From our Principal
Dunwoody Parents,
The first day of school is an exciting time, but it is a hectic time. It is important that you plan to leave home a little earlier than usual because there will be longer lines and more traffic than usual. Please, please help us keep your precious little one safe by adhering to the following procedures:
1. Only park your car in a designated parking space, and only cross traffic at designated pedestrian crossings. Make sure you ALWAYS hold your child's hand! If a parking space is not available, you will need to utilize the lower parking lot at GA Perimeter College and walk to the school.
2. We encourage you to utilize the carpool line after the first week of school. The parking lot is not a safe place for children. Our volunteers will ask that you not walk your child into the building unless you have an appointment with a teacher. We encourage our children to be independent, and by the second week of school, they can all find their classrooms. Letting your little children spread their wings is hard, but remember it's what we desire for them. We have plenty of teachers and staff members to help any child who may have difficulties.
3. We encourage you to not eat lunch with your children until after Labor Day. The handbook says two weeks, but Labor Day is a better target. We need to establish routines and procedures in the cafeteria that allow for us to keep children safe with regard to choking, food allergies, and social interactions.
4. Absolutely no going to the classrooms after 7:40am! The students must begin their instructional day at 7:45am, and it is critical that you abide by this policy. If you are on the hallway at 7:40am, you must exit with the ringing of the bell.
5. Buses may run late in the afternoons during the first week of school. Please be patient. We generally load the buses much slower during the first week of school to make sure every student is on the correct bus. The process takes awhile, and so, your bus may arrive home later than typically expected.
6. If your child has any special issues, please make sure to contact the teacher via email within the first weeks of school to schedule a time to meet. Any information you provide is helpful toward our providing the best service possible.
Thank you for helping us have a great, safe start to our year!

From the PTO Co-Presidents
As we come off of a very busy week of school preparation, we would like to take a moment to thank our wonderful parent volunteers who came out last week to help us have another successful Registration Day/Open House. We would especially like to thank Kris Mamaghani, our Registration/Open House Committee Chair, who worked tirelessly all week. We would also like to thank Celena Apple, last year's Registration/Open House chair for all of her support. A big thank you to all of our committees who had a presence at registration along with the many parent volunteers who helped make everything run smoothly. Last but not least, we would like to thank Mr. Frank Brake and all of our custodial staff for working all summer to ensure our school is in tip top shape for tomorrow morning.
As we all prepare to send our children back to school tomorrow, we thought we would take a moment to give you a few reminders about Dunwoody Elementary School's Transportation Safety:
- Arriving early during the first week of school is always a good idea! Traffic will be thick, so plan on leaving home earlier than normal to accommodate for any delays you may encounter. You may drop your children off as early as 7:00am. The tardy bell will ring at 7:40am.
- There will be NO LEFT TURN from the east exit after 7:30am due to safety concerns. If you wish to turn left onto Womack Road after 7:30am, we ask that you exit on the west side of the parking lot where our crossing guard is present.
- For your safety and for the safety of those children who will be entering the building in the morning and exiting in the afternoon, we ask that you remain off of your cell phone any time you are in the carpool line. Carpool should be a distraction free zone for everyone.
- We understand that it will be a big transition for some students and parents during the first week of school and we welcome you to walk your child into school to help them get acclimated to their new classrooms and the building. After the first week, parents who have appointments in the building are more than welcome to park in a parking space and come into the building before 7:40am. We ask that everyone else please utilize the carpool lane and follow our transportation guidelines.
We will have a Welcome Back Coffee open to all parents on Monday, August 12, from 7:45-8:15am in the Media Center. This is a great opportunity to get more information about our school, sign-up for volunteer opportunities and meet other parents for a little social time before you start your day. We will also have a PTO table set up in the front hallway. We will have agendas, carpool numbers, Tour de Dunwoody and Tiger Fund information, as well as registration packets for new students.
As we begin another school year, we are again reminded about how fortunate we are to have wonderful teachers, staff, and volunteers here at DES! We look forward to seeing you all bright and early on Monday morning.
See you around the school,
Amy LeVasseur and Amanda Rountree

From the Transportation Committee
Parents, for safety reasons, we are now enforcing a "no left turn" rule after 7:30 am from the east exit of our parking lot. If you are utilizing the carpool line and you wish to turn left onto Womack Road after 7:30am, we ask that you exit to the west side of the parking lot where our crossing guard directs traffic. A new traffic map was included in the registration packet you should have received on August 7th. This packet outlines the new traffic flow for carpool and our transportation guidelines. We believe that this is the best course of action to keep our students and families safe.
