A Word from Max
August 25th marks a historic moment in the life of The Family Church as we celebrate our 20th Anniversary. I hope you have all marked your calendars and are planning to join us for this great celebration.
The theme of this year's service is "We've Only Just Begun." Of course, as you read that you are probably reminded of a cheesy song by Karen Carpenter from many years ago. But we mean something quite different. In Deuteronomy 3:24 Moses is standing, looking over the Promised Land. He has already experienced so many amazing things from the Lord: The burning bush, the plagues, the staff, the parting of the Red Sea, the giving of the Law, the manna and the quail, and on and on the list goes. Indeed, Moses had even experienced the Shekinah Glory of God first hand! Yet, having experienced all these things, and knowing he is at the end of his life, he nonetheless says,'O Lord God, you have only begun to show your servant your greatness and your mighty hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as yours?" (Deuteronomy 3:24, ESV)
Do you get that....Moses knows that despite all he has seen, he has only begun to glimpse the Glory, the Power, and the Might of God. He knows that God can, and will, do so much more. At The Family Church, we know the same thing. Rarely has there ever been a church in north-central Florida more blessed than The Family Church. The growth, impact and mission of TFC in 20 years have been nothing short of miraculous. And we will celebrate so much of that miracle on the 25th. But even as we celebrate, we know that the Lord has only just begun to show his greatness and mighty hand. We've only just begun to see His power and glory! The best still lies ahead! We'll celebrate that as well.

Scripture - Matthew 26:58 - "But Peter followed Him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the High Priest."
Observation - It is amazing what a difference time and circumstances can make. When Jesus first encountered Peter, His request of Peter was simple: "Follow Me!" And just like that Peter did. For three years the two of them had been almost inseparable. Peter wanted to be as close to Jesus as possible. He pledged his eternal devotion. But now, time and circumstances had changed things. Jesus, in the eyes of the ever fickle crowd had gone from hero to zero, and for Peter being up close and personal with Jesus had become a dangerous proposition. Peter still loved Jesus. He still had a desire to "follow" Him, but he was afraid. Thus, he chose to follow the Lord...at a distance! He sought to be close enough to see what was going on, but far enough from the center of things to avoid being swept up in the action. He could observe without participation or commitment. It would take some time to restore Peter after this decision.
Application - What motivates human beings to want to follow at a distance? It would be easy to say "fear" except that Peter wasn't an especially fearful man. He had put his life on the line for Jesus before, and would do so many times later. Peter had already proven that for the right cause he had the courage to step into his fears. Instead, we often distance ourselves from those things in which we have begun to lose confidence. It works that way with sports. A winning coach loses a few games and people bail like rats off a sinking ship! Let the star quarterback throw a couple of interceptions and people will turn on him. But Jesus isn't a quarterback or a coach. He is our sovereign Lord. Psalm 125 says, "Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion which cannot be shaken but endures forever." The kind of faith that endures forever is a faith in the essential character and dependability of the one in whom we place our trust. Peter wanted to follow Jesus at a distance because he hadn't yet fully given his heart and life to Jesus. He was still second guessing the Lord. It is interesting to compare Peter's response to Jesus, who, facing the cross, asked God for another way. Jesus did not desire to die and earnestly sought God's face for another option. But, having found no other option, Jesus, with an unshakable faith in the character of God, went forward to the Cross. So where is my faith? Am I still following Jesus at a distance...looking on from the safety of the sidelines, still trying to decide if I can trust Him enough to get in the game? Or have I realized that the character of Jesus is such that I can face any challenge, any fear, if only I can stay close to Him?
Prayer - Lord, help me to be like Mount Zion, with a faith that cannot be shaken but endures forever. I don't want to know you from a distance, but up close and personal, with all that closeness implies. Help me Lord. - Itncountered Peter, His request of Peter was simple: "Follow Me!" And just like that Peter did. For three years t

Family Group Spotlight
Jody Thompson's Family Group
One of the things I love about my job as Discipleship Pastor is watching believers step out in faith and seeing God bless their efforts. This year Jody Thompson's Family Group has been one of those stories. Jody and I met back in August 2012 and he expressed an interest in leading a Family Group. As he started inviting those in his sphere of influence, God raised up a group of believers who were disconnected and began to minister to them through His Spirit in the context of biblical community. Listen to what this Family Group meant to the Gordon family as Alexis recounts their story:
"This was my first year to truly commit to a Family Group. I have participated in them in the past, but I never really considered myself a member. I was more like a distant relative that popped in from time to time. When a close friend of mine decided to start their own Family Group this fall, I decided to join. There is something to be said about helping originate such a group. Before I knew it, there was no option of backing out (not that I would ever want to). This group was a part of me, it was a lifeline. I didn't know it at the time, but God weaved me into the heart of this group because I needed it so badly.

