Announcements

From the PTO Co-Presidents

We had another successful spirit night this past week. Following the Dunwoody Singers and Band concert on Tuesday, DES families were invited to have a sweet treat at My Froyo in the Publix shopping center. Thanks to all those that attended and helped raise money for the PTO. Don't forget to join us for our last one of the semester - Chick-fil-A on Tuesday, December 11.

As we get to the end of the 1st semester, please remember to adhere to the school policies for our carpool operations. We try very hard to make sure no parent and child has to wait very long in the carpool line, so please assist us with this goal. We ask that you do not drop your children off while in the carpool line until you reach the flag pole at the front of the school. This practice allows the carpool line to keep moving and will help keep our children safe. We also request that if you want to park at the school during carpool hours (7-7:45 am and 2:15-2:45 pm, Monday through Friday), please use the school lot closest to Georgia Perimeter College. This will help keep you from interfering with the smooth flow of bus and car traffic in the carpool line. As always we welcome any suggestions you have about how to make carpool run smoother. We also welcome additional volunteers to assist with opening and closing doors during the morning carpool (7-7:45 am). Please contact our Transportation Committee chairs Liz Dallas (lathompsondallas@gmail.com) and Ana Maria Garcia Lopez (wong.lopez@att.net). Thanks for your assistance.

See you at the school,

Shari Wassell and Amy LeVasseur

DES Dad's, did you miss the All Pro Dad Breakfast

last month?

If you answered yes, don't worry. Come to this month's meeting!

Friday, December 21 - 6:45 to 7:45am.

Please arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria (6:45 - 7:15am)

Program will begin in the media center at 7:20.

This month's topic is "Childhood Memories"

All Pro Dad Dad's Day is a simple idea with a profound impact. It's a one-hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria. During this time, we will discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and leave equipped with resources to strengthen your relationship with your child.

The program is fun and free! All you need to do is attend, and if you want to purchase breakfast, you may do so in the cafeteria by using your child's "mylunchmoney" account, cash or check ($1.50 adults, $1.15 children). If you do not have a "mylunchmoney" account, please register for one at www.mylunchmoney.com before the meeting.

To help with keeping the parking lot and carpool drop off running smoothly, please park at GA Perimeter College and walk over to school.

Please visit our chapter website for dates and more information.

 Winter Parties (December 21)

Parents: You should have received information from your room parents or teacher about the annual holiday party for your classroom. All parties will be held on Friday, December 21 from 1:15-2 pm. There is a limit to the number of parents per classroom so please check with your room parents and/or teacher if you wish to be a part of this celebration. We ask that all parent volunteers park their cars at Georgia Perimeter College for this event. Thanks!

Some notes about the parties:

  • Parties begin no earlier than 1:15 PM - Parents will be admitted to the classrooms no earlier than 1:00 PM to set-up. Parties must end at 2:00 PM so that students can be ready for dismissal. Visitors are asked to leave the campus by 2:15 PM so that we can provide a safe, orderly dismissal process for our students.
  • Parent helpers/room parents/volunteers should be limited to 5-6 adults per classroom. More than 5-6 parents per classroom gets to be too crowded for our students.
  • Outdoor activities are fine, but space can not be guaranteed. No water related activities.
  • Parking is available at GA Perimeter College. Please avoid parking in the bus lanes (along the curb). Our buses arrive on campus by 1:30 PM and need space to drive/park.
Chess at Dunwoody Elementary

Championship Chess presents a systematic, fun way to build chess skills during chess instruction and while students play. Studies show that chess improves math, reading and problem-solving and our methods connect these academic benefits to our classes. Classes include instruction as well as chess play and guided analysis.

Coach Steve Schneider has been a teacher and chess coach for over 25 years. Championship Chess teams have won local, regional, state and national tournaments. Coaches utilize a complete curriculum introducing, reinforcing and improving chess skills and strategies in the opening, middle and end game.

Day/Time: Thursdays after school from 2:35 to 3:35pm. Children must be picked up on time.

Dates: Winter session January 10 to March 7. A spring session will start March 14.

Who can play: Any student in 1st grade and up. Younger students accepted if they know how to play. Limited enrollment due to available space. There can be 2 groups: An advanced class open to all students who know how to play requires at least 10. A beginner class for non-players requires at least 8.

Cost: Winter session is $135 returning student; $155 including instructional material for students new to Championship Chess program

Registration Deadline: Received by December 17 or a $15 late fee must be included after the deadline

Registration/Payment: Pay online at www.championshipchess.net and you will receive an automated email receipt confirming payment. For an alternate method of payment, email chess@championshipchess.net.

Suggested Tournaments: Players who have studied Openings 1 are prepared to participate in these events.

  • Monday, January 21 MLK Holiday Chess Tournament. Location: Whitfield Academy, Cobb. $25 entry fee. Round 1 at 10:00am. Team and individual trophies.

America Recycles Day

Thank you so much to everyone who participated in our 2nd annual America Recycles Day event! It was a huge success and the kids were so excited to talk about everything they could recycle at school and at home. We collected shoes of all kinds, cell phones, and batteries. We will continue to collect these items and more throughout the school year. Look for our recycling center just inside the school. We are also recycling in the cafeteria - water bottles, Capri Sun pouches and Styrofoam trays.

Look for more exciting recycling initiatives at DES soon!

Strong 4 Life

The Strong 4 Life program is a school wide event that encourages teachers to be role models. A pep rally was held at Dunwoody Elementary to share the message with students about making healthy choices. Concepts are reinforced throughout the school year.
