'Family Connections' Newsletter

A Word from Max Copy of Max 2

By now you have probably heard the exciting news....The Family Church collected over 1,000 Operation Christmas Child boxes this year! For over a decade you have all rallied to the call to help with this vital ministry, and this year was another wonderful response! Even as you read this, these 1,000 plus boxes are on their way to join others from all over the USA to be shipped to needy children around the world.

Can you imagine the excitement as these children receive their gifts? Can you picture what it is like to be a child who has never received a personal gift before and to suddenly receive a whole shoe box full...just for you? And can you sense what it would mean to hear the real Christmas story, and learn about "the reason for the season" for the very first time. The immediate joy of the gift can be transformed into the eternal joy of knowing Jesus and His saving love....truly the gift that keeps on giving.  And, I know from firsthand experience in dealing with kids like the ones who will receive these shoeboxes that the gratitude they express will be sincere and overwhelming. And I'm sincerely grateful to each of you who participated for helping to make all of this a reality for these children.

You know, it's funny because we've just come through the Thanksgiving season....you know that day we set aside as a nation so many years ago to be devoted to focus on our Lord and our gratitude to Him for all His provisions and blessings in our lives? You know, the day that has now become an excuse for gluttony, for sloth, for excess of nearly everything and now, sadly, even for excessive shopping? I wonder if there is any way that many of us who have been so richly blessed can recover a sense of the genuine gratitude, wonder and joy in our lives as those Operation Christmas Child children will experience when they receive their gifts. To be honest...I'm not sure. Perhaps we've just become too affluent, too entitled, too self-sufficient, too jaded, or too cynical to really have a place for genuine gratitude in our lives anymore. And yet, without gratitude we lose a central core feature of a healthy spirituality and a healthy life.

Whispers in the Dark

ScriptureI Samuel 6:13 - "Now the people of Beth-Shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley. When they looked up and saw the Ark, they went with rejoicing to meet it."

Observation - It was harvest time, an incredibly busy and task oriented time in an agrarian society. There is a limited amount of time in which to gather the crop. Not only the completion of all the work of the previous months rests on doing it well, but the future of the community and its resources are also at stake. It is into this harvest focused time that the Ark of the Covenant comes to the people of Beth-Shemesh. Their reaction is wonderful. The scripture says they looked up, saw the Ark, dropped what they were doing and went to meet it. The Ark was the symbol of the presence of the Living God among them. The reaction to its coming was very appropriate. This was no ordinary interruption. God was interrupting, and that takes precedence over everything. It is interesting to note that verse 19 says that the people of Jeconiah did not rejoice with the people of Beth-Shemesh. As a result, God was displeased to the point of killing them. We don't know why the descendants of Jeconiah did not rejoice. Maybe they didn't recognize the Ark. Maybe they were so busy they never looked up. Maybe they figured the importance of their task outweighed their desire to celebrate. Maybe they were annoyed at the interruption.  Whatever the reason, the scripture makes it clear that the people of Beth-Shemesh chose the better way.

Dear Families at TFC

Hopefully, you remember from this past summer that the Orphan Care Ministry teamed up with the Children's Ministry for our Missions for VBS. We got together to raise the funds to build a playground for the children that will soon be moving into the new Florida Baptist Children's Home right here in Alachua County. We love the vision behind these homes to keep sibling sets together, to drastically increase the availability of good foster care here in our area, and to show the love of Christ to these children going through extremely difficult times. AND God really moved in a beautiful way to encourage children and their families to give lavishly toward blessing these precious children with a beautiful playground. We are so excited to share with you that we have purchased the playground and it is on its way. The land will be prepped for the work soon and we have set a date to BUILD!

We need all hands on deck!! This is a large project and every bit of help can be used so that we can complete it in one day. So please join us to lend a hand for any amount of time you can.

When- Saturday December 7th, starting at 8 am
Where- Cellon-Thomas Children's Home
17224 North State Road 121,
Lacrosse, Florida 32658.

If you are coming from Gainesville, it is just after Roger's Farm and before Antioch Baptist Church, on your left.  Come ready to work and serve these precious children! Recruit your Family Group or some co-workers to serve together!

