Journaling
In issue 388 "Start Raking" (click here), we offered additional skills to cope with losses and grief. This week we discuss using writing as a coping strategy.

Journaling is another word for writing whatever comes to mind without filtering or judging or concern about grammar. Just get it out of your head and release it. It's free flowing, doesn't have to be full sentences, and can just be single words of feelings and emotions.
Purpose of Journaling
It brings our thoughts and emotions to a conscious level where we can decide what to do with them. It is way to acknowledge your feelings. When you doubt your feelings or make up stories about your feelings, asking yourself this question can be helpful "Do I know this to be true?" You may find that the thought is not true and may even be gone. Then you can ask yourself this question "What do I get out of holding on to specific emotions or feelings such as grief, anger, resentment, guilt, or pain?" Finally ask yourself this question "What are the feelings I'd rather be experiencing?"
Exercise
This week I invite you to do the following:

1. For three days journal your emotions or feelings.
2. What are you learning about yourself?
3. How can you help others by sharing your experience of journaling?

If you'd like to talk about any of the thoughts or feelings that you've journaled, feel free to call or email me 816-213-0125.
