From the PTO Co-Presidents
Thank you to our Community Business Support chairs, Yvette Megathlin and Amber Pride for organizing a fun day last Tuesday at Sandy Springs Funhouse during the election day holiday. Also, thanks to all those that attended this event and helped support the PTO. We'll have another SS Funhouse spirit day in the 2nd semester.
We also want to thank and recognize the businesses and individuals that participated in our Fall Fun Days by providing their time and talents with all of the Dunwoody Elementary children.
- Allison Chinchar from 11alive Weather and the 11Alive weather van
- David Boyd from Dunwoody Nature Center - please see the PTO website for details about the DNC's upcoming Thanksgiving holiday camps
- Billy Kidwell with American Disposal
Services and fellow DES parent - Dr. Christine S. Scott, Dr. J. Richard Remigailo and Laura Breyley from Dr. Jason Kaplan's office - all dentists that demonstrated good dental hygiene and the process of making dental molds, in addition to providing "goodie bags" for all students
Our school is very fortunate to have businesses and people like these willing to donate their time and resources in order to help educate our students.
We appreciate all the families that walked to school on Wednesday for our last walk to school event of this semester. We had a nice crowd on the sidewalks despite the cold, rainy weather. Our next walk to school day will be March 6 so mark your calendar and plan to join us.
See you at the school,
Shari Wassell and Amy LeVasseur

Morning Carpool
For the safety of the children in school area, the carpool team is making some changes. We'll do our best to get your kids on time to school, but we need your help!
The drop off line starts where the school flagpole is located. Children should not be dropped off before the flag. Cars should proceed to the end of the drop off zone and have their children ready so we can make the drop off as quick and smooth as possible. There will be parent volunteers and staff members walking along the sidewalk to remind you where the drop off starts.
Thank you very much for your cooperation!

The program kicks-off next Friday, November 16, with a pep rally. Students will learn all 4 components of being healthy and will receive a water bottle to encourage drinking water.
The Strong 4 Life representatives will visit throughout the year during lunch time and PE time to promote healthy eating and exercise. In May the program will culminate with a fun run. Ask your children if they are ready to take the Strong 4 Life Challenge! For more information and suggestions for creating a healthy lifestyle, visit the website www.strong4life.com. |

Wednesday, November 14
The DES PTO is proud to welcome visiting authors and illustrators for our students each year. Next week we will feature Michael White, a children's book illustrator. Michael is from Georgia and is the illustrator for several books including Harriet's Horrible Hair Day, The Library Dragon, Return of the Library Dragon, and The Secret of Old Zeb. This is his first visit to DES.
All students will have the chance to visit with Michael and understand what an illustrator does and practice making their own illustrations.
For more information about Michael, visit http://www.michaelpwhite.com
Parents can order Michael's books in advance and have the books autographed by Michael. Orders may be placed by going to the following link: Michael White Order Form
Please print out the order form and drop it in the large PTO mailbox at the school with your payment by Tuesday. Please note: we can not guarantee autographs in books ordered after Tuesday. Ordered books will come home in your child's book bag.
For additional details, please contact Shari Wassell, DES PTO co-president at shariwassell@gmail.com

DES Dad's, did you miss the All Pro Dad Breakfast

If you answered yes, don't worry. Come to this month's meeting!
Friday, November 16 - 6:45 to 7:45am.
Please arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria (6:45 - 7:15am)
Program will begin in the media center at 7:20.
This month's topic is "Kindness"
All Pro Dad Dad's Day is a simple idea with a profound impact. It's a one-hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria. During this time, we will discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and leave equipped with resources to strengthen your relationship with your child.
The program is fun and free! All you need to do is attend, and if you want to purchase breakfast, you may do so in the cafeteria by using your child's "mylunchmoney" account, cash or check ($1.50 adults, $1.15 children). If you do not have a "mylunchmoney" account, please register for one at www.mylunchmoney.com before the meeting.
To help with keeping the parking lot and carpool drop off running smoothly, please park at GA Perimeter College and walk over to school.

The Big Thank You
Last year, Dunwoody Elementary School participated in The Big Thank You for the Bert Show. The purpose of The Big Thank You is that every single soldier stationed or deployed outside the United States deserves to receive a letter of gratitude on Thanksgiving Day. DES wanted to give our troops a "Big Thank You" with a little taste of home this Thanksgiving. As part of the Skills Builder block, students created letters that were heartfelt, handwritten, original, and free of any political statements. The purpose of the letter is to express thanks to the military personnel currently deployed outside the United States. Students were able to include their mailing and/or e-mail address if they chose.
