Message from the director

May 13th was Mother's Day but it was also graduation day for around 200 people who received their GED at the College of Lake County's GED Commencement at the Genesee Theatre.  I was asked to participate because the Waukegan Public Library is a community partner.  So I donned a cap and gown and got to sit on stage while the graduates received their certificates.  What struck me was the incredible sense of accomplishment that every single graduate showed with a big smile, a fist pump, or a hoot and a holler as they walked away with their hard earned diploma.  These are people of all ages who overcame many obstacles to obtain their goal.  But thankfully, the Waukegan Public Library was not an obstacle but rather a friendly ally that was there when they needed one.  No matter what your educational goal, we can help.  And that kinda makes me want to pump my fist into the air!

Su Biblioteca : Your Library

 su biblioteca

Have you noticed the new lettering on our front windows? We posted "su biblioteca" or "your library" on our windows to help our Spanish-speaking patrons understand that we're in the business of lending and not selling books. Many families in our community moved here from rural towns in Mexico and Central America, where they never visited nor had any familiarity with a library. Because the word library sounds like "libreria" or bookstore, our mission is sometimes misunderstood. We want to make sure everyone in Waukegan knows that we're a completely free resource, and we're your free resource.
