A Word from Max
As you read these words, if the Mayans were wrong, the calendars have turned another page and 2013 is upon us. With the coming of the New Year, we are racing towards our 20th anniversary as a church. Later in the year, we will be celebrating what God has done in and through TFC during the past 20 years. However, as we begin a new year it is important to remember that we serve a God who is making all things new!
Periodically it is a good idea for individuals and organizations to pause and make an assessment of where we are and where we are headed. Alice in Wonderland says, "If you don't know where you are going, any road will take you there." But King David had the right idea when he said to God, "Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way." (Psalm 13923-24, HCSB) Taking the time to ask the hard questions, to see where life is taking us, and to make the proper course corrections as we listen to God is all part of living the abundant life our Lord promised us. I encourage each one of us, individually, to take some time alone with God and pray King David's prayer. Let's listen to what God may want to say to us.
As a church, we are excited about an opportunity to do the same thing. Your spiritual growth is very important to our church. Whether you are just starting to explore the Christian faith, or you're a long-time Christ follower, we want to do everything we can to help you grow as a disciple of Jesus Christ. In order to help us in this task we are asking everyone for your feedback on our church and your spiritual journey through a Spiritual Life Survey that you will be able to access through the internet.

Whispers in the Dark
Scripture - Psalm 126:5: "Those who plant in tears will harvest with shouts of joy."
Observation - What a mixed bag of emotions accompany new beginnings. The joy and excitement of moving into dreams and possibilities is tempered with the fear of the unknown and the anxiety of facing the challenges of all that lies ahead. Tears of joy and tears of challenge are often co-mingled.
Certainly the people of Judah, the exiles returning to the land of promise, understood this range of emotion. After years of captivity in foreign lands, God was restoring them to the land of promise. What joy as the possibilities of the new day dawned before them. But there were also realities to that new day. The land, once fertile and productive, was now hardened and fallow. Much hard work lay ahead simply to make it possible to survive. Those early days would be days of blood, sweat, hard work, pain, challenge, and tears. Only the promises of God, the hope for a better future and the assurance of God's presence with them would sustain them. Yet the psalmist promised them that if they would persevere, their tears would turn to shouts of joy!
Application - Seeds are filled with potential, but unleashing that potential for future gain requires faith, hard work, hope and perseverance.

Hi Everyone, Happy New Year! I would
like to feature Horace Sawyer, who heads up our scheduling of the ushers, and his beautiful wife Vivian this month to being the new year.
Getting to know the Sawyers:
Horace and Vivian Sawyer have attended The Family Church for six years and have been members since 2008. They love the mission of the church and are constantly challenged by the messages of Pastor Max and the staff ministers. From the beginning, Horace and Vivian have actively supported various mission projects in several countries and feel a special commitment to support efforts to bring the ministry of Jesus Christ to the lives of others. They have opened their home to visiting missionaries on many occasions. The opportunities to show appreciation to God for what He has done in their lives by service within the church is a special blessing for them. They enjoy travel especially to visit their six children, 15 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
Vivian has served on the council for the Women's Ministry for over 3 years and is presently serving as the Director. She was instrumental in starting the annual Christmas Brunch as an outreach for our family and friends. She enjoys working with the Council in providing opportunities for spiritual growth and fellowship with the ladies of our church..

Again, we are so blessed to have Horace & Vivian with us at the Family Church...great thing is; we have room for you! Please let me know how we can connect you to one of our many teams that make this place special...
Come join us as we grow,
Larry

Discipleship Ministry

Your spiritual growth is of vital importance to our church. Whether you're just starting to explore the Christian faith, or you're a long-time follower of Christ, we want to do everything we can to help you on your spiritual journey. That's why we need your help.
We will be asking you in January to take an online survey that asks questions about your spiritual life and the role our church plays in it. Since the survey touches on a wide range of thought-provoking issues, you should anticipate needing 35 - 40 minutes to complete it. This survey is completely anonymous. An expert third-party research organization will compile your input with responses from others, so your survey will not be viewed individually. It is very important for everyone to participate so that we can get the most accurate picture of where we are as a church.
Thanks in advance for your time and contribution to this tool that will help us understand our church's role in your spiritual life. Please use this link to access the survey-and pass it along to all your friends who call our church their church home.

