Twenty-nine outstanding 2013 graduates of Massachusetts community colleges, state universities and the University of Massachusetts will be honored for academic achievement and their contributions to the Commonwealth during a Statehouse ceremony on May 2 sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education.

 

MWCC Student Trustee Christine L. Eck, a human services major, was selected as this year's recipient of the award. A Barre resident, mother of three and an active volunteer on campus and in her community, Eck is recognized on campus as a champion for the college and for public higher education.

 

Each of the student honorees selected a faculty or staff mentor who provided them with motivational support and intellectual guidance on campus. Eck selected Professor Janice M. Gearan, chair of the psychology and social services department.

MWCC Foundation Names Patrick L. Muldoon 2013 Citizen of the Year

The Mount Wachusett Community College Foundation will honor Patrick L. Muldoon, president and CEO of HealthAlliance Hospitals and Central New England Health Alliance, as the 2013 Harold E. Drake Jr. Citizen of the Year for his leadership and service in the community. He will be recognized during the foundation's annual dinner on May 2 at the Colonial Hotel in Gardner.

Raymond LaFond to be Recognized with 2013 Service Above Self Award

Long-serving community volunteer Raymond LaFond of Gardner will be recognized with Mount Wachusett Community College's 2013 Service Above Self Award. LaFond, senior vice president for commercial lending and business development at Lowell-based Enterprise Bank, will be honored during the college's 48th Commencement on May 16. The Service Above Self Awards recognize those who have made significant contributions to the 29 cities and towns that make up the college's service area.

Joana Dos Santos Appointed to MWCC Board of Trustees

Joana Dos Santos of Fitchburg, executive director of United Neighbors of Fitchburg/Cleghorn Neighborhood Center and a Mount Wachusett Community College alumna, was recently appointed to the college's Board of Trustees by Governor Deval Patrick.

MWCC and Elms College Establish New Transfer Agreements

Mount Wachusett Community College and Elms College and have entered into an academic agreement that allows students to earn an Elms College bachelor's degree on the MWCC campus in Gardner. Two programs will begin in August 2013-a bachelor of arts degree with a major in psychology and a bachelor of science degree with a major in nursing.

Three MWCC Employees Receive Prestigious Rotary Club Recognition

The Rotary Club of Gardner has bestowed the international organization's prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Recognition to three Mount Wachusett Community College employees for their enduring support and dedication to its annual charity auction. Michael F. Ellis, past district governor, District 7910, and current district Rotary Foundation chair, presented the award during a recent meeting of the college's Board of Trustees to Dr. Vincent Ialenti, Professor Joel Anderson and media services Director Arthur Collins.

Tributes to Veterans

Visitors from throughout New England joined the college community to honor fallen veterans of the Vietnam War during a memorial tribute sponsored by the college's student Veterans Group, the Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success, and area supporters.The American Veterans Traveling Tribute brought its Traveling Wall to MWCC April 10 through 14.

Phi Theta Kappa Gears Up for 10th Annual Project Graduation

MWCC's Phi Delta Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society is sponsoring its 10th annual "Project Graduation" food drive to benefit the Gardner Community Action Committee, and Commencement DVD sales to benefit the House of Peace and Education.

Free College Day Draws Learners of All Ages

More than 300 area residents turned out for Mount Wachusett Community College's Free College Day on Saturday, April 13, registering for 800-plus seats in 50 workshops led by MWCC faculty and noncredit instructors who volunteered along with other members of the college community.
