ICA EVENT ROUND- UP - Hong Kong September Show
Gemstone Industry and Laboratory Conference (GILC)
The September GILC Hong Kong meeting was attended by 40 people representing major laboratories, government bodies, organizations, academic institutes and the gemstone trade. In the open discussion section, Richard Hughes from Sino Resources called for the whole colored gemstone community to help prevent the Mogok Mine from being further devastated due to the wide spread of mechanized mining. "There have been protests staged by both local people and the outside groups. The government has proved to be remarkably receptive to the protests." said Hughes. GILC participants agreed to work together on coming up solutions to solve the issue.
Prof. Mimi Ouyang, chairlady of the Gemmological Association of Hong Kong, took questions from the audience after her presentation. Prof. Ouyang brought the audience's attention to the market and definition of Fei Cui.
Before the GILC meeting, there was a discussion at the CIBJO conference regarding the disclosure nomenclature of the heavily treated lead-class rubies. With it being a timely topic, Mr. Chris Smith from American Gemological Laboratories (AGL) gave a presentation on the background of the composite sapphires and the standard observations and tests that allow these stones to be properly identified.
Prof. Dr. Henry Hnni, former director of SSEF, started his presentation by raising the question of "how can you guarantee the origin of a pearl, and how can you trace it back". He further illustrated some techniques of branding on pearls such as branded nucleus under X-ray, RFID chip, C and O isotopes and DNA testing.
Dr. John Ho from Hong Kong Accreditation Service analyzed the current situation and value of accreditation with emphasis on the testing of diamond, Fei Cui and gold fineness.
A report on the GILC 2013 Hong Kong meeting will be published in the upcoming issue of InColor (Issue 24) with more summary notes. Stay tuned!
