From the PTO Co-Presidents
Welcome back parents! We hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Spring Break this week. We are ready to hit the ground running this week beginning with the CRCT on Tuesday. Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will be testing through Thursday this week and Tuesday and Wednesday next week.
Your children have done everything they can to prepare for these tests academically. We simply ask that you ensure your children get plenty of rest and eat a hearty breakfast this week so that they are not only mentally but physically prepared for their tests. Friday, our All Pro Dad program will begin at 6:45am. This is a terrific time for children and their dads to spend time together and enjoy breakfast. Thank you again to Robert Apple for continuing to support and coordinate these meetings throughout the year.
Illustrator Michael White will be back on Friday to dazzle our students! This will be a wonderful break from CRCT testing!
Have a great week,
Amy LeVasseur & Shari Wassell

School Council Meeting
School Council will be meeting this Tuesday, April 16, at 3pm in the Media Center. On the agenda will be a discussion of the 'Letter of Intent' regarding the possible formation of a charter system for the Dunwoody cluster of schools. All members of the DES community are invited to attend. |
DES Dads, did you miss the All Pro Dad Breakfast
last month?
If you answered yes, don't worry. Come to this month's meeting!
Friday, April 19 - 6:45 to 7:45am.
Please arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria (6:45 - 7:15am)
Program will begin in the media center at 7:20.
This month's topic is:
"Using Technology to Connect with Your Kids"
All Pro Dad Dad's Day is a simple idea with a profound impact. It's a one-hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria. During this time, we will discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and leave equipped with resources to strengthen your relationship with your child.
The program is fun and free! All you need to do is attend, and if you want to purchase breakfast, you may do so in the cafeteria by using your child's "mylunchmoney" account, cash or check ($1.50 adults, $1.15 children). If you do not have a "mylunchmoney" account, please register for one at www.mylunchmoney.com before the meeting.
To help with keeping the parking lot and carpool drop off running smoothly, please park at GA Perimeter College and walk over to school.
Please visit our chapter website for dates and more information.

Earth Week Recycling Drive
Monday, April 22 is Earth Day!
To celebrate, the Recycling and Environment Committee will be sponsoring a 3-Day Recycling Drive April 22 through 24. We will meet you in carpool line at drop off and at pick up to collect your recyclables. Your child may also bring a bag on the school bus and we can get it from them as they arrive at school.
Gather your old paired shoes, batteries, cell phones, eye glasses and printer cartridges/toners and we will recycle them for you. Start your spring cleaning and teach your kids the importance of recycling items that can be disposed of in an environmentally-friendly way.
If you have any questions or can volunteer some time, please contact Jan Jay at [email protected]. |

Dunwoody Elementary Battery Recycling
Did you know that DES has its very own recycling station? It is located inside the school's main hall, on the right side, next to the gym door. To further our recycling efforts, we have included batteries in our recycling program. To date, for the 2012-1013 school year, the Batteries Plus store located at 418 Roswell Road, has recycled 53 lbs. of batteries for the DES Recycling program. The store manager, John Cyphers, and his team have been completely supportive of our program and have even waived the $1.00 per pound charge for recycled batteries from our school. Drop in and say hello to John, and do some shopping; or visit them online at www.batteriesplus.com. Thank you very much, Batteries Plus, America's Battery Experts, for caring about our world and helping us set a great example for our kids. |
Chairs 4 Charity
Before you clear out your house for spring cleaning, consider donating any small tables or chairs to the art room! Mrs. Fleury-Bell & her photography club are looking for gently used chairs and small tables to paint for the 4th annual Chairs 4 Charity. The Chairs 4 Charity booth is sponsored by the Dunwoody Rotary Club. The chairs will be auctioned off at the Dunwoody Arts Festival, in the heart of Dunwoody on May 11th & 12th, 2013. Students in the photography club will paint these chairs and 100% of the proceeds are donated back to the art room at DES. Wood, plastic and metal chairs are preferred, but we're artists so we can be creative with anything! Thank you! |

2nd Grade Flat Stanley Projects
Second grade students at Dunwoody Elementary School proudly display their original Flat Stanley Projects. The Project provides an opportunity for students to make connections with students of other member schools who have signed up with the project. Students begin by reading the book Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown and becoming acquainted with the story. They then create paper "Flat Stanleys" (representative drawings of the Stanley Lambchop character) and keep a journal for a few days, documenting the places and activities in which Flat Stanley is involved. Each student's Flat Stanley and its respective journal are mailed to other people who are asked to treat the figure as a visiting guest and add to his journal, then return them both after a period of time.
The Flat Stanley Project was started in 1995 by Dale Hubert, a third grade schoolteacher in London, Ontario, and Canada. It is meant to facilitate letter-writing by schoolchildren to each other as they document where Flat Stanley has accompanied them. Dale Hubert received the Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence in 2001 for the Flat Stanley Project. Students find it fun to plot Flat Stanley's travels on maps and share the contents of the journal. Often, a Flat Stanley returns with a photo or postcard from his visit. Some teachers prefer to use e-mail for its quicker travel time. In 2005, more than 6,500 classes from 48 countries took part in the Flat Stanley Project (historical background taken from Wikipedia). Sponsoring teachers at Dunwoody: Elaine Mach, Avis Holbrook, Mary Margaret Warshaw, Bonnie Birrell, Elizabeth Bass, Charlotte Davis, and Tami Slaton. Parent volunteers also assisted with the project. The Flat Stanleys will be mailed all over the country.