Men's Ministry
Don't be Fooled!
Much study has been done on how our brain works. It is believed that our brain has two systems. The first, system one, is the quick thinking function. This keeps us from being bogged down with menial tasks. We can do some operations without much thought. Our brains recognize patterns and can fill in the blank or answer easy questions quickly so we can spend our brain energy on tasks that need more deliberation. 2+2=? You know the answer automatically.
The second system is for more sophisticated problems. This system requires us to give the situation more attention and consideration. 1,248 X 789=? The problem lies when we let unconsciously let the system one brain answer a question that the system 2 should answer. Example: You buy a pen and a paper at the store. The total cost is $1.10. The pen cost $1.00 more than the paper. How much was the paper? System one brain will quickly answer 10 cents. The correct answer is 5 cents. $1.05 + .05 = $1.10.
I thought about this when I was reflecting on 1Cor. 13, the love chapter. Paul lists all of the things we can do that are meaningless without love. My quick-thinking brain reflects on the people I love so that I can finish the chapter without much hesitation. There are lots of people I love and lots of ways I show love, so I'm ok. But, verse 5 says," keeps no records of wrongs". If I keep a record of a wrong, I'm not showing love to that person. It is not the people that show us love and are pleasant to us that God is only concerned with us showing love to. Reread the chapter. After the word love, insert someone's name that is hard to love or you struggle even being nice to. Don't let the system one brain obscure what God wants to reveal to your heart.

Local Ministry Opportunities to Serve
Hearing something "from the horse's mouth" is more powerful than hearing it through the grapevine. In this case, I hope that hearing directly from one of our Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) "workhorses" will inspire you to find your place in this significant local ministry.
The Interfaith Hospitality Program (IHN) unites churches to assist homeless families (must have a child or children). Each church commits to hosting the families for one week, four times a year. As volunteers, we are providing for the homeless families with human basic needs: shelter, safety and sustenance with a spirit of warmth and hospitality. In order to accomplish this, each church needs a primary coordinator AND assistant coordinators. Coordinators work together to plan out the needs for the week, recruit volunteers and manage the host week so that it runs smoothly.

Warning! 15 Weeks Could Change Your Life Forever
The "Perspectives on the World Christian Movement" course by the U.S. Center for World Mission is truly an "eye-opener." Each session of this 15-week class is led by a different context lecturer with specialized knowledge and experience on the topic at hand. Ajay Pillai, our 2011 GIC speaker will be one of those guest speakers. The "Perspectives" class will start on Wednesday, August 28th and will continue weekly, each Wednesday from 6:30-9:00 pm through December 11th and will be hosted right here at The Family Church.

Birds Wing It: Migration without a Map1
Stephen F. Larner, PhD
How do migrating birds unerringly know when to leave and where to go? I first touched upon migration in the March 2009 column when we looked at the Golden Plover. Let us delve deeper into this fascinating phenomena that still has scientists mystified.
When Bristle-thighed Curlew chicks are just five weeks old their parents depart for their winter-feeding grounds.2 Left behind in the Alaska Peninsula marshes the chicks gorge themselves on berries and insects to accumulate the fat reserves necessary to fuel their migratory journey. Then one day, when strong enough, they take off. Once aloft they find the right winds to begin their long nonstop flight south. Like most migratory birds, the chicks, with no prior knowledge, unerringly navigate the vast Pacific Ocean, and descend with pinpoint accuracy onto the mudflats and sandy beaches of islands of Fiji, Tonga and French Polynesia.

PRAYER
"There is nothing about which we may not pray. We pray as His children, and we trust Him as our heavenly Father. His answer will transcend our asking." Samuel Charwick
"When you come to God in prayer, you come to your Father. He wants you to come as a child who is loved, who is accepted, who is cared for, and who is secure. He wants you to come in openness, in confidence, in truthfulness. He waits to hear your heart, and to share His heart with you.
Through prayer you can gather the riches of heaven and bring them down to earth...you can delight in the beauty of heaven and carry it in your heart...you can enjoy the fellowship of heaven and walk in it throughout the day."
