A Word from Max
As I sit in the afterglow of the church's 20th Anniversary service and celebration all I can think is: WOW! What a wonderful time of giving glory to God through worship and praise, of hearing testimonies of changed lives, remembering the past and looking ahead to the future, and of good food, great fellowship, and loads of fun. It was a celebration we will remember for many years to come.
It was a special blessing to have founding Pastor Jim McCarty and his wife Shirley with us. Pastor Jim challenged us with a compelling message on overcoming our fears and moving into the plans and purposes God has for us, individually and collectively. It was a timely and important message indeed.
A special word of thanks to the more than 100 volunteers who made the Anniversary service possible. From child care workers, to parking attendants; from tech workers, to praise team members; from food servers, to greeters, to ushers, to those who set up and tore down tables and chairs, ticket sellers and collectors....well the list goes on and on; but each of you sacrificed time and effort to make this celebration so special. I am grateful to you all.

Written September 1, 2003 (my first day at The Family Church)
Scripture - Ezekiel 15:2: "O mortal, how does the wood of the vine surpass all other wood?"
Observation - The Lord says through Ezekiel that there is nothing special about the wood of a vine. It doesn't make anything and isn't even good for fuel. It is, essentially, worthless. Yet it is prized. How? And Why? It is prized for its fruitfulness, of course. If a vine produces a good crop of grapes, it is a rich treasure, greatly valued. It is doing what it was created to do. If not, it is less than worthless.
Ezekiel wants the people to understand two truths. The simple one is that unless they are fruitful - doing and producing what God created them for - they have very little practical value. Perhaps more important, however, is the second truth: everything of value in the life of the vine comes from its connection with the giver of life. It is a gift. The vine cannot produce fruit apart from the soil, the sun, the water. The fruit and the fruitfulness are gifts from God...grace even, and are the result of staying in right relationship to Him. If we ever lose sight of that we run the risk of prostituting ourselves in the same manner as Israel has done.

Global Impact Celebration
Ramping Up for 2014
Can it really be true? You are already talking about and planning for our Global Impact Celebration (GIC)? YES, we are moving forward for this significant annual event in the life of The Family Church. As you know, GIC is MUCH more than an event; it is an annual opportunity to focus on God's heart for the world and celebrate the advancement of His Kingdom through global missions.
The theme of GIC 2014 is "Extend." In a very real way Missions is the eXtended Family. It is a way to extend the Kingdom of God and to extend the impact of The Family Church, as we extend to the end of the street or to the ends of the earth. As the message of the Gospel goes OUT, new family members come IN. As a result of last year's GIC, The Family Church was able to partner with three new international missionary partners. Additionally, another couple from TFC is in the preparation process for their missionary assignment overseas to help reach unreached people in the "10/40 window." We trust that, through our annual GIC, God will extend His hand to touch the lives of Christians to pray, invest financially, serve locally, and go even as He extends His hand to draw non-Christians to Himself. . . .

Men's Ministry
Making Priorities
Summer is over and school is back in session. I was talking to a store manager yesterday that told me he has already received his Christmas merchandise to start displaying. We live in a hurried and well-connected world with many things vying for our time and attention.
Take time to remember the things that are important. Daily time with God should be at the top of the list. Next should be quality time with your family and loved ones. The busy things will always be there.
A wise person once said, "Spend time and money on memories not things". As we start a new school year and begin careening towards a succession of holidays. Take a breath and put the important things first.
Costs: $99 conference and lodging
(meals extra)
For more information on Promise Keeper's Conference, see the Men's table in lobby.

The Mathematician Ants
Stephen F. Larner, PhD

The laws of physics, highly mathematical in nature, only work if there are also laws of mathematics. However, unlike the laws of physics, the laws of mathematics are abstract. They are not part of any of the elements that make up the universe. Scientists and science fiction writers may imagine a universe where the laws of physics are different, but they cannot imagine a coherent universe where the mathematical laws differ. The laws of mathematics are an example of a "transcendent truth." They are required to be true regardless of the kind of universe God could have created; suggesting God's creation is logical and mathematical in nature. Secular naturalists believe in mathematics, but they cannot account for their existence within a naturalistic, evolutionary framework because they are not a part of the physical universe. On the other hand, because creationists accept there is a God who transcends the physical universe, they see mathematics as reflecting His thoughts. Understanding math is, in a limited, finite sense, "thinking God's thoughts after Him". Mathematics can aptly be called the "language of creation."1
Mathematics in Nature: Entomologists who study insects and spiders regularly discover examples of mathematical propensities hardwired into these tiny-brained arthropods. These marvelous algorithms shed light on insect origins.2 So, as an example let us look at mathematics embedded in the ant.

Acts 17: 23-31
26 And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, 27 so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; 28 for in Him we live and move and have our being. . .
30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, 31 because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead."
