Announcements

From the PTO Co-Presidents

Thank you to all the families that came by the school this past week and purchased books from our Book Fair. A portion of these proceeds will go to the PTO to help fund the programs and activities we will host this school year. We also thank all the parents that attended our 2nd annual Fall Family dinner. We had a great turnout and hope you enjoyed the entertainment, food and opportunity to socialize with your family and DES friends. This dinner was brought to you by your contributions to our Tiger Fund.

A big thank you to our Family Events and Book Fair committee members and their chairs Maria Jacobs and Katie Frame/Jennifer Seitz, respectively, for all their work to make these events so successful.

We also thank the parents that have taken the time to attend our Volunteer Reporter training sessions. As a reminder, you can always attend a session offered at another DeKalb County school. In addition, we have a Powerpoint presentation available to view in the media center. Please see Ms. Gurin, media center specialist, regarding this option. Once a large enough group is gathered, she will offer times for these parents to view the presentation instead of doing it one at a time so as not to interfere with library activities. Remember to log your hour for this training by going to the PTO website.

We have started a public recognition for all the parents that help at the school or at home 10 or more hours. Each one of us is a piece to the puzzle and we hope you will add your piece if you haven't already. Please remember to log your hours and help us put the puzzle together.

Remember to join us for our 2nd annual Tour de Dunwoody on Saturday, October 20. Following the bike ride we will plant two trees to honor last year's PTO co-president, Mellie O'Keefe and the 2010-2011 co-president, Kevin Cameron. Join us in the parking lot for this special ceremony.

Have a great week!

Shari Wassell and Amy LeVasseur

Upcoming Events

Bus Driver Appreciation Day

School bus drivers carry our most precious cargo to and from school every day  so it's time to tell them THANK YOU! Monday, October 15 is the Official Georgia School Bus Driver Appreciation Day, so take a moment and tell those hard working drivers, thank you.

We will recognize them and have gifts for them on DES Staff Appreciation Day in April, so a homemade card, a smile, and some kind words of thanks are all you need for this day.

Box Tops Deadline Tomorrow!

Box Tops do have expiration dates, so send in your collection sheets or place your Box Tops in baggies, writing your child's name, grade, and # of Box Tops on the outside. Our Fall deadline is Tomorrow, Monday, October 15! For a complete listing of products, see the Dunwoody PTO website, or the Box Tops for Education Website.  Remember to save and send your Box Tops ALL YEAR LONG!

DES Dads, did you miss the first All Pro Dad Breakfast last month?

If you answered yes, don't worry, come to this month's meeting!

Friday, October 19 - 6:45 to 7:45am

Please arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria (6:45 - 7:15am)

Program will begin in the media center at 7:20am.

This month's topic is "Bullying"

All Pro Dad Dad's Day is a simple idea with a profound impact. It's a one-hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria. During the program, we will discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and leave equipped with resources to strengthen your relationship with your child.

The program is fun and free! All you need to do is attend, and if you want to purchase breakfast, you may do so in the cafeteria by using your child's "mylunchmoney" account, cash or check ($1.50 adults, $1.15 children). If you do not have a "mylunchmoney" account, please register for one at www.mylunchmoney.com before the meeting.

To help with keeping the parking lot and carpool drop off running smoothly, please park at Perimeter College and walk over to School.

Please visit our chapter website for dates and more information.

Organic Gardening at DES

Organic Gardening at DES has begun!

Parent volunteers led by Kathy Forte recently weeded and tilled 7 of the garden beds outside the school. This past week during recess, students helped plant lettuces, carrots, ground cover crops and other seeds to start the DES organic gardening program sponsored by your Tiger Fund dollars. The students will help water the beds and will harvest the produce later this fall. If you are available to help with this project, please contact Kathy Forte at kathyforte@att.net. We need volunteers to help water, harvest and plant the next round of  seeds.

Win $10,00 for an Outdoor School Project

Our school could win $10,000 for an Outdoor School Project

We could use this money for our organic gardens, to replace trees that have died since the school was built or just to add some new landscaping to the grounds. Every penny helps!

The SCOTTIES® TREES ROCK! Video Contest was designed to energize kids to get creative and share why they think trees are an important part of our school community and why planting them is beneficial for everyone. And the best part is, our school can benefit too!

The SCOTTIES® TREES ROCK! Video Contest could award a lucky 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader at our school:

  • $10,000 for a outdoors school improvement project, along with a tree planting ceremony
  • $5,000, plus a trip to Grand Canyon or Yellowstone National Park and an electronic tablet

Spread the word - the more entries for our school, the better our school's chance of winning! Learn more at: www.scottiestreesrock.com

Message from the Dunwoody Rotary Club

Calling all Runners!

Rotary Club of Dunwoody appreciates the support and participation of your school in the upcoming RunDunwoody on Sunday, October 21.  Visit rundunwoody.net or see the attached Team Challenge Flyer for more information.

As you may be aware, the Race provides for team runners. As such the Rotary Club of Dunwoody has commissioned a Floating Trophy to be awarded to the Principal of the Elementary School with the largest group of runners. The trophy will be retained by the winning school for approximately one year and then handed over to the next winner. Please encourage your students, including their families, faculty and administrators to select your school's team when they register for the race. The Trophy will be presented later this year to the winning school's Principal. This is a friendly competition between Austin, Chesnut, Dunwoody, Hightower, Kingsley and Vanderlyn.

We are grateful for your work in our community and support of this annual event.
