A Word from Max
Elder G.W. Robinson recently shared with me an article by Mary Carothers. I thought the sentiments she expressed were so important that they merited repeating here. With gratitude to G.W., here is what
Mary Carothers shared:
"What is one of the most expensive things we do? The answer may surprise you. One of the costliest indulgences we engage in is complaining! Grumbling, criticizing, and faultfinding are costing us more than we can imagine.
Just for starters, having this attitude can cost us friendships as well as deeper relationships. Who wants to be around someone who is often griping about something or someone?
Many a job promotion can pass us by or go to someone less qualified if those who make the choices are turned off by our frequent faultfinding. Proverbs 18:20 tells us that we must be satisfied with the fruit of our lips - whether good or bad. Although I don't fully understand, it seems to be true that if we indulge in grumbling, we draw to ourselves an atmosphere or spirit of complaining, which in turn causes us to continue and even increase this harmful attitude and behavior.

Scripture - "For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong."
(2 Corinthians 12:10)
Observation - Weaknesses, trials, hardships, pain and suffering are not the things we would normally find pleasure in and be proud to proclaim... unless you are Paul - or like him - or serve His God! The world would not equate sufferings and hardships with winning trophies or receiving awards and rewards. Yet in God's eyes and world, for the sake of Christ, we are content with weaknesses, calamities, hardships.
Application - I hate suffering, pain, and hardships. I am such a wimp I find no pleasure in boasting about my weaknesses. When I'm insulted I want to insult. When I feel used, I want to retaliate. When I am persecuted, I want to fight. When something bad happens to me or my family, I want to get revenge. How evil, cold and hard my heart can be! But my renewed spirit in Christ says bring it on! I am a fighter of the good fight of faith, a scrapper in the Spirit. In my weakness I boast that Jesus' powerful presence may rest upon me, and His perfect example may motivate and educate me!
Prayer - Lord Jesus! I cry out in humility and repentance for Your grace, forgiveness and strength! Help me to boast in my weaknesses when I am ridiculed, talked about, looked down upon. These things don't even come close to comparing with Paul's definition of weakness. Oh God, have mercy on me, a wimp. But may I boast in any weakness for Your sake! For in my weakness I know that You are made strong!

Worship and Arts Ministry
In this month's newsletter, I wanted to express our heartfelt gratitude to Larry Carpenter, who has served the church for over five years as the leader of our Worship and Arts Ministry. Larry is a man of amazing talents and abilities, and has been a faithful presence for over half a decade as he has built teams and designed worship services. And, of course, we have all enjoyed his musical excellence on the keyboards.
Recently the elders and I decided to move in a new direction with the Worship and Arts ministry of the church. Larry and Cindy will be pursuing other opportunities and we wish them all the very best. Our love and prayers go with them as they move forward in God's plans for their lives. I trust you will join us in these prayers.
In the weeks ahead, Justin Piazza will be coordinating our weekend worship experiences. Some weekends you will notice our usual line-ups of TFC musicians. Many weekends, however, we will have guest worship leaders. Sometimes these worship leaders will be accompanied by their own bands, but often they will be accompanied by our own musicians. We are looking forward to a season of experiencing some of the variety and gifts that the Body of Christ has to offer in worship leadership. Please be in prayer for each of the leaders who come to share with us in worship.
In all the areas of our worship ministry we are still interested in gifted volunteers. Do you sing? Play an instrument? Have dance, drama, or set design skills? Like to work in video production or graphic arts? If so, we definitely would love to talk to you about a place in the ministry. Please feel free to contact Justin at justinp@thefamilychurch.net for more information.
I remain thankful for the hard work and dedication of all the people who serve so faithfully to lead us into the presence of God each week. I am excited about what lies ahead.
Many Blessings,
Pastor Max

Men's Ministry
A Father's Legacy
How will you be remembered? What remnants of you will be in your great-grandchildren 100 years from now? What is your legacy? These are interesting, if not difficult, questions to ask oneself. Nonetheless, it is good to ask these questions as we think about Father's Day.
The French sociologist Rouches said that a man's desire to leave a legacy, if he ponders upon it, can be one of the greatest motivators in life. The fourth-prong of The Family Church's mission is, "To Leave a Legacy."
So how do you leave a legacy? Paul, in I Thessalonians starting at 2:7, provides five life habits that will help any father leave a lasting legacy.
First, cherish your family
(v. 7): To cherish is to hold in high regard, to esteem highly or to place a great value upon. Paul compares the care he gave the Thessalonians to the care given a nursing infant by his mother. The figure implies a special effort to protect and to provide for every need, even to the extent of great sacrifice. Are you truly placing your family above all other things?

FAMILY GROUP SPOTLIGHT
God has designed us for community. Family Groups are those healthy relational environments where we discuss what God is saying to us in the Scriptures and share our lives together. Therefore I have decided to highlight a Family Group each month and what God is doing in a person's or couple's lives. I decided to make my Family Group the guinea pig.

My Hope with Billy Graham
When you hear the name "Billy Graham", what words come to your mind? Crusades? Great Evangelist? The Gospel? Personally, I cannot think of any other individual, in my lifetime, that has had a greater impact through personally sharing the good news of Jesus Christ to the masses. But why should he have all of the fun?!? "My Hope with Billy Graham" is a worldwide evangelistic initiative that moves his timeless message from the mass gathering of stadiums to the homes of individuals like you and me. He does the work of preaching the gospel while we have the joy of seeing our family, neighbors, and friends come into the Kingdom as children of God through faith in Christ.
My prayer goal is that God would raise up 100 households to serve as "Matthew" hosts. At its heart, this outreach is friends sharing Jesus with friends. In the same way that the disciple Matthew, after meeting and following Jesus, invited people to his home to meet Jesus, you too can have an eternal impact in the lives of your friends and neighbors. Two training times are scheduled this summer for anyone interested in being a "Matthew". Even if you are unsure, sign up for one of the trainings as there is no obligation to be a Matthew host. You could get together with a Christian friend and together be a Matthew host. The training will prepare you for the special program airing live on November 7, 2013 on the occasion of Billy Graham's 95th birthday, or another night via DVD. The two training times are:
Wednesday, July 10, 2013 from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm in TFC's Fellowship Hall
Wednesday, August 14, 2013 from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm in TFC's Fellowship Hall

Thermal Vents: Life without Sunlight1,2
by Stephen F. Larner, PhD
Interchanges between man and God are recorded throughout the Bible. One of the most fascinating is when God questions Job about creation. One of His questions was, "Have you entered into the springs of the sea?" (Job 38:16a) The Hebrew word for "springs," NEBEK, is defined as places where water issues or bursts out of the earth. The ocean is very deep, its floor in total darkness, and the pressure there is enormous, thus, it would have been impossible for Job to have explored the "springs of the sea," even if he knew where to look. So, if the Bible was not God inspired, how did the author know, nearly 3,500 years ago, about undersea springs since they were not confirmed to exist in the 1970's?
There are, also, other Old Testament verses that refer to springs of the sea. Genesis 7:11 for example notes the "fountains of the great deep were broken up and the floodgates of heaven were opened" as the cause of Noah's Flood. We find In Proverbs 8:28, "When he made firm the skies above, and the springs of the deep became fixed," another oceanic spring's reference.
Before 1930 - Little was known about the ocean floor. Volcanoes that were observed to break the ocean surface provided evidence of undersea volcanism and because volcanoes on land emit steam, scientists inferred that water might be coming out of undersea volcanoes.
1930's - The deep-sea dives of William Beebe's bathysphere provided a closer look at the ocean floor, but discovered no springs.

Colossians 1:15
"For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins." |
