Happy New Year! As you read this, another year has moved from reality to history and the God who is making all things new has given us another new year filled with opportunities and possibilities. I hope you will resolve to make the most of it!

The older I get, the more convinced I become that two of the most important factors in building a wonderful life are the development of life building habits, and perseverance. The Word of God speaks to both. Let's consider them as we begin this New Year.

In the Book of Hebrews we read, "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another-and all the more as you see the Day approaching." The author is both admonishing against the bad habit of "giving up meeting together." And, indeed, there are three "meeting together" habits that are at the core of a healthy Christian life.

            1) Meeting together daily with the Lord! Now some of us who practice this habit refer to it as a "quiet time." While I have no problem with the term, the practice needs to be about more than simply getting quiet for a few minutes, or even reading a short passage from a devotional. If we are truly "meeting together" with the Lord, we need to make room for Him to speak. That is at the heart of the Bookmark and Journaling plan that we teach at TFC.  Jesus says, "What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs." Each month in this newsletter I write a "Whispers in the Dark" column where I allow you to overhear what I hear the Lord whispering to me in my daily time in His Word. That voice of the Lord is the true value of the bookmark and journaling plan.

Whispers in the Dark

Scripture - Mark 1:35 - "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, went off alone to a quiet place where He prayed."

Observation - Mark is not much for detail, yet he gives us a lot of detail in this passage. He tells us that it was very early, still dark and that Jesus left the house and went to a quiet place alone. I think these details are important. My daily time with God is critical not only to my ministry and discipleship, but also to my well-being as a person. It is obvious that Jesus thought it should be done first thing, alone and separate, before the stresses and pressures of the day kicked in. It was also something He did every day.

Application - I cannot look at my daily devotions as a box to check or as a trivial part of my life with Jesus. It matters, not just for my sake, but also for the sake of my children who need to grow up witnessing my devotion in the same way the disciples witnessed it in Jesus. I know that hurry is the by-product of poor planning, poor stewardship of my time and misplaced priorities. I know constant hurry can destroy my soul. That is why I need to stay committed to an early, unrushed time with God each day, to connect to my Lord and to restore my soul. It is not a matter of not having time. It is a matter of stewarding the time God has given me, the same amount everyone gets, so that what really matters happens.

Prayer - Lord, help me to crave You "as the deer pants for the water" so that I will truly find joy in my daily time with you and my soul can be refreshed. Help me to ruthlessly eliminate hurry from my life so that You and I can connect more fully. I love You Lord. Amen.

Gearing up for GIC

The start of each New Year brings with it the exciting lead up to our annual Global Impact Celebration, or GIC. It is very appropriate that GIC is sandwiched between Christmas and Easter because the Incarnation and the Resurrection of Jesus Christ provides the foundational message of the Church's mission. If you have been around The Family Church any length of time, you will hear it said repeatedly... "Missions is not a program of the church, it is the very reason for our existence." The reason that we have a Global Impact Celebration every year is to make sure that we never lose that vision, that call, that sacred trust, given to us by King Jesus!

Back in September, we unveiled the theme of our 2014 GIC - "Extend." Now we present the dates, February 21-23, our graphic theme, and our biblical theme:  Zechariah 9:9-10 that says,

"Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!           See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the war-horses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the river to the ends of the earth."

2014: Grow or Glide

What one word would you use to describe your relationship with Jesus in 2013? Dynamic, growing, intimate, exciting, amazing, unchanged, backslidden, stale, dead. Last January, we participated in the Reveal Survey. One of the strengths of 359 people who filled out the survey was their daily Bible readings. Willow Creek Association has surveyed 100,000s of church members found the following to be true:

"Nothing has a greater impact on spiritual growth than reflection on Scripture. If churches could do only one thing to help people at all levels of spiritual maturity grow in their relationship with Christ, their choice is clear. They would inspire, encourage, and equip their people to read the Bible - specifically, to reflect on Scripture for meaning in their lives. The numbers say most churches are missing the mark - because only one out of five congregants reflects on Scripture every day."  Pg. 19, Move by Greg Hawkins & Cally Parkinson

Let me challenge you to join us in reading, reflecting and journaling through the Bible in 2014. If you have been doing this, choose a different version. I am planning on reading The Message version in 2014. For first six weeks of the year, the pastoral staff will be preaching through sermons out of our journals from our bookmark readings for the week. The sermon series is called Whispers in the Dark.

Here are some suggestions of spiritual disciplines that you could grow closer to the Lord in 2014. Choose one and try to make it a habit. (If you don't know how to do one of these suggestions, talk to your Family Group leader or one of the pastoral staff.). . . .

Men's Ministry

As the New Year begins, we naturally take stock of our lives and make plans for the year that is before us.  We think about what things we did right and the areas that we can improve.  It is a natural inclination to make plans and think about what we expect to happen.  In reality, things never go as planned.  The things that surprise you are always unexpected.  The things we worry about usually don't occur.  The bible reminds us that worry will not add a second to our life.

What we can do is live each day as if it could be our last. We are never guaranteed tomorrow.  As you face a new year, I encourage you to start it off with an attitude of forgiveness.  Be the first to say you are sorry.  If there is a brother or sister (or friend or foe) that you hold anything against, make this the day that you face them with a clean heart. All of the commandments are summed up: Love God and others as yourself.

Pollen Fossils and Flowering Plants a,b,c

  Stephen F. Larner, PhD

Evolutionists still cannot get their story straight. According to their faith, most paleontologists believe flowering plants, or angiosperms, started evolving 135 million years ago and diversified to the point they became the dominant form of plant life 45 million years later. New discoveries, however, found floral origins and diversity to be at least another 108 million years older than predicted. Paleobotanists, Peter Hochuli and Susanne Feist-Burkhardt wrote, "In this paper we focus on fossil evidence, presenting the so far oldest angiosperm-like pollen from the Middle Triassic (ca. 243 Ma [million years]), a record that predates the generally accepted first occurrence of angiosperm pollen by more than 100 Ma."1

These fossilized flower pollen discoveries forced a shift, again, in the ever-changing story of plant evolution. Hochuli exclaimed, "We believe that even highly cautious scientists will now be convinced that flowering plants evolved long before the Cretaceous"(before dinosaurs).

Flowers are too fragile to be reliably fossilized so flower pollen stand in their stead. "The earliest accepted records are essentially based on dispersed pollen grains, which due to their high numbers and their high preservation potential represent the most appropriate tool to trace the timing of early angiosperm evolution"1.

Follow up for Ladies Christmas brunch:

Saturday, December 7th, was our fourth annual ladies Christmas brunch at The Family Church.  It was a beautiful morning and a perfect start to the Christmas Season.

A special thanks is due to the ladies on the planning committee who volunteered their time and energy to make the event a success: Cynthia Freeman, Krissy Howard, Meredith Mowitz, Carrie Pedreiro, Angie Phillips, Angela Renick, Bobbie Robinson, Kate Robinson, Vivian Sawyer, Karla Shelnutt, and Jennifer Thompson.  A heartfelt appreciation also goes out to our technical and sound support and the men who volunteered as servers for the brunch!

This year, we enjoyed a spectacular performance by Christmas carolers (Erin Cook, Dan and Teri Garard, and Tim Ten Broek) dressed in complete Dickens era costume.  This was a favorite part of the event that will definitely be repeated in future years.

The tables were decorated beautifully by ladies of the family church and their guests.  This brunch is the most well received and memorable ladies event at The Family Church.  If you missed it this year, make sure you plan to participate next year!

 The New Commandment
John 13:34-35

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another;
as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another"
