From the PTO Co-Presidents
We made it through week three! Even with all of the bumps in the road, our students are getting off to a great start! We are grateful for Mrs. Sanders, Mrs. McCoy, and Mrs. Sims for working so diligently to ensure that our students, teachers, and parents got what they needed this week. We all know that sometimes things happen beyond our control, but we will continue to soldier on and be thankful for what a wonderful school our children attend.
Overall, our Curriculum Nights were a success and we want to thank each and every parent that came out to our PTO General Membership Meetings. We passed our 2013-2014 PTO Operating Budget and we will have that information up on our PTO website soon.
We would like to thank all of our parent volunteers who helped at Curriculum Night on Monday and Tuesday. Special thanks also to our Room Parent Coordinators, Ashley Gallagher and Fara Yarbrough for working diligently to make sure all of our classrooms were ready to go, especially considering we moved Curriculum Night up a week. We know that a lot of you did not have a chance to sign up for volunteer opportunities in the classroom. Look for Room Parents to reach out soon to offer you the chance to volunteer.
We would also like to thank our Spirit Wear chairs, Lauren Middlebrooks and Tiffany Paris, for all their hard work leading up to Curriculum Night. Spirit Wear is in hot demand, so we appreciate their diligence to make sure everything was here in time for our DES families!
No School on Monday: There is no school tomorrow, Monday, September 2, in observance of Labor Day.
We look forward to seeing you around school and enjoy your Monday off.
Amy LeVasseur & Amanda Rountree

Walk to School Wednesday
Walk To School is Wednesday, September 4!
Come join the fun as Dunwoody Singers perform! Prizes are handed out to those that Walk!
You may either walk/bike your own route to school or use one of the following places to park your car and walk:

Kingswood United Methodist Church 5015 Tilly Mill Road
Vermack Swim & Tennis Club
4756 Vermack Road
Both of these routes will take approximately 20 minutes. Please note: There will be no volunteer walking leaders from either location.
If you are unable to use one of our meeting points or make the walk from your house, please park in the GPC parking lot next door to the school and walk into the school grounds that way. Please do not park on surrounding residential streets. This creates a safety hazard and restricts access for the residents living on these streets and for emergency vehicles. Dunwoody Police will be monitoring this.
There will be extra pedestrians on the sidewalk in the morning. Remember pedestrians always have the right of way.
We will tally walkers in the classrooms. The classroom with the most walkers will receive the Gold Sneaker Award.
The event will be held rain or shine!
Visit the Student Store, open 7:15-7:40am. DES merchandise available to purchase!
Which class will be the first to win the Gold Sneaker??!!!

Picture Day
PICTURE DAY is on Wednesday morning, September 11 for all individual photographs of students and staff!! (Class photos will be taken in February.)
Make sure you get the best pictures possible by dressing your child appropriately. Solid colors in medium to dark tones photograph the best. Try to avoid all white, large patterns or pastel colors which may draw attention to the outfit instead of the child! The proofs and order forms will be returned in your child's TIP folder in the weeks following Picture Day.
Don't forget that the school earns money for each picture that is sold! Please contact Christy Archibald at carchibald@comcast.net with any questions.

DES Dads, please come to our first All Pro Dad Breakfast of the 2013/2014 school year.
Friday, September 13 - 6:45 to 7:45am.
Please arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria (6:45 - 7:15am)
Program will begin in the media center at 7:20.
This month's topic is "Second Chances"
All Pro Dad Dad's Day is a simple idea with a profound impact. It's a one-hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria. During this time, we will discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and leave equipped with resources to strengthen your relationship with your child.
The program is fun and free! All you need to do is attend, and if you want to purchase breakfast, you may do so in the cafeteria by using your child's "mylunchmoney" account, cash or check ($1.65 adults, $1.20 children). If you do not have a "mylunchmoney" account, please register for one at www.mylunchmoney.com before the meeting.
To help with keeping the parking lot and carpool drop off running smoothly, please park at GA Perimeter College and walk over to school.
Please visit our chapter website for dates and more information.

Collect Box Tops
It's time to turn in your collected Box Tops again! Please clip the Box Tops label from designated products, put them in a Ziploc bag with your child's name, class, and the number of Box Tops written on the bag. Turn them in to the schoolhouse in the entryway of the school that says, "Box Tops" on the roof. Each label is worth $0.10 to our school!
Last year, we raised over $2000 from this project, so tell your neighbors and relatives to join you, and get clipping to support this effort to raise money for DES! Money earned goes to help fund teacher continuing education, grounds improvements, the STEM initiative, and Field Day! For every 50 box tops that are turned in, the child's name will be entered in a drawing to be eligible to win a prize! Please contact Megan Cann ( megancann00@hotmail.com) with any questions. Thanks!

Mandatory Volunteer Training
The State of Georgia Mandatory Reporting Law was revised expanding the listing of persons who are now categorized as mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect. This list now includes anyone who volunteers in a school. To ensure that all school volunteers are aware of the new responsibilities and penalties associated with non-compliance, ALL VOLUNTEERS ARE REQUIRED BY LAW to go through a brief training presentation created by DeKalb County Schools on the mandatory reporting of abuse and neglect and what it means to be a mandated reporter. The training MUST be completed before volunteering. You must also complete the certificate affirming that you have watched the video presentation and understand your obligations as a mandated reporter. Both the presentation and certificate can be accessed from the school website at http://www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/dunwoodyes under the "Parent Resources" section.
Volunteers must complete this training every year.
If you have any questions regarding the presentation or your obligations as a reporter, please contact the school's social worker. School Social Worker - Isaura Roque Phone: 678-676-7135
