From our Principal
Parents,
As hard as I try to keep information confidential until I have all the details in place, I'm sure that you are hearing rumors that DeKalb County is making adjustments in schools based on enrollment. Dunwoody Elementary currently has fewer students enrolled than last year, which means we will have staff adjustments. I am doing all that I can to keep all of our wonderful Dunwoody Teachers in place while I know there are schools that have been waiting for teachers since the first day of school. As I work toward creative solutions that minimize the impact to our students, I would appreciate your patience. I will send letters to your grade level as needed by the beginning of the week.

From the PTO Co-Presidents
We are getting into the swing of things now! Thank you to all of our wonderful parents for your patience as we work out all the little kinks in our dismissal process. We also want to thank our fabulous front office staff for working so hard to make sure that children get to the right place and for communicating last minute changes to our teachers and staff. As the year progresses, we will have everything running like clock work.
PTO GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING (5:30pm)/CURRICULUM NIGHT (6:00pm):
Please join us tomorrow, August 26th (Pre-K through 2nd grades) or Tuesday, August 27th (3rd-5th grades) for our PTO General Membership meeting at 5:30pm. We will approve our PTO Operating Budget for 2013-2014 and will give you important updates about our Tiger Fund! You won't want to miss this brief meeting prior to Curriculum Night!
Log your hours:
Let us know when you volunteer! We want to know when you volunteer so that we can reward you. Please go onto our PTO website at dunwoodypto.com and click on "Log Volunteer Hours" under the Parent Resources section on the left side of the page. It is really that easy!
Volunteer Parking:
We know that our volunteers are constantly coming and going, but we know it's more difficult to come and go during morning and afternoon carpool. For this reason, we ask that all volunteers park in the east parking lot so that you can easily come and go, even during peak traffic times.
Last but certainly not least, we would like to take a moment and thank our wonderful Hospitality Chair, Tessa Pickren for doing such an amazing job with our Principal's Coffee. We would also like to thank Ali's Cookies for donating our wonderful muffin tray and cookie cake.
See you around school,
Amy LeVasseur & Amanda Rountree
PTO Co-Presidents

Mandatory Volunteer Training
The State of Georgia Mandatory Reporting Law was revised expanding the listing of persons who are now categorized as mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect. This list now includes anyone who volunteers in a school. To ensure that all school volunteers are aware of the new responsibilities and penalties associated with non-compliance, ALL VOLUNTEERS ARE REQUIRED BY LAW to go through a brief training presentation created by DeKalb County Schools on the mandatory reporting of abuse and neglect and what it means to be a mandated reporter. The training MUST be completed before volunteering. You must also complete the certificate affirming that you have watched the video presentation and understand your obligations as a mandated reporter. Both the presentation and certificate can be accessed from the school website at http://www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/dunwoodyes under the "Parent Resources" section.
Volunteers must complete this training every year.
If you have any questions regarding the presentation or your obligations as a reporter, please contact the school's social worker. School Social Worker - Isaura Roque Phone: 678-676-7135

Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Club Meeting Dates Changed
We are looking for 4th and 5th grade students who love to read! The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl (HRRB) is a fun, quiz-bowl type competition, where students strive to correctly answer questions about the current year's Georgia Book Award nominees faster than the opposing teams. Ms. Gurin will sponsor an after-school club based on the Bowl for 4th and 5th graders. Members will read and discuss the nominated books. Due to Dunwoody Singers meeting on Tuesdays, Reading Bowl meetings have been changed to Mondays, to allow more students to participate in both activities. The updated meeting dates can be found under clubs and activities on the DES website. Ten reading bowl club members will be selected to represent Dunwoody Elementary at the HRRB on January 25th, 2014.
There is a sign-up sheet located in the Media Center. Please visit the DES webpage for information and guidelines:

Collect Box Tops
It's time to turn in your collected Box Tops again! Please clip the Box Tops label from designated products, put them in a Ziploc bag with your child's name, class, and the number of Box Tops written on the bag. Turn them in to the schoolhouse in the entryway of the school that says, "Box Tops" on the roof. Each label is worth $0.10 to our school!
Last year, we raised over $2000 from this project, so tell your neighbors and relatives to join you, and get clipping to support this effort to raise money for DES! Money earned goes to help fund teacher continuing education, grounds improvements, the STEM initiative, and Field Day! For every 50 box tops that are turned in, the child's name will be entered in a drawing to be eligible to win a prize! Please contact Megan Cann ( megancann00@hotmail.com) with any questions. Thanks!
