From the PTO Co-Presidents
Well, the end of school is upon us, but there are still plenty of events and adventures to be had by our students in May. Our 2nd Annual SLAM poetry week begins Monday for our 5th graders. This event is hosted by our Cultural Arts Committee Chair, Terri Polk. Terri has single handedly coordinated all of our Cultural Arts events this year, so we are grateful for all her hard work.
Teacher Appreciation week also kicks off on Monday and we will be celebrating and honoring our teachers and staff all week with special lunches, treats and giveaways! We are thankful for each and every one of our teachers and staff here at DES! Don't forget to tell them this week how wonderful they are!
Our last All Pro Dads' breakfast will be on Friday beginning at 6:45am. Thank you to all of the parents who have attended this year with their children! A great big thank you again to Robert Apple for chairing these events.
HONORS DAY: We will have our Honors Day program for grades 3-5 on Wednesday, May 15th in the cafeteria. The schedule is as follows: 8:15-9:15am - 3rd grade 9:35-10:35am - 4th grade 10:55-11:55am - 5th grade Also, as we discussed at our last Principal's Coffee, the Confidential Placement form is available on our school website. The form is to be returned to the box in the office ONLY - no emails or conferences. The School/Teacher Feedback form is also located on the website. Teacher Appreciation Week
DES Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6-10. It is a great opportunity to show your teachers just how much you appreciate them! The PTO will provide delicious treats and surprises throughout the week, but not much can beat a sweet thank you from their very own students. On Wednesday, May 8th, all students are asked to bring in a card for their teachers to let them know just how special they are. We are also inviting students to bring in a small treat for their teachers such as a piece of fruit, an individual baked good, or another small token that their teacher would enjoy. A room parent will be at the classroom doors that morning to collect the cards and goodies and will present them to the teachers. And don't forget about the specials teachers too! There will be baskets at the front of the school where you can drop off cards for them as well. |

DES Dads, did you miss the All Pro Dad Breakfast
last month?
If you answered yes, don't worry. Come to this month's meeting!
Friday, April 10 - 6:45 to 7:45am
Please arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria (6:45 - 7:15am)
Program will begin in the media center at 7:20.
This month's topic is "Growing Up"
All Pro Dad Dad's Day is a simple idea with a profound impact. It's a one-hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria. During this time, we will discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and leave equipped with resources to strengthen your relationship with your child.
The program is fun and free! All you need to do is attend, and if you want to purchase breakfast, you may do so in the cafeteria by using your child's "mylunchmoney" account, cash or check ($1.50 adults, $1.15 children). If you do not have a "mylunchmoney" account, please register for one at www.mylunchmoney.com before the meeting.
To help with keeping the parking lot and carpool drop off running smoothly, please park at GA Perimeter College and walk over to school.
Please visit our chapter website for dates and more information.

Science Olympiad Team Brings Home Medals
Winning two golds and a bronze, Dunwoody Elementary School's science team finished strong during the 2013 DeKalb County Elementary Science Olympiad on April 27. Fourteen DES students in grades 3-5 participated in the yearly event, sponsored by Fernbank Science Center, in which teams from 27 schools gathered at Druid Hills Middle School. DES team members competed in 20 of the 28 categories ranging from on-site "builds" to model races and demonstrations of knowledge. A solid one third of our students came home with medals.
The team consisted of Priya Abiram, Adyasha Aruk, Reuben Covey, Filippo Di Benedetto, Max Erfani, Ian Hopkins, Spencer Hopkins, Will Frame, Austin Kirkley, Matthew Kotzbaur, Charlie Martinez, Nic Poole, Erik Wang and Cameron Weeks. The team was led by guest coach Karen Baker, parent coordinator Dee Dee Martinez and teacher sponsor Jeannette Beck.
Ian and Spencer Hopkins dazzled in their maiden Olympiad with a first place win in Circuit Wizardry. Adyasha Aruk topped her silver performance last year with a gold in Starry, Starry Night. Filippo Di Benedetto and Erik Wang teamed up to place third in Rock Hound.
Congratulations to all members of the DES team and their families as they look forward to future events.

Girls on the Run
Congratulations to the first ever DES Girls on the Run teams! They recently ended the season with a culminating 5K race that was held in Atlanta on Saturday, April 27th. The weather was great and the excitement and enthusiasm of the girls permeated the air!
During the 12 week session, the girls participated in discussions and activities that helped them learn about developing a positive self image, leading active lives and demonstrating respect for others. The girls also learned the importance of "stopping the gossip web" and how to take a stand against bullying. Each team also participated in a community project. The girls chose to create cards to be sent to the victims in Boston and to help beautify the DES school grounds. What a wonderful way to show school pride and compassion for others!
A big thank you to the coaches and parents for your dedication and unwavering support of the girls and the program. Without you, it would not have been such a success! We are so proud of the GOTR girls and cannot wait to do it again in the Fall!
Dates to remember: 8/14 - GOTR registration begins at 9:00 online:
