From the PTO Co-Presidents
As we enter the second semester, consider volunteering your time and talents. We have many volunteer opportunities throughout the school and it's a great way to get involved! Keep in mind, all those parents you see around the school are helping in some capacity. At carpool in the morning, during lunch in the cafeteria or in the front office. We have a place for you! We could not give your children all of the special programs and activities without our volunteers, so please consider giving your time. We are still asking for 10+ hours for all parents. Those that have already acquired these, will get stars on their puzzle piece for each additional 10 hours. These will equate to raffle tickets for a drawing at the end of the school year.
Calling all snow bunnies and shredders! There will be a final ski trip on January 26th to North Carolina. We always encourage parents and siblings to join the fun, so don't miss out on a great family trip! Please remember Kindergarten through Third grade children must be accompanied by a parent. Fourth and Fifth grade students may attend without a parent. Space is limited so please see Mrs. Mattison's website for sign-up information. Questions? [email protected]
Next week we have our Principal's Coffee on Tuesday, January 15th from 7:45-8:45am. We encourage all parents to attend and hope to see you before you head off to start your day. Chick-Fil-A Spirit Night is also Tuesday, January 15th from 5:45-8:00pm. A portion of all the profits from Spirit Nights go back to the school, so skip the cooking and enjoy a night out with your family. Make sure to mention you are with Dunwoody Elementary School. Our Prospective Parent Night is on Thursday, January 17th at 6:30pm in the cafeteria. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to get to know our school. Please spread the word about all the wonderful things that are happening at Dunwoody Elementary and send your friends and neighbors to Prospective Parent Night. Last but not least our All Pro Dads will meet next Friday, January 18th at 6:45am. We have had a great turn out for these events, so please make sure you take advantage of all that Dunwoody Elementary School has to offer.

THANK YOU from the Tiger Fund
Thank you to everyone who has donated to the Tiger Fund. We have raised almost $50,000 but unfortunately we have fallen short of covering the PTO operating budget as well as raising any additional funds to put toward capital improvements for the school. Your donations are crucial to bringing fun and educational programs to DES and we do not want to have to take any of these programs away from our children. We still have not gained 100% participation from every DES family so if you haven't yet donated or would like to make an additional donation, please consider donating today! You may also Give Online.
If you have already given to the Tiger Fund, we truly appreciate your donation and you will be receiving a Thank You letter in your child's TIP folder. Please use this as your tax receipt as it includes the DES PTO's Tax ID number.
Finally, many companies will match donated funds and this is a great way to make your donation even more powerful! Below is a partial list of many companies that have been known to make matching gifts. If you would like to apply for a corporate match or need to know if your company matches donations, contact an HR representative at your company.

Principal's Coffee
Tuesday, January 15th from 7:45-8:45am
The Principal's Coffee is always a great time for parents to learn more about what our wonderful school has to offer. It is also a perfect time to ask our Principal any questions or concerns you may have about the topic of the day. Since ITBS and CogAT scores have been sent home, Ms. Sanders will talk about how to interpret your child's test scores and how to qualify for the gifted program. One of our Discovery teachers, Nancy Obenschain, will present the guidelines for the Gifted eligibility process. Please join us Tuesday morning right after carpool! |

DeKalb County to Hold Public Informational Meeting
January 16, 2013
Dunwoody High School
6:30 to 8pm
Every five years, school districts across the state submit a list of schools to participate in the state capital outlay program. The DeKalb County School District is completing an application for funding that requires a list of its schools and shows that the DeKalb County "Proposed School Organization" meets the state requirements. It is not a redistricting plan.
In January, DCSD planning staff will revise its briefing to focus the community's understanding on DeKalb's list of schools and minimize any discussion of boundary changes. This list of schools will incorporate the new schools added under the SPLOST IV capital program.
The staff briefing in January will clarify that a list of schools is all that is needed to begin the state application process. The list of schools does not require any information about boundary lines. Consequently, the proposed school organization is not a redistricting plan but a list of school facilities the district expects to operate in the out years. This list is used to determine the state's award for capital project funding.
The meeting with the DCSD on January 16 will discuss this application process and the school district's submission. Please plan to attend. |
DES Dad's, did you miss the All Pro Dad Breakfast
last month?
If you answered yes, don't worry. Come to this month's meeting!
Friday, January 18 - 6:45 to 7:45am.
Please arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria (6:45 - 7:15am)
Program will begin in the media center at 7:20.
This month's topic is "The Value of Hard Work"
All Pro Dad Dad's Day is a simple idea with a profound impact. It's a one-hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria. During this time, we will discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and leave equipped with resources to strengthen your relationship with your child.
The program is fun and free! All you need to do is attend, and if you want to purchase breakfast, you may do so in the cafeteria by using your child's "mylunchmoney" account, cash or check ($1.50 adults, $1.15 children). If you do not have a "mylunchmoney" account, please register for one at www.mylunchmoney.com before the meeting.
To help with keeping the parking lot and carpool drop off running smoothly, please park at GA Perimeter College and walk over to school.
Please visit our chapter website for dates and more information.

