CHOICES FOR MANAGING LOSS OR GRIEF
|
In issue 385 (click here) we discussed different losses, such as a partner, a family member, a friend, a pet, a relationship, a job, a retirement, etc. Today we discuss possible choices for managing loss or grief. Everyone deals with loss or grief in their own way. The coping choices may be difficult in the beginning. Push yourself to get started.
Possible things you can do to help you ride out the waves as you cope with your grief.
1. Take time for you. What do you need the most right now?
2. Prioritize your to do list. Do the things that have to be done rather than overwhelming yourself or trying to please others.
3. Decisions. You may not be emotionally ready to make a major decision. Consider talking it out with someone who is objective.
4. Feed your body. Eat right and drink plenty of water.
5. Sleep. Make sure you are getting enough sleep at night.
6. Get physical and active. Do something physical, such as gardening, walking, biking, hiking, swimming, yoga, chopping wood, etc. Physical activity releases endorphins that can boost your mood and keep you healthy thru a difficult time.
7. Plan ahead. Is there is an approaching holiday, birthday, anniversary or some other event that stirs up sad memories? You can plan an activity that can hopefully make the event less stressful.
Next week we will continue this series with more coping strategies. I'd like to hear what works for you. Feel free to call or email me.

This week I invite you to consider these choices when facing grief or loss.
1. Who are some objective people with whom you can talk?
2. What are two enjoyable things you can do for yourself that can help you feel better?
3. What physical activities interest you? When will you start?
If you find yourself struggling with loss or grief, I can coach and support you through that process. Call or email me 816-213-0125.
