From our Principal
Parents and Community,
The first week of school has been a glowing success! The success is largely attributed to our parent community following school procedures, volunteers lending helping hands, teachers being prepared, and students having wonderful attitudes! I think we only had two minor hiccups on the first day.
The first occurred when the fire alarm was accidentally pulled, and we had a spontaneous introduction to building evacuation. The children and teachers handled the incident like veterans! The teachers had a teachable moment, and we checked off one of our required fire drills for the month of August. The other hiccup occurred at dismissal. We proceeded slowly with dismissal to make sure all students were safely on their way home, and the result was a much longer process than normal. By Tuesday, though, we were back on track and letting buses roll at a reasonable time. I appreciate how patient all parents were on the first day whether waiting in carpool or at the bus stop. I have met in an assembly with all students in grades 1-5 to review school expectations and talk about exciting school events. Students are particularly excited about our new STEM process, and a letter was sent home in T.I.P. last week with more details. I am currently looking for business partners so that we can proceed with our certification process. We need to partner with companies and/or schools in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering or Math. Partners will need to work throughout the year with our students and teachers by sharing ideas, lessons, and career information. If you know of a potential partner, please contact me with the company name and contact. Please send information to Jennifer_P_Sanders@fc.dekalb.k12.ga.us. Students are also asked to continue with their Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge until Labor Day. Students who complete their logs and turn them into the teacher will be eligible for a reward and a chance to receive a grand prize. Please assist your children in their endeavor to read each night. Children were told that in order to continue learning, they must continue reading. They should practice reading like they would practice football, piano, or chess. I have great expectations for a great school year, and I'm excited about all the possibilities. Thank you for allowing us to look after your precious children! Jennifer P. From the PTO Co-Presidents
We had a wonderful first week of school at DES! Students, thank you for bringing excitement and smiles back to school. Parents, thank you for your patience. Volunteers, thank you for your countless hours. Faculty and staff, thank you for all your hard work!
With the first week of school under our belts, we wanted to touch on a few points regarding safety and carpool.
Please refrain from using your cell phones in the carpool line. We have so many children entering the building during carpool and we want to ensure the safety of each and every one of our students.
NO LEFT TURN AFTER 7:30AM FROM THE EAST ENTRANCE. If you choose to enter the east carpool line after 7:30am, please do not turn left onto Womack Road. This will be a right turn only after 7:30am. If you wish to go left on Womack Road, you MUST utilize the west entrance/exit where our crossing guard is present. Signage will be posted immediately as a friendly reminder. We will request Dunwoody Police to help enforce this rule if necessary.
YOUR CHILD IS TARDY AT 7:40AM. The tardy bell rings at 7:40am. If you are utilizing the carpool line and your child is not inside the building by 7:40am, they are considered tardy and must be signed in by a parent or guardian.
Have questions about Dunwoody Elementary? The Principal's Coffee is a perfect place to get those questions answered. Please join us for the first Principal's Coffee of the year on Tuesday, August 20, from 7:45am - 9:00am. Mrs. Sanders will be there to answer questions and address any concerns you may have, and it will give you an opportunity to enjoy coffee and refreshments with other parents.
See you around the school,
Amy LeVasseur and Amanda Rountree
PTO Co-Presidents
