It's more important than ever to donate to the Tiger Fund!  With this approval, we need additional dollars to continue improvements on our playground. We would like to thank all of our current Tiger Fund donors and encourage families who have not yet participated to join us.  Every dollar makes a difference! View the 2013-2014 PTO Budget here.

Speaking of dollars, a large portion of the $22,000 expenditure goes towards our iPad Mini Cart.  We all know that little hands will be using these devices to assist in the learning process.  We have a wonderful marketing opportunity for any of our parents who wish to advertise!  We could not fund the entire iPad project, so we are offering the opportunity to you, our DES families, to sponsor and/or donate the cases to protect our new school investment.

There are a few other items we are hoping our families will donate.  Our Technology wish list is:

  • 3 Apple TV units ($99 ea.)
  • 30 iPad mini cases ($20 ea. and business logo can be added to all cases)
  • Apps to run on each device ($1,000)
The apps are a necessary piece of the puzzle, and we know that the cases will be needed since our children will be utilizing this equipment during music class and STEM labs.  You might consider donating the price of a single app.  For example, Garage Band is an app that the music department will utilize, and the cost to purchase this for all 30 iPad minis is $75 (a 50% discount for bulk purchase). Jason Seitz, our Technology Committee Chair, is heading up this project.  Please email him at profseitz@gmail.com for additional details and to donate now!

We look forward to using our new equipment and Lego Robotics kits to enhance the learning process here at DES!  We are thrilled that our generous parents have funded these items and we look forward to all the new exciting things our students will do this year!

See you all around school,
Amy LeVasseur & Amanda Rountree

School Council

The DES School Council is an advisory body that provides recommendations to the school principal on matters related to student achievement and school improvement.  We also attempt to strengthen the partnership between parents, teachers, and the community.  Our Council is comprised of 12 individuals consisting of 7 parents, 3 certified teachers, our principal Mrs. Sanders, and one business partner.  All meetings are open to the public and we generally meet monthly.

Our first meeting is Tuesday, September 10th at 3:00pm in the DES Media Center.   We welcome your attendance.

This years' Council includes: Gregory Jay (parent, chair); Celena Apple (parent, vice-chair); Rosemary Watts (parent, secretary); Katie Frame (parent); Kimberly Kirkland (parent); Teri Polk (parent); Jennifer Seitz (parent); Jennifer Sanders (principal); Francine Goodman (teacher); Christine Shelton (teacher); Tami Slaton (teacher); and Jim Redovian (business partner).  Please do not hesitate to contact a member of School Council if you have an area of concern or a suggestion. Members' email addresses are listed under the School Council tab on the school's website.

Chick-fil-A Spirit Night

Come one, come all to our 1st Chick-fil-A Spirit Night for the 2013-14 school year on Tuesday, September 10 from 5pm-8pm at Chick-fil-A Perimeter Pointe.

DES gets credit for all sales from our school community, Dine-In or drive-through, anytime between 5pm and 8pm, so please be sure to mention "DES" at the time of purchase.

Ice cream will be served in the dining hall by staff members of Dunwoody Elementary.

Thank you Chick-fil-A of Perimeter Pointe for your support of DES!

  Picture Day

PICTURE DAY is on Wednesday morning, September 11 for all individual photographs of students and staff!! (Class photos will be taken in February.)

Make sure you get the best pictures possible by dressing your child appropriately. Solid colors in medium to dark tones photograph the best. Try to avoid all white, large patterns or pastel colors which may draw attention to the outfit instead of the child! The proofs and order forms will be returned in your child's TIP folder in the weeks following Picture Day.

Don't forget that the school earns money for each picture that is sold! Please contact Christy Archibald at carchibald@comcast.net with any questions.

DES Dads, please come to our first All Pro Dad Breakfast of the 2013/2014 school year.

Friday, September 13 - 6:45 to 7:45am.

Please arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria (6:45 - 7:15am)

Program will begin in the media center at 7:20.

This month's topic is "Second Chances"

All Pro Dad Dad's Day is a simple idea with a profound impact. It's a one-hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria. During this time, we will discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and leave equipped with resources to strengthen your relationship with your child.

The program is fun and free! All you need to do is attend, and if you want to purchase breakfast, you may do so in the cafeteria by using your child's "mylunchmoney" account, cash or check ($1.65 adults, $1.20 children). If you do not have a "mylunchmoney" account, please register for one at www.mylunchmoney.com before the meeting.

To help with keeping the parking lot and carpool drop off running smoothly, please park at GA Perimeter College and walk over to school.

Please visit our chapter website for dates and more information.

Mandatory Volunteer Training

The State of Georgia Mandatory Reporting Law was revised expanding the listing of persons who are now categorized as mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect. This list now includes anyone who volunteers in a school.

To ensure that all school volunteers are aware of the new responsibilities and penalties associated with non-compliance,
ALL VOLUNTEERS ARE REQUIRED BY LAW to go through a brief training presentation created by DeKalb County Schools on the mandatory reporting of abuse and neglect and what it means to be a mandated reporter.

The training MUST be completed before volunteering. You must also complete the certificate affirming that you have watched the video presentation and understand your obligations as a mandated reporter.  Both the presentation and certificate can be accessed from the school website at http://www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/dunwoodyes
under the "Parent Resources" section.

Volunteers must complete this training every year.

If you have any questions regarding the presentation or your obligations as a reporter, please contact the school's social worker.

Dunwoody Singers Perform National Anthem

The Dunwoody Singers were so excited to be chosen to sing the National Anthem last Friday, August 30, at the Braves vs. Marlins game.  Mrs. Miller, their director, was very impressed with her Singers especially as they only had a couple of weeks to rehearse.  Everyone had a great time and were thrilled to be on the field so close to the players. null
