From the PTO Co-Presidents
ATTENTION ALL CARPOOL PARENTS: YOU ENDANGER THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILD AND OTHERS WHEN YOU DO NOT FOLLOW CARPOOL GUIDELINES
As we are all aware, we have very dedicated volunteers who help around our school to keep our students safe. Every morning, we have the same diligent volunteers that help with carpool. These volunteers and coordinators, along with the administrators of our beloved school, have posted a set of guidelines and rules pertaining to carpool in the mornings so that we can ensure the safety of each precious student as they enter the building.
As a parent who uses carpool in the morning, I certainly appreciate all the precautions our volunteers take to ensure everything runs smoothly in the morning. This cannot happen if parents continue to break the rules that have been made to ensure safety and protocol. There can be absolutely no parking and walking your child into the building prior to 7:45am unless you have a pre-set appointment with a teacher, counselor or administrator. You may not park your car in the middle of the parking lot and leave it there for other cars to have to maneuver around so that you can walk your child into class. It is a hazard for anyone to park behind another car due to insufficient parking and block someone else in. There was a severe traffic jam last Tuesday due to an illegally parked car that jammed up traffic for more than 10 minutes because no one could pull in or out of the parking lot. There were parents allowing their children to jump out of their car in the middle of the parking lot to run into the school, barely being missed by oncoming vehicles.
Since safety is our number one concern, we must ensure that all parents are abiding by the rules and regulations set forth by the school. You may drop your child off as early as 7:00am in order to avoid the heavy traffic. Please remember that your child is considered late at 7:45am, so please make sure to allow plenty of time in the morning and arrive at school prior to 7:40am. Your cooperation is appreciated and we hope that you will understand that these guidelines will only help our students if all parents follow them. |

DES STEM Night
Thursday, February 28, 2013, 6pm-8pm
Parents and children are invited to learn more about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) at the annual Dunwoody Elementary School STEM night. Whether it's controlling computers with a glance, space exploration, or searching for the cure for cancer, the creativity of science and technology will continue to spur the growth of the economy and catalyze the overall improvement of human life.
During this event, parents can learn more about programs designed to expose children to STEM fields and facilitate advanced preparation in these disciplines. Additionally, children will have the opportunity to participate in the many fun and fascinating science experiments and demonstrations that will be available. DES Jump Rope for Heart
Dunwoody Elementary School students will JUMP FOR THEIR HEARTS AND HELP SAVE LIVES. Students at elementary schools are jumping at the chance to fight heart disease and stroke, our nation's No. 1 and No. 3 killers.
Starting on Thursday, January 24th - Friday, February 22nd DES will try to raise money for the American Heart Association, which funds lifesaving heart and stroke research.
Jump Rope for Heart teaches students how physical fitness benefits the heart and shows them that volunteering can be a fun and positive experience for the whole community. The need to educate children about the importance of physical activity couldn't be more necessary! Money is NOT required in order to participate in the program; however, any money given will help and is appreciated. Please note: we ask that children not go door-to-door or ask strangers for donations. You can make donations online at www.heart.org. Our school goal is $20,000.00, so please help in any way.
Jump Rope for Heart is co-sponsored by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Please help our students help others by making a donation. If you would like to help, call 1-800-AHA-USA1 (1-800-242-8721). You can also visit them online at www.heart.org/jump.
Thank you for helping people in our community fight America's #1 and #3 killers - heart disease and stroke!

Roy Nitzan & Itai Shefler, 5th grade students at Dunwoody Elementary, were selected by art teacher, Laura Fleury-Bell to participate in this wonderful event. This was the opening exhibit for Youth Art Month in March. There was a reception held at the Floyd Twin Towers building, across from the State Capital, on Wednesday, February 13, 2013. Mrs. Fleury-Bell, Roy, Itai, and their families attended the exhibition & were amazed by all the incredible student artwork! They were even lucky enough to meet Fran Millar, the state senate representative from Dunwoody!
