CALL IT THE KANSAS CITY MIRACLE.
On November 3rd 800,000 people of all nationalities packed the Kansas City Royals Parade and Victory Rally. The Royals players have strong community involvement and support. This issue will take excerpts from the November 6, 2015 Kansas City Star article written by Steve Kraske.

"As many as 800,000 people jammed downtown Tuesday, November 3, 2015. And the police report for the day read this way: Three arrests. An unmarked police patrol car damaged.

That's it.

Think about that a minute. Then think about Sunday night. Think about the revelry and the pure, unadulterated joy that gripped this town in the hours after the Royals claimed their first World Series title in 30 years. And then consider the Sunday night police report:

No arrests. No property damage.

Meaning ... no riots. No overturned vehicles. No cars lit on fire. No looting. No robbery. No assaults.

Absolutely amazing."
A DIFFERENT STORY IN SAN FRANCISCO - ONE YEAR AGO.
[While San Francisco is a charming city and hospitable city, the KC Star was right on point in making some comparisons, so I now return to Steve Kraske's article.]

"Sometime soon, go to Google and plug in these words: "San Francisco Giants World Series riots." Then check out the photos of what happened out west when that team won a year ago.

You'll see a man jumping over a burning couch, a club raised skyward. You'll see police in riot gear. You'll see an injured police officer on the ground, trying to rise, after he was struck by a glass bottle. You'll see a beer can flying over the head of another officer holding a rifle in the Mission district.

Reporters called it a "war zone." Two people were shot. Some 40 were arrested. Nine police cars were damaged. Three police officers were injured.

And that was the Giants' third championship in five seasons."
A POLICE CHIEF WHO BUILDS COMMUNITY THRU EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION.
"We aren't prone in this country to give credit to a political leader who prevents bad things from happening.

This week, Mayor Sly James dished out credit to a man who deserves a lot of it - Police Chief Darryl Forté.

"Darryl Forté has a Police Department that he has instructed and gotten to believe that they're part of the community and there's different ways to handle situations," James said.

That means not resorting to knee-jerk arrests. That means talking to people before pulling out the cuffs.

That's a big change. We had a big protest here following Ferguson. But it was peaceful, and Forté and his officers offered protesters rides back to their cars afterward. Rides back to their cars!

That's an attitude that has impact.

The St. Louis area burned. Over here in Kansas City, in the same state, we got through it.

I've said this before: Forté is the right man at the right time. Think about it: 800,000 people jammed into downtown Tuesday. Three arrests.

What a tremendous achievement. What a tremendous statement to the rest of the world, especially considering how different it might all have been."
KANSAS CITY = CLASSY
"How does KC celebrate a World Series victory?" the Police Department posted on its Facebook page. "With class. No riots or cars set on fire here."

"A Kansas City Miracle."
EXERCISE
  1. In your personal life or business, do you sometimes use knee-jerk reactions instead of effective communication? Then what happens?
  2. Do you acknowledge and express gratitude to the leaders in your organization?
  3. Are you building trust while unifying your team?

"We knew from day one that if we're going to win and win consistently we had to bring in players that understood the value of connecting with the community..."
