Message from the director

Every year the Library Journal (LJ), one of the most respected publications in the library community, names one library in the U.S. or Canada as the Library of the Year for demonstrating innovation and excellence. It's a great honor. This year, the San Diego County Library won the title, however we received Special Mention along with two other libraries. In the words of the LJ judges, "Three other libraries in particular deserve special mention for featuring the service philosophy and dedication to community that signify a Library of the Year." So, your top four libraries in the country (and Canada) are San Diego County, Gainesville Florida, Bedford Texas, and Waukegan Illinois. Now that's a big deal!

The Photography of Robert Dicke

Robert DickePhotographer Robert Dicke utilizes the camera as an artist would use a pen or pencil. Using a variety of artistic effects that restrict light and flatten shadows through the lens of the camera, his photographs look like illustrations. Dicke's print series, Portraits, Still Life & 3D, will be on display beginning August 18 through October 12.

Ray Bradbury Creative Contest

ray.bradbury.photo

On June 5, we lost our literary luminary and friend Ray Bradbury at the age of 91. Ray was a true visionary whose contributions to the literary world stretch well beyond his many books, stories, poems and plays. In honor of Ray this year, we would like participants to consider the idea of "influence" when creating their entry. Ray always recognized Halloween as having a major impact on his life and writing. In turn, participants are asked to submit an entry that expresses how Ray Bradbury has been an inspiration to their own life or work. Deadline for entries is October 1, 2012. Go here for the entry form and rules.

Lexile Measures

A Lexile is a score that measures either an individual's reading ability or the difficulty of a book or magazine article. The Lexile measure is shown as a number with an "L" after it and the higher the Lexile number, the higher the reading ability. All Lexile numbers are now included on each record in the library catalog. Go here for an example of a Lexile record in our catalog. And, you can get a list of books we have within a Lexile range by clicking on the "Search by Lexile Measure" link in each record. A great tool for parents and students! Go here to learn more about Lexiles!