Please let us know if you are coming, as we want to be sure we have enough hands. You can direct your response and any questions to Haley Long at haleyuf@hotmail.com<mailto:haleyuf@hotmail.com>
or 352-317-1907. We'll see you there!

Presents and Presence -
Mission-Minded Gift-Giving

The month of December may be described as a time of competing cultural values. Why, because secular society promotes a "shop 'til you drop" spirit in which materialism motivates actions of giving, getting, and guilt for not conforming.  This thinking is superimposed upon the holiday (literally "Holy Day" season) during which time we celebrate the humble and unassuming entrance into the world of God's gift to humankind, Jesus, the Messiah. While biblical and secular worldviews are very different and often in conflict, the concept of gift giving and generosity are significant to both perspectives. Rather than erroneously fighting the concept of giving, let us seize the opportunity to evaluate the "why" and "how" to give in a way that has a Kingdom impact.

End of Year Giving to Support the Missions Efforts of The Family Church

Each year at our Global Impact Celebration (GIC), everyone who is a part of The Family Church makes a "Faith Commitment" of financial support for the local and global mission efforts of TFC. These funds are what help keep our missionaries and mission partnerships on the field and reaching the lost for Christ in their respective areas of ministry. This is a great time to catch up on those faith commitments or for additional contributions if you have been blessed with an abundance of resources this year. Please do not forget to note "GIC" on the memo line, knowing that your giving is impacting life for eternity around the world.

Special Christmas Gifts

Another way that you can give during this Christmas season is to support ministry partners with direct specific gifts that the Lord may lay on your heart. Here are three suggestions:

 Discipleship Ministry

What's an Alongsider?

"God is looking for amateurs to make disciples! This should be an encouragement to anyone wanting to participate in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20). In the original meaning of the word, amateurs are not people who lack skill or training. The word amateur comes from the Latin word meaning "lover." Amateurs are often skilled people working without compensation. Amateurs work not for pay but out of the sheer love and joy of what they do.

The Apostles were ministry amateurs. When Jewish boys reached their mid-teens, the best and the brightest were recruited by the local rabbi for advanced study. For those who didn't qualify, apprenticeship in a vocation was the next step. More fishermen were always needed (Matthew 4:21-22). These are religious amateurs (the Apostles) creating a stir. When the ministry professionals observed their boldness and confidence, they were amazed because "they were uneducated, common men...and they recognized that they had been with Jesus." (Acts 4:13)

Did Morality Evolve? a, b, c

Stephen F. Larner, PhD

The existence of morality has always been a challenge to explain for secular humanists and their ideologically cousins: atheism, agnosticism, naturalism, etc., i.e., those with an evolutionary worldview. Although most evolutionists adhere to a moral code of right and wrong, they have no rational basis for doing so. Creationists, on the other hand, have a rational, logical, and reliable reason for morality.

CNN conducted an interview with Dr. Richard Dawkins, the British biologist and professor at Oxford University, widely known for his belligerent attitude against religion and as an ardent atheist advocate, was asked, "whether an absence of religion would leave us without a moral compass?" Dawkins responded: "The very idea that we get a moral compass from religion is horrible." The heart of the issue for anti-God believers is that there is no need for religion or God-based morality, but that the world would be noticeably more moral without them. That belief is irrational and contrary to experience, an ignorance of history.b

Even though most people, like Dawkins, will not admit it, morality that most people adhere to is biblically based. As the revealed Word of God, the Bible is the ultimate authority and foundation for knowledge. It informs us the loving Creator retains the right to define absolute standards of behavior.

Christian philosopher Dr. Greg Bahnsen once stated, "What does the unbeliever mean by 'good,' or by what standard does the unbeliever determine what counts as 'good'? ... What are the presuppositions in terms of which the unbeliever makes any moral judgments whatsoever?"1 Although unbelievers may classify actions as good or evil, what is their foundation for defining them as so?

Interestingly, even many evolutionists recognize evolution cannot provide a basis for morality. William Provine, evolutionist and biology professor at Cornell University, noted in referring to the implications of Darwinism, "No ultimate foundations for ethics exist, no ultimate meaning in life exists, and free will is merely a human myth2." Per his view, if evolution is true, then there can be no universal moral code.