Men's Ministry
by Mark Ulmer
 Michelangelo's David is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture. Michelangelo was not, however, the first artist involved with the sculpture. Agonstino di Duccio in 1464 begin chiseling a block of marble into David, but stopped work after beginning the shape of the legs, feet and torso. The block of marble set for 10 years until Antonio Rossellino took over where Agnostino left off. Not pleased with Rossellino's progress, his contract to work on David was cancelled soon thereafter. The block of marble set for another 25 years. In 1501 Michelangelo took up his chisel and begin his work. It was not until the master began to hammer away at the stone did the block of marble become the masterpiece it is known as today. Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that, "We are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus, to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do." We start off as a large block of rock. But as men, if we allow God to hammer away at our lives, we can become God's workmanship, his masterpieces, and creations like none other. "Get Hammered" is the theme of Men's Winter Retreat to be held Friday-Saturday, January 25-26, 2013, at Lake Swan in Melrose, Florida. Information and registration forms for the retreat can be found at the registration table in the church lobby. We look forward to you joining us to "Get Hammered". The Men's Ministry bowling will start up again on Monday, January 7, 2013, at 6:00 pm at Splitz Bowling. Please contact me, Mark Ulmer, at mulmer3@gmail.com if you need additional information. |

A New Year, A New Opportunity
Pastor Max has just finished a sermon series on the "Power Hungry Church" that emphasized the truth that the Power of God is linked to "the Witness." We also saw that Spiritual Gifts are given to EVERY Christian and they have a purpose for build up the Body of Christ, the Church. As the New Year unfolds before us, let us remember the importance of knowing our spiritual gifts and using those gifts. If you do not know what your spiritual gift(s) is/are, then getting involved in something is a perfect way of discovering your spiritual gift(s). We have plenty of opportunities for everyone, whatever your spiritual gifts may be, to actively engage in ministry both locally through our domestic ministry partnerships right here in Gainesville, or internationally on Short Term Mission (STM) teams.
Urgent to be Blessed? - It may be that the Lord is just waiting to unveil a new working in your life this year that will begin by your engagement to "Love God and Make Disciples Everywhere," the declared vision of The Family Church. He may be ready to reveal His purpose for you in His global plan that we call "The Great Commission." The patriarch Abraham was given a promise by God that He would bless him [Abraham], however the great context of his receiving the blessing was the he was to BE a blessing to the nations. Often we sense the urgent desire to be blessed by God, yet it is easy to lack that same sense of urgency when it comes to blessing others.... our call, our purpose, as disciples of Jesus Christ. . . .

"STOP!!!!"
It's neither probable nor realistic but so often times I find myself wanting to yell out at the TOP OF MY LUNGS...."STOP!"

Allow me to explain. At the risk of getting on the proverbial "soap box" and railing against the traps of materialism, success, career advancement and high expectations, can I simply tell you that I have noticed a scary trend in teenagers over these past 20+ years that I've been doing youth ministry...they're tired and stressed! We might all say the same and those levels of fatigue or stress ebb and flow with every changing circumstance of this life. I get that because my own life is characterized by these same factors all too often. What concerns me is that many of our kids are following our leads and suffering as a result.
When I first got involved in student ministry so many years ago, the question posed to one of my teens about, "how's it going?" or "how are you doing?" would most often be met with the small talk answer of: "pretty good", "not bad", or "crummy." Probing further, (always recommended...never take the surface level answer as a good enough one. There's always more but you've got to dig it out of them usually), I would discover the reasons why, such as - a good test grade or failed one, a positive family story or tensions with parents, an exciting adventure with friends or a broken relationship problem.

Finger Points to the Creator1
Stephen F. Larner, PhD
The simple act of extending your index finger requires a complex system of finely integrated muscles, tendons, sensors, and processors to make it possible. Have you ever given this amazing feat a second thought? Evolutionists suggest elegant designs like this are just chance events of natural selection. If so, one would expect to find a fossil record of confusing, haphazard, incomplete, and flawed structures, and we do not. However, when we look closely at something supposedly simple as extending a finger, we discover an amazing and clever design that points unmistakably to the Creator.
Seven muscles working in concert control the index finger. (Figure 1).

Orphan Care Ministry
Happy New Year!
We want to send a great big "THANK YOU" to all of you that took part in our two Christmas programs to bless children that are in foster care as well as under the care of the Guardian Ad Litem program. Through your gifts, we were able to provide over 50 gifts to children that need to know that they are not alone nor are they forgotten. Once again, you've shown us that our church members have giving hearts and are always ready to give when a need is presented. I know that the children who received these gifts felt blessed to receive them! Thank you for being ready and willing to give your time and effort to love the fatherless in our community.
With a new year comes new opportunities and the Orphan Care Ministry is excited to see all that God does in and through us to reveal his love to the fatherless in our community and throughout the world. We're praying that the movement we saw at the end of 2012 will continue to grow through the beginning of 2013 as we seek our Father's will for more opportunities for outreach. While we've seen new faces at the church responding to God's prompting and are excited to see how God moves in their lives, we were saddened to learn that the number of children adopted internationally by Americans in 2012 was less than half of what they were just eight years ago. There are many factors in play to explain some of the reasons for the decline, but none of them are too great for our God. Amen!
Please join us in praying for a great work of God to move in 2013 on behalf of the fatherless!

Making One's Calling and Election Sure
2 Peter 1:3-11
His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.
Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness;
and to goodness, knowledge;
and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance;
and to perseverance, godliness'
and to godliness, brotherly kindness;
and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure,
they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.
Therefore, my brothers [and sisters], be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
