Announcements

From the PTO Co-Presidents

Can you believe it is December already??? This school year is almost half over. And it has been great so far! Let us take a moment to highlight some of the great things that have happened through the DES PTO already!

Thanks to your very generous donations for our 2nd Annual Tiger Fund campaign, we were able to raise $49,000 for our school & kids this year. As a reminder, your giving allows us to support cultural arts programs, financially donate to each classroom, and provide unique events for the children at Dunwoody Elementary, to name a few. Donations are still being accepted and please check with your company to see if it has a matching program.

Our DES PTO Staff Appreciation team has been hard at work to show our teachers how appreciated they are.Through this committee, we showed our gratitude to each staff member with snacks, breakfast, lunch and other goodies. And this week we will shower our entire DES staff with a nice monetary gift to kick off their holiday break.

We have had very successful family events. DES families have joined for fun evenings to support our school at Chick Fil-A, Shane's Rib Shack, Mad Italian, My Froyo, Alon's Bakery, Great American Cookies, and Sandy Springs Funhouse. Each business gave a portion of DES sales back to our school. This money goes directly to the school and helps fund the grounds and organic gardening projects; special visitors like illustrator Michael White; a service contract for the 2nd floor copier; and general PTO costs. Spirit night events like these are a great opportunity to visit with other DES families and create that DES community spirit! Look for more fun events in the spring.

As you can see, we are a productive and busy PTO. We have many exciting events coming up in the new year including more principal's coffees and visiting authors, an International Committee Potluck dinner and the 2nd annual Evening of the Arts. We are continuing to track volunteer hours (remember to shoot for 10 or more hours per semester) and would welcome any help with these mentioned events or other PTO related opportunities.  Just email us to find out how you can get involved.

Our hope is that everyone has a safe and relaxing holiday season. Thank you for all you do to make DES a special place for our children.

See you at the school in the new year,

Shari Wassell and Amy LeVasseur

Holiday Cultural Experience

On the last day of school, your kids will come home talking about what a GREAT cultural experience they had! That's because on December 21st, Ritmo Blu, the trio of percussionists, will perform 3 assemblies at DES focused on engaging the children in a Rhythmic Journey Around the World. Geography and Music all in one - ask them about it!

Chick-fil-A loves Dunwoody Elementary School!

Room Parents and Holiday Party Parent organizers:

For the month of December, any CFA Nugget Tray ordered from CFA/Perimeter Pointe (any size) will receive Icedream coupons for the classroom.

In addition, if a DES family orders the tray for a personal party....they will also receive the Icedream coupons (a total of 25) to use as they please!

Thanks for making the Dunwoody Elementary ~ Chick-fil-A/Perimeter Pointe partnership so successful!!!

DES Dad's, did you miss the All Pro Dad Breakfast

last month?

If you answered yes, don't worry. Come to this month's meeting!

Friday, December 21 - 6:45 to 7:45am.

Please arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria (6:45 - 7:15am)

Program will begin in the media center at 7:20.

This month's topic is "Childhood Memories"

All Pro Dad Dad's Day is a simple idea with a profound impact. It's a one-hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria. During this time, we will discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and leave equipped with resources to strengthen your relationship with your child.

The program is fun and free! All you need to do is attend, and if you want to purchase breakfast, you may do so in the cafeteria by using your child's "mylunchmoney" account, cash or check ($1.50 adults, $1.15 children). If you do not have a "mylunchmoney" account, please register for one at www.mylunchmoney.com before the meeting.

To help with keeping the parking lot and carpool drop off running smoothly, please park at GA Perimeter College and walk over to school.

Please visit our chapter website for dates and more information.

 Winter Parties (December 21)

Parents: You should have received information from your room parents or teacher about the annual holiday party for your classroom. All parties will be held on Friday, December 21 from 1:15-2 pm. There is a limit to the number of parents per classroom so please check with your room parents and/or teacher if you wish to be a part of this celebration. We ask that all parent volunteers park their cars at Georgia Perimeter College for this event. Thanks!

Some notes about the parties:

  • Parties begin no earlier than 1:15 PM - Parents will be admitted to the classrooms no earlier than 1:00 PM to set-up. Parties must end at 2:00 PM so that students can be ready for dismissal. Visitors are asked to leave the campus by 2:15 PM so that we can provide a safe, orderly dismissal process for our students.
  • Parent helpers/room parents/volunteers should be limited to 5-6 adults per classroom. More than 5-6 parents per classroom gets to be too crowded for our students.
  • Outdoor activities are fine, but space can not be guaranteed. No water related activities.
  • Parking is available at GA Perimeter College. Please avoid parking in the bus lanes (along the curb). Our buses arrive on campus by 1:30 PM and need space to drive/park.
Chess at Dunwoody Elementary

Championship Chess presents a systematic, fun way to build chess skills during chess instruction and while students play. Studies show that chess improves math, reading and problem-solving and our methods connect these academic benefits to our classes. Classes include instruction as well as chess play and guided analysis.

Coach Steve Schneider has been a teacher and chess coach for over 25 years. Championship Chess teams have won local, regional, state and national tournaments. Coaches utilize a complete curriculum introducing, reinforcing and improving chess skills and strategies in the opening, middle and end game.

Day/Time: Thursdays after school from 2:35 to 3:35pm. Children must be picked up on time.

Dates: Winter session January 10 to March 7. A spring session will start March 14.

Who can play: Any student in 1st grade and up. Younger students accepted if they know how to play. Limited enrollment due to available space. There can be 2 groups: An advanced class open to all students who know how to play requires at least 10. A beginner class for non-players requires at least 8.

Cost: Winter session is $135 returning student; $155 including instructional material for students new to Championship Chess program

Registration Deadline: Received by December 17 or a $15 late fee must be included after the deadline

Registration/Payment: Pay online at www.championshipchess.net and you will receive an automated email receipt confirming payment. For an alternate method of payment, email chess@championshipchess.net.

Suggested Tournaments: Players who have studied Openings 1 are prepared to participate in these events.

  • Monday, January 21 MLK Holiday Chess Tournament. Location: Whitfield Academy, Cobb. $25 entry fee. Round 1 at 10:00am. Team and individual trophies.

WDES Students visit 11Alive Studios

Last weekend, some of our WDES students had the exclusive opportunity to tour the 11Alive television studio and meet the weekend news crew including Allison Chinchar and Valerie Hoff. The students were able to sit at the news desk and learn how the green screen works.

Thanks to parent and 11Alive newsperson, Jennifer Leslie Boettcher, for spending her morning with our students.
