May Birthstone: Emerald

-Fine emeralds can be found in Colombia, Zambia, Brazil, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan and Russia. Colombian emeralds are renowned for their especially fine, shining green unimpaired by any kind of bluish tint; Brazil produces emeralds in beautiful green tones; Zambian stones are famous for their crystalline appearance.

-One of the world's largest emeralds is the Mogul Emerald. It dates from 1695 and weighs 217.80 carats. One side of it is inscribed with prayer texts and the other engraved with magnificent floral ornaments.
June Birthstone: Moonstone or Alexandrite

-The moonstone was very popular around 100 years ago at the time of Art Nouveau. It adorns a noticeably large number of the jewelry creations of the French master goldsmith Ren Lalique and his contemporaries.

-Sri Lanka is one of the main countries of origin of classical moonstones.

-The most sensational feature about alexandrite is its surprising ability to change its color. Green or bluish-green in daylight, it turns a soft shade of red, purplish-red or raspberry red in incandescent light. Finely faceted alexandrites above one carat are thus among the most expensive gemstones in the world, rarer than fine ruby, sapphire or emerald.

Art-Deco style, eye-popping colored gemstones and one-of-a-kind statement jewelry are some of the key messages for this year's Couture Design Awards.
Hundreds of people from the Couture community were in attendance when the winners of the Couture Design Awards were announced in Las Vegas on May 31. This year's Human Spirit Award goes to Jim Rosenheim of Tiny Jewel Box. Prior to the presentation, there was a brief moment of silence for the late designer Robin Rotenier.
"From the conception of an idea to a finished work of art, your creative process is what distinguishes you as true artists," said Couture Show Director Gannon Brousseau at the Awards ceremony.
All design entries were displayed in the competition hallway at the Couture Show. The panel judges-consisting of fellow designers, cornerstone retailers and jewelry editors voted for the winning pieces on site, while retailers voted for the "People's Choice Awards" at Couture.
Couture is an international jewelry and timepiece community of top designers and high-end retailers from around the world.

River Bank Gem Mining Projects Gain Big Profit, Sri Lanka Authority said

Gem mining projects in several river bank areas could earn around $8.5 million (Rs 500 million) in profit, up from last year's $2.5 million ( Rs 147 million), Janaka Udaya Kumara, Director General of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) said in a recent interview with Sri Lanka's national newspaper Daily News Business.

The projects were launched with the aim of increasing revenues and undermining the illegal mining activities that affect the environment, with the participation of low-income people in those areas.

The most recent production is the Seethawaka gem mining project which, combining its two phases, garnered around $8 million (Rs 470 million). 54 percent of the income went to the NGJA. Another successful production is the Haraniyawaka project at the Kaluganga Kiriella division which has uncovered $761,968 (Rs 45 million) worth of gemstones.

An upcoming project located outside the Moragahakanda reservoir will be the biggest project conducted by the NGJA. Kumara also revealed that they have made plans for the Bogawanthalawa and Watawala Mount areas from which they "expect high returns."

In addition to increasing mine production in the country, the NGJA is also actively participating in many leading international jewelry and gem shows to increase exports, Kumara added.

A feature article titled "Sri Lanka Launches Gemstone Mining Environmental Project" with special mention to other environmental initiatives the Authority has developed was published in the Fall/Winter 2013 edition of InColor. The article was written by ICA director from Sri Lanka Gamini Zoysa.  Read the full story here.

Red Carpet Jewelry
It always starts with the shiny things. In the hot summer days, a breath of fresh air easily cheers us up, so are some sparkling colors! From the 2014 Cannes Film Festival to the Tony Awards, celebrities paired their light-colored red carpet gowns with flamboyant jewelry adorned with colored gemstones such as opals, turquoise, emeralds and amethysts, presenting a sense of mesmerizing Old Hollywood style. Equally impressive are the size of the jewelry! Dramatic statement designs are officially in the trend.

Jennifer Lawrence wore a pair of emerald earrings by Irene Neuwirth at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17. Meghan Collison stepped out in a pop of color with a Lightning Ridge blac opals, rose cut diamonds and diamond paves necklace by Irene Neuwirth at the 2014 CFDA Awards in New York on June 2.  Idina Menzel wore a Zac Posen silk faille mermaid gown and a pair of earrings by Jacob &Co at the Tony Awards on June 8, the biggest night in Broadway.
Here we are drawn to some treasure hunt for the most exquisite red carpet jewelry.

High bids for colored gemstone and color diamonds jewelry dominated the Spring 2014 auctions, with a few pieces achieving world records. At the Christie's London auction on June 4, an enamel and diamond snake watch by Bulgari was sold for $1,107,038; and an early 20th century cushion-cut 4.6 carat Kashmir sapphire and diamond brooch fetched $304,958.
In Asia, Hong Kong maintains its position as one of the leading world-class auction centers. The Christie's sale of Magnificent Jewels on May 27 set two world records- a pair of pear-shaped diamond ear pendants (weighing 25.49 and 25.31 carats) realized as much as $9.7 million and a 6.13 carat cushion-cut fancy intense green diamond ring sold for $3.6 million, setting a new world record auction price for an intense green diamond.

The enthusiasm of international collectors sustained strong. Mr. Edmond Chan, head of Jewelry Asia at Luxeford, noted that this spring season "sees a natural flow of interests for fine colored gemstone pieces and diamond alike, with stylishness, refinement and versatility in mind." At a recent Luxeford's Spring Fine Jewels Auction in Hong Kong, a 19.30 carat natural Ceylon (Sri Lanka) sapphire and diamond ring was sold for around $138,461 (HKD 1.08 million), five times higher than the low estimate. The sapphire is of intense cornflower blue color, very clean clarity and has no indication of thermal treatment.

Leveraging on the growing auction industry in mainland China, Phoenix Life Jewelry Co. Ltd. held an auction of fine jades, colored gemstones and other valuables in Beijing. 161 out of total 300 lots were sold, generating around $14.1 million (88 million RMB) in revenues. A carved jadeite screen by Chinese sculptor Song Jianguo fetched about $3.6 million (22.5 million RMB).
Xiao Yongfu, known as "the godfather of gems and jewelry" for his expertise and influences in mainland China, noted that auction has become a new way of consuming pattern in mainland China, following the trends in Europe, the US, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. He added that at least 20-percent of the sales are done through auction houses in Hong Kong.