2013-2014 PTO Officers Nominating Committee
The time has come to choose our PTO Officers for the next school year. At a very brief PTO meeting in the cafeteria on Thursday, January 31 at 5pm, we will take names of those PTO members wishing to serve on the Nominating Committee. This committee will create a slate of officers for the PTO Executive Committee for 2013-2014. Any member of the PTO who is in good standing and has paid their dues can take part in this process by suggesting someone to serve on the Nominating Committee or volunteering him/herself to serve. We will vote on 7 members and 1 alternate for the committee. Please take time and consider serving or nominating another PTO member to serve in this very important role. |
Volunteer Opportunity
Looking for a way to get involved in school a few hours a month? Come help out in the Media Center. Our primary role is to help Ms. Gurin, the media specialist, with the re-shelving of books. Due to DeKalb County budget cuts, she no longer has an assistant this year, so our help is vital to keeping the media center running smoothly. She needs help for 1 hour each day. Typically, you will help from 11:30 AM- 12:30 PM, but we can be flexible with the time.
Please visit our Sign Up Genius site: http://www.SignUpGenius.com/go/409094EACAC29A13-daily or contact Jill Rosen at [email protected]
Remember, we are still asking for 10+ hours for all parents. Those that have already acquired these, will get stars on their puzzle piece for each additional 10 hours. These will equate to raffle tickets for a drawing at the end of the school year. |
Merchant Rebates
As you stock up on school supplies and groceries for the upcoming second semester, please remember our valued merchants who provide rebates to DES for your purchases. Thank you, in advance, for thinking of DES when you shop!
Remember to present your Publix Partner card to the cashier when you shop at Publix grocery stores. Cards, which can be attached to your keychain, can be obtained in the front office if you do not already have one. Every time you use your card, DES receives a percentage of your total receipt.
All of these products have Box Tops on them! Clip them, send them to school, and earn cash for DES. Each Box Top is worth 10 cents! Place all Box Tops in the collection box in the lobby.
The next submission deadline for Box Tops is February 15th. Prizes will be awarded for top earners. To be eligible for prizes, please do the following:
- Clip your valid Box Tops and place them in a baggie.
- Label the outside of the baggie with your child's name, teacher, grade, and # of Box Tops.
- Place baggies in the Box Tops school house in the lobby near the couches at anytime. If you submit multiple bags, they will be included in your total for prizes.
- Collection sheets will be accepted, but labeled baggies are much easier to count.
Remember, this is EASY money for our school. We have earned over $1,600 for DES this school year alone. Keep them coming! eBox Tops can also be earned at www.boxtops4education.com by playing online educational games, or shopping the Box Tops marketplace and Reading Room.
If you are a Target Credit Card, Target Visa Credit, or Target Debit Cardholder, go to:
https://www-secure.target.com/redcard/tcoe/home, and enroll your card in the Take Charge of Education program. Target donates 1% of your card purchases made in store and at Target.com; 1/2% of purchases made outside the store with the Target Visa Credit Card. Please enroll and make your purchases support our school! Search DES by zipcode or by our School ID: 152367.
Remember to indicate DES to the cashier each time you make purchases at Office Depot stores. As part of their 5% Back To Schools Program, Office Depot gives back 5% of all qualifying purchases. It is important to tell the cashier that DES is your participating member school at the time you ring up your purchases.
More Ways to Help Your School like this can be found on the Raising Funds page of the PTO Website. |
